Abstract

The current study aims to investigate the factors that influence students academic performance
and suggests appropriate measures to overcome this problem. Survey data were collected from
64 undergraduate students from different universities in the world. Secondary data were used
for this purpose. The findings indicate that amount of time committed to studies is the most
important factor that influences students academic performance.

Introduction

We enter the world of education at the age of 5, beginning with Play Group till PhD or Masters
programme. We always strive to learn more, do more and achieve more. This has become a
way of life for most of us. The current competitive environment of the 21st century is a brutal
place to grow up in. We are always forced to get ahead of others, and no mercy is shown on
those who tend to fall behind. Though sad, but the world we live in right now are achievement-
oriented. There is no tolerance for low performance.

A child and a young adult their abilities are measured based on their academic performances
at school. Many struggle to get an A, while others seem to know exactly the right strategy to
get the same grade. The key to achieving As in all subjects is no longer a secret hidden in the
hands of a few. Research and studies have figured out the facts affecting academic performance.
We base our project on the 5 factors that we believe are the reason behind why some students
get As and some dont. The factors are as follows :-

Communication between students and teachers

The condition of learning facilities

Proper guidance from parents, teachers and counsellors

Stress in the family and at home

A Statistical Study of Factors Affecting Students Academic Performance

Amount of time committed to studies

We will discuss each factors elaborately in this project paper as we move deeper into the subject
of research.

Objectives

To identify and understand the factors that influence the academic performance of
students,
To construct statistical analysis of how student academic performance is related to
those factors and to demonstrate it through pie charts,
To understand how students respond to those factors,
To undergo an Analysis of Variance to establish relationship between the factors and
the overall academic performance of students, and
To spread awareness of these factors to overcome the issues that allow poor grades.

Limitations:

Our research, however, is limited since we have only used ordinal data. Therefore, other than
arranging data in rank, performing pie chart analysis and ANOVA, we were not able to use
other statistical tools. Also, the number of factors that we used is small. Including other relative
factors that affect students academic performance could have permitted scopes for further
analysis and extensive research.

Factors That Influence Students Academic Performance

Communication:
Communication between teachers and students must be clear and effective. Misunderstandings
must be cleared away and queries about issues must be resolved properly and on time. Often
students have a hard time understanding their teachers, which is common, since the gap
between the intellectual capacity of the teacher and the student is wide. Hence teachers have to
explain contents and concepts so that they are understandable for the students. Besides, good
communication between the two will automatically enhance respect, tolerance and patience for
each other.

Learning Facilities:
Learning environment of the student greatly affect his or her performance. Adequate
technological tools, proper lighting, temperature control, hygienic atmosphere, tidy rooms,
professional staff behaviour, quick and easy access to the internet, adequate printing supplies
etc are only a small list of facilities learning institutions must provide to ensure acceleration of
student performance.
Proper Guidance:
The roles that teachers, parents, guardians and counsellors play in a students life is crucial.
Students need certain criteria to follow, so they can rely on those benchmarks to enhance their
performance. Effective study strategies comprise having nutritious food, getting enough
exercises, drinking lots of water, getting plenty of sleep, setting daily study schedule,
organising tasks, and taking help from fellow classmates, teachers and counsellors when in
need. To overcome bullying, verbal or physical abuse, isolation, and other psychological issues,
the students need trained counsellors to guide them through tough times.
Family Stress:
Not all students are lucky enough to have a family structure that is pleasant. Increasing divorce rate,
death rate and other family feuds can put tremendous amount of pressure on a students mental and,
consequently, physical health. In worse case scenarios, students even drop out of school and suffer
from confusion and anxiety about their lives.
Commitment to Studies:
As we will eventually learn, the time committed to studies every day is the most important factor that
plays out in the improvement of students academic performance. Commitment, diligence and hard
work are the essential elements of success. In order to achieve success at school, one must be willing to
commit certain hours of the day to studies only.

