48 Hours in Davao: A 'Biyahe ni Drew' itinerary

If youre looking for a more relaxing take on city life, Davaos the place for you. Heres Drew Arellanos guide to
the smoke-free city.

Welcome to the durian capital of the Philippines!

Located in southeastern Mindanao, Davao is also a center of trade and industry as part of the Brunei-
Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area. However, this urban side is balanced out by an
abundance in homegrown sights like Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, and local flavor just ask
the durian vendors!

What to see
Davao Crocodile Park
Corporate City, Diversion Highway, Ma-a, Davao City
Doubling as an industrial crocodile farm, the park has also been developed to accommodate tourists. In their
wildlife encounter program, guests have the chance to chat with the animal keeper, who explains the animals
role in the ecosystem and how we can conserve the species. There is also a tight-walking performance done
over an enclosure filled with crocs!

Entrance fee is P150 for adults and P75 for children under 12.

Tribu KMindanawan
Davao Crocodile Park Complex, Davao City
Because of its distance from the capital, many arent aware of the rich cultures of Mindanaos indigenous
people: TogGan, Uyaanan, Binotok, Binanwa Baluy, Bakag, Bale, Gono TaugNa, C Tboli House, Gumne,
and BalLay. On weekends, the ten tribes have a cultural show and an exciting fire dancing presentation.

Philippine Eagle Center

Malagos, Baguio District, Davao City
Who wants to see a Philippine Eagle? The Philippine Eagle Foundation is a non-profit organization that has
been working to conserve the fierce bird also known as the monkey-eating eagle and its rainforest habitat
since 1987. Located 45 minutes away from the city proper, the center is open to the public and simulates a
tropical rainforest! Entrance fee is just P50.

What to do

Wakeboarding

weekends. Our tip: Visit the park in the afternoon for an unobstructed view of the sunset as your backdrop!

White water rafting

Davao Crocodile Park Complex, Davao City
Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon may be known as Mindanaos adventure capitals, but dont count Davao out
just yet. The riverside area of the Davao Crocodile Park is the jump-off point for Davaos take on this
adrenaline-pumping experience.

Where and what to eat

Mangosteen Cake from Karlos Gourmet and Coffee
Jacks Ridge, Matina, Davao City
For most of us, mangosteen is the purple fruit whose sweet, white pulp we scoop out with a spoon; but this
Davao cafe has turned it into a pastry. Try a slice for P80.

Ranchero Grill Steak and Seafood Restaurant

Tionko Avenue cor. Arellano Street, Davao City
Sizzling bulalo, blue marlin kinilaw ang baby back ribs. Ranchero is your best bet for a busog-to-the-bones
dinner. On a budget? Not to worry, because Ranchero also has set meals for as low as P100.

Taklobo Restaurant
Jacks Ridge, Matina, Davao City
Taklobo is the main restaurant in Jacks Ridge. The recipes themselves are familiar grilled tuna and kinilaw
are the favorites on their seafood-heavy menu but its a convenient place to get a filling meal. Ask the waiter
if they have fresh pomelo for dessert!
Where to stay
Reliable option: Microtel Inn and Suites
Damosa Gateway Complex, Mamay Road, Lanang, Davao City
Located just ten minutes away from the Davao International Airport, Microtel is your most convenient bet.
Rooms for two start at P3500 a night, with the most expensive suite at P4700 a night; all room rates include a
continental breakfast.

Unique option: Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel

Corner Road 3 & Road 4, Doa Vicenta Village, Bajada, Davao City
Almost every wall here has been decorated by Maximinia Millian, the artist who owns the hotel. Rooms for two
start at P1500 a night, with the suite going for P2800 a night. Traveling in threes? It costs just P280 per night
for every added guest.

Budget option: Deca Wakeboard Park

Tacunan, Mintal, Davao City
If youre traveling solo and on a very tight budget, Deca has single occupancy budget beds that go for P500 a
night, inclusive of free wi-fi internet.

