1. Introduction
This report is about the pavement structure design for EXTENSION OF SOUTHERN
tropical and sub-tropical countries. The pavement design life of this project is 15 years.
The pavement structure adopts a flexible pavement with asphalt concrete surface and
I granular road base that has proposed in the contract document.

2017. The conclusion is given as below:
The road is divided into fill, cut (soil/rock), bridges, and structures sections depending
I on the geometrical design, geological features and other considerations (refer Annex
A).

2.2.2 Geotechnical Investigations
I The design strength of subgrade is measured in terms of CBR. The subgrade strength
of fill areas are taken as CBR of formed subgrade after embankment filling. The
I subgrade strength of cut areas are estimated based on the properties of the soil (Unified
Classification) in the Borehole Data at cut depth. Data obtained from Borehole Log
I details in cut area is summarized in Annex B. For more detail, Report on Borehole
referred ..
1 Approximate relationship between the soil class and CBR are taken frOIDFigure 7.36
I in Pavement Analysis and Design (Second Edition, Young H. Huang), are shown in
Table 2-2.

I 3
Table 2-2 Approximate CBR Values according to Soil Classification
J The subgrade strength classes arc taken from Overseas Road Note 31 (Fourth Edition),
are shown in Table 2-3. For subgrade of cut areas with CBR's less than S, special
I treatment is required.

Special Notes:
I. Designed CBR should be measured at 4-day soaked condition of compaction.
2. Subgrade CDR (4-day soaked) at 95% MDD in modified condition of
compaction in the embankment filling material should not be less than 5%.
3. In the cut area, if formed bottom having CDR less than 5% (4-day soaked) at
95% MDD in modified condition of compaction, should be excavated and
replaced with suitable well compacted material.
4. For CUI hard rock areas, as the sub-base placed between rock bottom and
Aggregate Base Course is forming a weak layer, sub-base material shall be
replaced with Aggregate Base Course material.