Research Methods

The following methods were used to conduct the research on the factors that affect students
academic performance :-
1. Collection of data from questionnaires (using five point likert scale),
2. Pie charts to demonstrate the amount of responses by students, and
3. Analysis of Variance to establish whether a relationship indeed exists between the
factors and the academic performance of students.

Data Analysis

The following chart shows the data on the number of students who participated in completing
the questionnaire :-

Now, we will demonstrate the responses of the participants in pie charts according the factors
that influenced academic performance :-

Communication:
Almost 80% of the participants have agreed that effective communication between teachers
and students create scopes for students to achieve higher in class. Although 8% have disagreed
on that. We can assume that those people who disagree do not believe that lack of
communication skills and introverted nature influence their academic performance.

Learning Facilities:
80% of the participants agreed that proper learning facilities are essential for students to score
good grades, and 12% do not agree so. The reason some participants did not agree because
despite poor learning facilities, adequate study materials and healthy learning environment,
poor students in Bangladesh have achieve GPA 5 in their SSC and HSC examinations.

Proper Guidance:
Only 5% or less of the participants disagreed that proper guidance is not a factor in influencing
students academic performance. However 75% agreed that it influences their study
performance. Here, we make another assumption that those who disagreed did so, because

performance, though 15% of them disagreed about it. Our guess is that the participants who
disagreed to family stress having any effect on their studies are those who are not exposed to
extreme family crisis, such as death of a parent or sibling, divorce of parents etc.

86% of the participants have agreed that the time committed to studies makes all the difference
in the grades achievable. 4% of them thought otherwise. Our best assumption is that the 4% of
the participants who disagreed must have special abilities that require them to spend less time
on study, yet get them good grades.

Hence, 86.87% of the students think that time committed to studies makes all the difference
in the grades achievable. On the other hand, 57.22% of the students think that family stress
does not affect students academic performance as much as the other factors.

Therefore, all the factors are important for excellent academic performance of students.

Conclusion and Suggestions:

Therefore, we have been able to identify all the relevant factors that influence students academic
performance; then conducted a sample survey to understand the responses of undergraduate students
regarding those factors; prepared pie charts to demonstrate the percentage of students who agree and
dont agree to each factors influence on their studies; ranked them according to their level of
importance; and lastly established the fact that a relationship indeed exists between those factors and
academic performance of students. Long story short, the time committed to studies is the most important
factor that influence the performance of students at school, whereas family stress is the least important
factor. Our research has been successful since we have been able to confirm that the factors that we
listed truly affect student performance.

Some students are naturally shy and introverted, thus creating good communication with their teachers
is difficult for them. We would want teachers to collaborate and reach out to these students more
affectionately so that they feel comfortable to talk to their teachers.

We would suggest educational institutions to invest in building modern learning facilities with healthy,
hygienic environment for students. Efficient facilities will enhance student performance, and eventually
institutions reputation. It will also save lots of time for busy students who work and study at the same
time, for example faster, modern printing machine, new computers, improved enrolment system etc.

Guiding students about discipline, etiquette, values and ethics must be part of the curriculum
of every institution. Most students in Bangladesh are victims of poor morals and discipline.

11
A Statistical Study of Factors Affecting Students Academic Performance

Instead of letting it stay that way, friends, classmates, teachers, parents, counsellors we must
all help each other stay on the right path.
Death or divorce in the family is an inevitable circumstance that can not be avoided. If we
know anybody who is suffering from this tragedy, we must do what we can to relieve that
person from his or her pain. Sometimes people are unable to help themselves. In times like
those, teachers, classmates or friends must step in, and talk to that person about it or recommend
them to someone who can.
Lack of motivation, procrastination, laziness, lack of discipline and lack of ambition are the
killers of success. No matter how terrific a persons IQ is, there is no substitute of hard work
and commitment. Some students have to study for half the day, others only for an hour a day.
It is never what God gave us that makes the difference, it is what we did with what we were
given that determines our future.