Davao City: Your complete weekend itinerary

One of these weekends, experience Davao's picturesque landscapes, pristine beaches, wildlife sanctuaries
and diverse cultureWhen you think of Davao, youd probably think of Philippine Eagle, the countrys
national bird, which can be found there, but theres a lot more to see in the region.

It is blessed with both natural and man-made attractions like white sand beaches, majestic waterfalls,
interesting parks and more.

TAGBAOBO FALLS. A closer look at Tagbaobo Falls, also known as Mangongawong Falls. Photo by Glen
Santillan

The community-based ecotourism site of Tagbaobo is another interesting place to visit in Samal. It is not
yet as popular as the two tourist spots mentioned above, but has been gaining a lot of attention lately. The
ecotourism site was initiated by the Tagbaobo Tourism Council to help the locals earn a sustainable income
by making them a part of the program.

At Tagbaobo, you can enjoy the beauty of the communitys natural attractions and at the same time
experience the way of life and culture of the Sama tribe. You can visit Tagbaobo Falls, go horseback riding,
view a rice farming demo, go snorkeling, diving, and more.

Homestays are available in the community to give visitors more time to enjoy their holiday. When visiting
the Sama tribe community, do not forget to try their amik, a local delicacy, and their local coffee made
from corn.

How to get there: A visitor has two options to get to Tagbaobo. One is DIY tour and another is by a guided
tour.

If you want the former, you may take a bus from Davao City, alight in Penaplata Bus Terminal, take
another bus to Kaputian and take a habal-habal from the terminal to your chosen destination.
If you prefer the latter, try an arranged tour, like one from Ms. Ella, a DOT-certified tour guide via email at
lucedelsole.inlandtours@gmail.com.

Day 3

Swim in the beaches of Samal Island

SUN, SEA, SAND. Go boating at Samalan! Photo by Glen Santillan

The Island Garden City of Samal is blessed with idyllic white sand beaches and interesting underwater
marine resources. Some of the nicest beaches in the city are Kaputian Beach Resort, Samalan Camp & Sea,
Canibad Resort, Maxima Aquafun Resort and of course the famed and luxurious Pearl Farm Resort.

These resorts offer different types of amenities and water activities that will suit whatever floats your boat.

Sample the best of Davao fruits

Davao is abundantly blessed with tropical fruits which are available all year round. It is where you can find
fruits like durian, mangosteen, marang, lanzones, pomelo and banana at very affordable price.

A good place to do a fruit trip is at Magsaysay Park and Bankerohan Public Market. Fruits in both places are
relatively cheaper than buying in pasalubong (gift) shops and malls.

Peoples Park

PEOPLE'S PARK. A durian-shaped dome inside the park. Photo by Glen Santillan
Located in the heart of Davao, Peoples Park is the most popular park in the city. It is a 4-hectare family-
friendly park with paved walking paths covered in lush vegetation.

It features a durian-shaped dome and is decorated with sculptures of Kublai Milan, a renowned artist in
Mindanao. Many locals love to come here, especially families, and the park is open to the public for free.

How to get there: Peoples Park is located at the corners of Camus and J. Palma Hill Street right across Casa
Leticia and a walking distance from Apo View Hotel. It is a popular place so most locals know where it is
and should point you in the right direction, should you ask.

Visit Davao Crocodile Park

PANGIL. One of the largest crocodiles in the Philippines. 'Pangil' is 'fang' in Filipino. Photo by Glen
Santillan

Davao Crocodile Park is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Davao City. It is located in Diversion
Road, Maa about 20 minutes away from the city proper. The park offers several attractions and collections
of different species of birds, mammals and reptiles. Their main attraction is Pangil one of the countrys

Located along Davaos diversion road, D Japanese Tunnel Family Resorts main attraction is its man-made
hideout, which is said to have been built during World War II.

It was accidentally discovered during a road construction in 1960 and was converted into a resort, complete
with a restaurant and swimming pool.

