GRADUATED CYLINDER AND TEST TUBE BRUSH

 In chemistry laboratory, various types chemical apparatus are necessary to perform
experiments. Most of chemical apparatus made of glassware. But, there are also made of
ceramic or metal. All of them have differences in shapes and functions. The understanding of
chemical apparatus such as materials, shapes, and functions of chemical apparatus should be
absolutely controlled before doing experiments at chemistry laboratory. Therefore, in this essay
will discuss about some of chemical apparatus, such as graduated cylinder and test tube brush.

Graduated cylinder is a measurement tool commonly used at chemistry laboratory. It is

used to measure the volume of liquid. In generally graduated cylinder more accurate and
precise than beaker, but it is less accurate than volumetric pipette. Besides that, graduated
cylinder can also be used to measure solid by fill graduated cylinder with water, and then enter
the solid into graduated cylinder. Next, look at the scale of volume and calculate difference
between final volume and initial volume. On the reading scale, which needs to note is the
tangent line scale should be accordance with the liquid meniscus. Meniscus is the curve surface
of the liquid.

The sizes of graduated cylinders have variation according to the volumes, namely 5
mL, 10 mL, 25 mL, 50 mL, 100 mL, 250 mL, 500mL, and 1000 mL, as figures bellow.

Graduated cylinder is made of glass. It has shapes cylindrical tube with a pouring lip at the top
and scales in outer side. It also has a foot in the bottom to hold the body. The foot of graduated
cylinder is usually round or hexagon in shape.
 Besides of graduated cylinder, there are many another tools exist in chemistry
laboratory, one of them is a test tube brush. Test tube brush has the hard fluffy with diameter of
brush 25 mm and the shaft made of twisted wire. The length of test tube brush about 25 cm.
According to its name, test tube brush has a function for
cleaning the inside of the test tube. Beside to clean the test
tube, can also used for cleaning another glasses that have
small mouth and difficult to clean, such as graduated
cylinder, volumetric flask and other.
Based of the explanation above, it can be
concluded that many chemical apparatus in chemistry
laboratory. All of them have difference shapes and functions, such as graduated cylinder and
test tube brush. Graduated cylinder is a measurement tool commonly used in the laboratory that
used to measure the volume of a liquid accurately. Graduated cylinder has shapes like the
cylindrical tube with a pouring lip in the top and scales in outer side. While, the test tube brush
has function for cleaning the test tube or another glasses. Test tube brush has the hard fluffy
with diameter of brush 25 mm and the shaft made of twisted wire.
