COMMUNITY PROBLEM 2

Introduction

Technology is essential to the everyday life because of its universal use. As technology

continues to advance, it makes life easier for humans. Technology is very important due to the

fact that people depend too much on it, that is almost impossible to continue without it. There are

many advantages and disadvantages related to technology. Even though there is debate regarding

technology, people can be sure that it definitely improves the world. Technology can be found

everywhere, at school, work, and home. In this paper, technology improving the world,

technology in Uteps college of Business and technology improving education will be discussed.

The reason technology is fundamental in teaching is because it helps in the learning environment

for both teachers and students. Just as Zhihan (2016) states that Increased networking in different

scales from global to local is having a profound effect on learning and teaching (pg. 2441).

Technology changing the world

Technology is creating a great impact to humanity. Dhir (2016) states that technology has

changed the world in many aspects some positive and some negative (pg. 95). In order to keep

growing, change has to happen. If people are not growing, people are not living. According to

Savage et al. (2013) technology and innovation as well as devices and materials, continue to

advance in order to improve the quality of life (pg. 2). Therefore, it is important to accept the

challenge and to adapt to technology advances.

There have been many important situations regarding technology. This innovation is used

to help with traveling, work, communication, and learning. Not only that but technology is very

indispensable now days. Dhir (2016) says that there is no act of human kind today, where

technology does not intrude. (pg. 95). Technology has a lot of positive outcomes, which consist

in making life better. Savage et al, (2013) provide with the example of an improvement due to

social requirements. The improvement discussed is the use of Nano technology to filter water

(pg. 5). This is just one of the outcomes that technology has, it is nothing compared to all of the

things that have been created to improve human life.

Technology has also created some negative changes to the world. At least that is what

many people believe. One of the most important debates about negative impact with technology

are peoples jobs. The issue consists in technology replacing peoples jobs. Dhir (2016) says that

there are many examples of technological advances, which have upset employment (pg. 95). One

example given is that travel agents that have closed shops due to online purchase and service.

Also paying bills, and train tickets have caused a loss in employment.

Technology improving education

As technology is growing it creates new opportunities in the learning environment.

McGovern (2017) argues that adopting new digital approaches to teaching can also enhance the

learning style of students who are immersed in the use of digital devices (pg. 89). This shows

that technological devices are fundamental for educational purposes. Zhihan (2016) states that

The advent of new technologies such as multimedia and the Internet of Things has brought

opportunities for Technology Enhanced Learning (pg. 2441).

Technology such as apps help students to engage more in their education. According to

McGovern (2017) Flipboard and Stitcher are two web based applications that empower students

to engage their interest on class related topics by providing instant access to the most up to date

business content on their smart tablets, phones or laptops (pg. 90). These applications are the

perfect example of how technology engages with student learning. Now days students are so

used to electronical devices that such applications encourage more students into school and

learning.
COMMUNITY PROBLEM 4

Due to the preference of students regarding multimedia, new technology practices should

be implemented in student learning. According to Oblinger (1999) there are major trends that

deal with changes in technology, the increase in processing power, and universal

communications which create impact in business and higher education (p. 1). Education is what

leads the future therefore, teachers need to be prepared in order to encourage students to learn

trough the uses of technology.

Technology used in the College of Business Administration at Utep

In the College of Business Administration technology will always be implemented to

improve college life. Gaytan (2000) argues that in meeting its goal of enhancing the distribution

of instruction to students, the College of Business Administration uses newer teaching and

learning models linked to multimedia technology, all of which hold much promise for assisting

the College to meet its goal more effectively (pg. 7). To develop a better system in the college

there are various types of technology that are included. The multimedia technology may consist

in tools to grow in business and technology that deals with security issues. Kirs (2012) states that

an important duty that the technology implementation manager in the college of business

administration is to reach out to faculty and staff to ensure that they are up to date on new viruses

and security issues. (pg. 1)

One important technology tool used in business is the 3D printer. Nadel (2017) says that

as with any technology with a growing presence on campus, its important for administrators to

consider practices for 3D printing (pg. 30). The 3D printer consists in creating an object by

stacking layers of material. The material that may be used in creating these objects are porcelain,

plastic, metals and wax. The 3D printer is an important pathway for students of the College of

Business Administration. This is because it provides the opportunity for students to become

innovators and entrepreneurs. Also the 3D printing has created some kind of business for the

colleges with printing labs. This does not mean that it is because of the business, but because of

the experience that students acquire from it. Nadel (2017) makes an argument about what the

goal is, which is to provide on-the- job training for students who are highly sought after by

industry (pg. 31). Therefore, 3D printing is an essential tool for the advancement of the College

of Business Administration. The fact that multiple departments are now into the usage of

printers, campuses should strongly consider fabricating a 3D lab. The University of Texas at El

Paso locates a 3D lab called the WM keck center for 3D innovations. This lab is essential for

student innovation. Figure 1 shows and image of the lab itself (Utep 2017).

Technology implementation in the college of Business administration is very important

due to security purposes. Not only it is to worry about technology but to make sure that it is safe

to the use of students and teachers. In the interview conducted by Kirs (2012) he explains the job

of Jack Vaughn, the technology implementation manager (TIM) at the college of Business

Administration at The University of Texas at El Paso. Vaughns job is to keep secured the

information stored in the campuses computers, desktops, and laptops. A cloud backup system is

used in order to back up information. Another duty that the TIM has is to keep students and staff

updated on security issues and viruses. This shows that not only should we implement

technology for learning purposes but to keep in mind that with technology others responsibilities

come a long.

Conclusion

Technology definitely contributes a lot to society. Weather it is personally in work or

school technological advances make the world better. It is also very clear that even tough there

are many positive outcomes regarding technology, there are still many issues that should be

informed and acknowledged. Technology in education should also be improved by teachers and

students to create a better learning environment.
