SINAMICS G150
Drive converter cabinet units
Versions A and C

Overview Benefits
Easy handling of the drive from the project engineering phase
through to the operating phase is provided by
Compact and modular design with optimum ease of servicing
Problem-free planning
Ready to connect, therefore easy to install
Fast, menu-prompted commissioning without complex para-
meterization
Clear and convenient operation using a comfortable graphical
2 operator panel with measured values displayed in plain text or
in a quasi-analog bar display.

Application
Drives such as pumps, fans or compressors do not normally
require a high overload reserve, nor do they require closed-loop
control with high performance or actual speed feedback.
For these applications, SINAMICS G150 offers a low-cost solu-
tion tailored to actual requirements.
The drive converter cabinet units are available in two versions
depending on the selection of required options:
7 Version A
All the available power supply connection components can be
installed, as required, such as main control switch, circuit-
breaker, main contactor, line fuses, radio interference sup-
pression filter or motor components as well as additional mon-
itoring devices.
7 Version C
This is a particularly space-optimized design, without line-side
components. This version can be implemented, for example,
when the required power supply connection components are
installed in an existing central low-voltage distribution unit

SINAMICS G150
Drive converter cabinet units
Versions A and C

Functions (continued)
Open-loop control and closed-loop control functions
The converter control contains a high-quality sensorless vector
control with speed and current controls as well as motor and
converter protection.
Software and protection functions
The software functions available as standard are described be-
low:
2 Software and protection functions Description
Setpoint input The setpoint can be entered internally or externally: internally as a fixed setpoint, motorized potentiome-
ter setpoint or jog setpoint; externally via the PROFIBUS interface or via an analog input of the cus-
tomers terminal block. The internal fixed setpoint and the motorized potentiometer setpoint can be
switched or adjusted by control commands from all interfaces.
Ramp-function generator The ramp-function generator prevents unintentional step changes in setpoints, and thus mechanical
overloading of the drive train. The functions it offers include separately adjustable ramp-up and ramp-
down times.
Vdc max controller1) The Vdc max controller automatically prevents overvoltages in the DC link, e.g. with ramp-down times
which have been set too short.
Automatic restart1) The automatic restart switches on the drive again following a power failure and system recovery.
Flying restart1) The flying restart permits connection of the converter to a rotating motor.
I 2 t acquisition for motor protection The motor temperature is calculated in a motor model stored in the converter software, taking into
account the current speed. Perfect accuracy in determining the motor temperature is, however, not pos-
sible because, for example, the ambient temperature is not considered. For greater accuracy, an input
for a KTY84 temperature sensor or PTC thermistor is provided on the customers terminal block.
Evaluation of motor temperature Motor protection by evaluation of a KTY84 temperature sensor or PTC thermistor. When connecting a
KTY84 sensor, the limits for alarm or shutdown can be set. When connecting a PTC thermistor, the
response to triggering can be defined (alarm or shutdown).
Motor blocking protection A blocked motor is detected and protected from thermal overload by a fault shutdown. Monitoring is per-
formed at operating frequencies over 10% of the rated motor frequency.
Power section protection
Earth fault monitoring on output side An earth fault on the output side is detected by a total current monitor and results in shutdown in
earthed-neutral systems.
Electronic short-circuit protection on A short-circuit between motor and converter (on the converter output terminals, in the motor cable, in the
output side terminal box) is detected and shut down.
Thermal overload protection Triggering of the overheating threshold selectively results in a shutdown or automatic influencing of the
control (pulse frequency, output current) so that a reduction in the thermal load is achieved.
Following elimination of the cause of the fault (e.g. improvement in ventilation), the original operating val-
ues are automatically selected again.

1) Factory setting: not activated (parameterizable)

Typical example: Fans. An EMERGENCY STOP with stop ac-

be tolerated. If stopping is required, however, within a specific
time when an EMERGENCY STOP occurs, it may be necessary
to provide a stop according to category 1. This requires, under
certain conditions, a braking facility even if this is not necessary
for the actual drive application.

In practice, the line configuration on which individual converters

operate is often not known, i.e. the line short circuit power at the
connection point of the converter is not known, so it is recom-

converter. For this reason, drive converter cabinet units up to an
output of 500 kW are equipped as standard with a 2% line reac-

The line reactor can only be omitted (option L22), if the value for

To reduce the voltage stress on the motor and converter, the re-
sponse threshold at which the braking unit is activated and the
DC link voltage generated can be reduced. For example, the DC
link voltage for the converters in the voltage range from 380 V to
480 V can be reduced from 774 V to 673 V. This also reduces the
possible peak power. Factor 1.06 rather than factor 0.8 must be
used here.