Entrance fee to the tunnel is P50 (about US $1.12) for adults and P20 (US $.45) for children.

How to get there: Take a taxi from the city proper and tell the driver to drop you at D Japanese Tunnel in
Diversion Road. As of the moment, there are no public utility jeepneys passing that area.

Where to eat?

Lachis Sansrival atbp.

Lachis offers mouthwatering desserts that will satisfy your sweet tooth, particularly what many call the
best sansrival in the city. Try the original sansrival, and also the durian flavor, for a taste of Davao. Another
must-try is their durian and green tea cheesecakes.

Pakfry at Palovince Place

Pakfry is a uniquely Davao dish made from tuna buntot (tail). Pakfry is derived from the words paksiw and
fry. As the name suggests, it goes through two cooking processes cooking in vinegar with spices and deep
frying it to crisp the skin. Palovince Place has the best pakfry in the city. It is one of the few restaurants in
Davao featured in the book Linamnam by Chef Claude Tayag.

The First-Timers Travel Guide to Davao City, Philippines

DAVAO DEL SUR / PHILIPPINES / TRAVEL GUIDES / WHEN WE WANDER LAST UPDATED: 15 SEP 2017 JB
MACATULAD

Mention Rodrigo Duterte to any Filipino and youre guaranteed to get one of two reactions fierce adulation or bitter
disgust. Without question, he is a polarizing figure. Ever since he won the Philippine presidency, there seems to be no
middle ground when it comes to how people feel about him.

But regardless of where you stand with this man, one thing isnt in question the city which he governed as mayor for 22
years is one of the countrys best and most progressive. We had heard many good things about Davao before our trip and
it was nice to find that all of it seemed true. The city was indeed cleaner than Manila and it felt safe to walk around. What
struck me most was how the pawnshops in Davao looked more like retail jewelry shops compared to the mini-fortresses
we have in Manila! Davao has the second lowest crime rate in Southeast Asia, behind only Singapore, and the relatively
lax security was proof of that.

Most important of all, the citizens of Davao seem to respect President Duterte. Our taxi driver for two days went on and
on about him and all the good hes done for Davao. And it wasnt out of fear or blind worship either. It sounded more like
a child mature enough to understand that all the difficult things his disciplinarian father made him do, were for his own
good. We got to experience that first-hand on our trip to Davao and with this guide, we hope you do too.

HOW LONG TO STAY

If youre the type of traveler who doesnt like to rush, then Id say 4 nights in Davao is perfect. It will give you
enough time to tour the city and spend a day or two on neighboring Samal Island. With just 3 nights in Davao,
we skipped Samal on this trip because I didnt think we had enough time. I realize in hindsight though that we
did. It would have made our trip much more hectic and faster paced, but it is possible. Heres a 3-night itinerary
for travelers with ADHD:

Day 1
Arrive as early as possible, then go straight to your resort on Samal Island. Spend the rest of the day relaxing
on the beach or exploring the island.
Day 2
Check out at noon, then stay as long as you like before taking a ferry back to the mainland. Check in at your
hotel in Davao City.
Day 3
Hire a car for the whole day. If you start early enough, around 8 AM, then its possible to visit Malagos Garden
Resort, the Philippine Eagle Center and Eden Nature Park all on the same day. If you want to do the Sky
rides at Eden Nature Park, then its best you visit them in this order:

8-9AM Drive to Malagos Garden Resort

9-10:30AM Malagos Garden Resort
10:30-11:30AM Philippine Eagle Center
11:30AM-12:30PM Drive to Eden Nature Park
12:30PM-4PM Eden Nature Park
4-5PM Drive back to Davao City
5-7PM Have dinner at Jacks Ridge
The reason why I suggest doing it like this is because the SkyCycle, SkyCider, and SkySwing rides arent
available until 1 PM on weekdays (Mon-Thurs). For that reason, its best to go to Malagos Garden Resort and
the Philippine Eagle Center first. If you can make it to Eden Nature Park by around noon, then that would be
perfect since the price of admission comes with lunch. If you go over the weekend (Fri-Sun), then it matters
less in which order you visit these places since the aforementioned rides at Eden Nature Park are open from
8AM-12NN and 1-4PM.

