FIFITH TRIP 2

For this trip, we went to Cayman Brac where we visited the District Administration. The

presenter Mr. Burke stated that almost everything that is untaken on the island is politically

driven. Also, the district administration liaises with many different departments including the

public works department where they have a nine million budget (Burke, 2017). They have tried

to reduce it by liaising with the environmental development department and cutting the budget,

but they went over which caused a deficit.

This visit can be related to business and society because the government is a form of a

business and they are providing jobs for in people in their community by putting on road works;

they are also developing the society by fixing the roads. However, the topic Governments

Public Policy Role (Lawrence, 2014, p.164) in the textbook speaks about how the citizens of a

country look to the government to meet basic needs.

Secondly, we went to Cayman Brac Power and Lighting Company where we were given

a breakdown of its history. No light was available on the island only the wealthy families had

generators that provided them with power. So, this was how the company was developed in 1956

and shares were sold to different persons on the island (Tibbetts, 2017). But, electricity officially

came about in 1960 and 2006 they started to offer prepayments which I thought was a terrific

method of payment and Grand Cayman should implement this method.

This session can be related to business and society because the lighting is a business and

they provide electricity to the society. Also, according to Lawrence, (2014, p.9-10), there are

several types of stakeholders in a company which includes employees, customers, and the

community. Hence, in this case, Brac Power would be the business; employees, customers, and

society, would be their stakeholders.
