Introduction
to
Nursing Research
5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 9
Lesson Objectives
Define research.

Identify types of research & how they relate to

nursing research.
Identify five major areas of nursing research.

Recognize problem solving as part of the

nursing process.
Understand the three phases of the research
process.
5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 10
What is Research?
Research search again or to examine
carefully.
Research is systematic inquiry that
uses disciplined methods to answer
questions or solve problems (Polit &
Beck, 2006)
The ultimate goal of research is to
develop, refine, & expand a base of
knowledge.
5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 11
What is Research?...

Research is a process of investigation.

An examination of a subject from

different points of view. Its not just a
trip to the library to pick up a heap of
materials, or picking the first five hits
from a computer search.
Research is a hunt for the truth.

5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 12

What is Research?...
It is getting to know a subject by reading up
on it, reflecting, playing with the ideas,
choosing the areas that interest you and
following up on them.
Research is the way you educate yourself.

It can be dull if you feel it difficult. Or, it can

be as exciting & fun if you feel the
systematic way of doing it.

5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 13

Systematic inquiry is determine;

What needs to be known.

How this new knowledge obtained.

How it will be measured.

What might interfere with the

measurement.
What meaning will be obtained from
the findings.

Research & Nursing Process
Research can play an important role at each
phase of the nursing process.
Problem solving approach is similar to the
nursing process.
Problem Solving Process
Gather information in a situation
Analyze information and identify problem
Plan a course of action
Evaluate the plan and its outcomes
5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 18
Problem Solving Approaches
There are mainly two approaches
to solve the problems

Human inquiry

Scientific inquiry

5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 19

Human inquiry
Natural human activity; people seek a
general understanding about the
world around them.
Ignore or redefine problem
Trial & error & experience

Tradition

Authority

5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 20

Scientific inquiry
Using research to problem solve is
known as scientific inquiry

It is a process that is observable,

verifiable data are systematically
collected using our senses to explore,
describe, explain, or predict events.

5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 21

Characteristic of Scientific inquiry
Order series of steps
Control setting restrictions
Empiricism evidence from human senses
Generalization broader understanding
Operationalisam definitions
Replication repeat the study
Objectivity what is observed rather than
personal beliefs
5/20/2013 Research in Nursing 22
Purposes of Scientific Research
Description
describe characteristics

Exploration
focus on discovery of relationship

Explanation
provide explanations.

Prediction and Control

Research Process
Conceptual phase - Think it out

Empirical phase - Go & Do it

Interpretive phase - See what it all means

Summary
Research is part of real life.
Research questions may stem from your
practice areas.
The goal of nursing research is to
demonstrate that nursing care promotes
health in individuals, families and
communities.
Research can be fun & exciting as well as
important.