You can stay as long as you want in this area before driving back to the city. I suggest having dinner at Jacks
Ridge that same night to make full use of the rental car.
Day 4
Visit Bankerohan Market and D Bone Collector Museum before flying out of Davao.
WHERE TO STAY: Bahay ni Tuding Inn

I rely on TripAdvisor when it comes to hotels and Bahay ni Tuding had very favorable reviews. Its about a
couple blocks from city hall and is smack dab in the middle of the citys old commercial center, just a quick
jeepney ride away from Bankerohan Market and Gaisano Mall. Its also about a ten minutes walk from D Bone
Collector Museum.
When I booked our room, the last one they had was the large family room which goes for PHP 2,700 per night.
It was nice, but had it been available, we would have been perfectly happy with the compact double for just
PHP 1,500. If youre traveling alone, then their standard single goes for PHP 1,000. All room rates come with
free continental breakfast consisting of coffee, toast, jam, and yogurt.

Its worth noting that another reason why I chose this place is because the owner, Mel, offers a popular Davao

food tour. Unfortunately, she was away on holiday during our stay so we werent able to do it.
If Bahay ni Tuding sounds right for you, then you can book a room either through Booking.com or Agoda.
Clicking on these links will bring up a bunch of hotel listings in Davao, not just Bahay ni Tuding, so be sure to
look around and search for the one that best suits you. Alternatively, you can do a search on AirBnB as well. If
youre new to the site, then you can get USD 22 free travel credit via THIS LINK.
Approximate Room Rate: PHP 1,500 per night for a compact double (as of April 2017)

THINGS TO DO

1. Go SkyCycling at Eden Nature Park

Located about an hours drive from the city center, Eden Nature Park is an 80-hectare mountain resort thats
home to over 100,000 pine trees. Surprisingly, only around 5% of the resort is natural. The rest was replanted
in the early 70s in an effort to restore the foliage cleared by illegal logging. An admirable and impressive effort
indeed. Highlights include the SkyCycle, SkyRider, SkySwing, horseback riding, fishing, and a 4-km trek
through the forest.

Check out my post on Eden Nature Park in Davao for more pictures and information.
Suggested Length of Visit: 3-4 hrs / Admission: PHP 550 (adults) and PHP 350 (kids) with buffet meal, PHP 220 (adults)
and PHP 190 (kids) with plated snack
2. Contribute to the Protection of the Philippine Eagle

Located around an hours drive from the city center and just down the road from Malagos Garden Resort, the
center is home to rescued and captive-bred Philippine Eagles, as well as other birds of prey and a few reptiles
and mammals. Theres a nominal entrance fee which goes towards the conservation of these endangered
animals. Seeing them up close was pretty awesome. Theyre huge!

Follow the link to the Philippine Eagle Center website.

Suggested Length of Visit: 1-1.5 hrs / Admission: PHP 150 (adults), PHP 100 (kids)

3. Enjoy some of the Philippines Best Locally-Produced Cheeses at Malagos Garden Resort

Up the road from the Philippine Eagle Center, Malagos Garden Resort is a 12-hectare nature theme park
featuring botanical gardens, a butterfly sanctuary, an aviary, and a petting zoo. But being the gourmands that
we are, the main attraction for us was the food. They carry Malagos Farmhouse cheese and chocolates which
are arguably the countrys best. They just recently opened a chocolate museum which you may find interesting
as well.

Follow the links to go to the Malagos Garden Resort website or see a list of Malagos Farmhouse products.
Suggested Length of Visit: 2-3 hrs / Admission: PHP 200

4. Become Environmentally Aware at D Bone Collector Museum

Founded by an American living in Davao, D Bone Collector Museum is an unusual but eye-opening collection
of bones from a wide variety of animals. Here youll find complete skeletons of dogs, reptiles, horses, ostriches,
a tiger, dolphins, even a 41-ft sperm whale. With many of the aquatic animals having died from the
consumption of plastics, this museum is a sobering reminder of how our actions can often have a devastating
impact on the environment. A must see, especially if you have kids.

Check out my post on D Bone Collector Museum in Davao for more pictures and information.
Suggested Length of Visit: 1 hr / Admission: PHP 80 (adults), PHP 70 (kids)
5. Enjoy Fresh Durian at Bankerohan Market

With Davao being the center of durian production in the Philippines, you cant leave without trying this
notoriously pungent but delicious fruit. Try it at Bankerohan Market which is the citys main market. Just hop on
any jeepney bound for Bankerohan and it will take you straight there. Be sure to look for the Puyat brand
which is said to be the best.
My first time trying fresh durian, I was surprised by how good it was. Its custardy and creamy with a strong,
toasted, nutty flavor. Its unlike anything Ive ever tasted. Serious YUM.
Suggested Length of Visit: 1 hr

6. Explore Samal Island

We skipped Samal Island on this trip but beachgoers should make it a point to spend at least one night there.
Aside from the beaches, other popular attractions include the Monfort Bat Sanctuary, Hagimit Falls, and the giant
water slide at Maxima Aqua Fun. Samal Island is accessible from Davao City via a twenty-minute ferry ride.
Follow the link for ferry information to Samal Island.

WHERE TO EAT

1. Jet G

This place is interesting. Located at the back of a gas station, Jet G is a Chinese restaurant that was also
recommended to us by a local food blogger. Almost every person dining there that night was Chinese (and
speaking in Chinese too), which was a testament to the authenticity of their food. Even the programs on their
television were in Chinese! Jet G is located at the Jetti Compound along Cabaguio Street. Tel: 0917-692-8518.

Tasty appetizer of tripe and boiled beef.

Expect to Pay: Around PHP 500 per person with drinks
2. Jacks Ridge

Popular among tourists and locals alike, Jacks Ridge offers the best view of Davao. About a 20-minute cab
ride from the city center, its a great place to have dinner and enjoy a few beers. Be sure to go at night to fully
appreciate the view. Jacks Ridge is located atop Shrine Hills in Matina. You can check the Jacks Ridge
website for more information.
Expect to Pay: Around PHP 600 per person with drinks

3. Toryanos Chicken Haus

Quick and inexpensive, Toryanos is a great place for inihaw na manok (grilled chicken). Their specialty is
native chicken which is leaner and gamier than commercial hens.

Expect to Pay: PHP 250 per person with drinks

DAY 1

6:00am Arrive at Davao International Airport.

We were welcomed by Rhoha at the airport and were picked up by the jeepney that we rented for 3 days.
Picture-taking started with the gigantic durian and more

7:00am to 9:30am Check-in at Ponce Suites

Ponce Suites is a must visit place in Davao even if you are staying in another hotel. It has an overwhelming
collection of paintings, sculptures and various art installations. We had late breakfast here and a bit of rest
before we set off for our first destination.
9:45 am to 10:15am Visit Davao Museum
The Davao Museum features handicrafts, instruments and information about the way of life of various tribes
like the Mandaya, Blaan, Tiboli, Manobo, Mansaka and Baghobo. It also showcases a collection of artifacts
from various historical periods and artworks like ceramics, sculptures and wood carving. (Lanang)

10:30am to 11:00pm Visit Tboli and Weaving Center

We visited the showroom of Tboli Weaving Center where we bought some souvenirs. They sell tribal jewelry,
fashion accessories and bags, belts and clothing decorated with beads and embroidery. Then we visited the
handicraft shop/factory where local weavers make their products.
