Lesson 1

Objectives:

1. Student will show dynamic expression through steady beat and describe dynamics
with correct terms
2. Student will potch rhythm and notate it on board
3. Student will sing Sweetly Sings the Donkey from memory

Instruction:

1. Teacher will play John Murpheys Adagio in D Minor. (circle in center of room; 3
min.)
a. Student will tap steady beat bigger when loud and smaller when softer
b. Teacher will explain forte and piano, and write terms on the board
2. Class will potch Peas Porage together, words written on board.
a. Peas porage hot, peas porage cold, peas porage in the pot nine days old.
Some like it hot, some like it cold, some like it in the pot nine days old.
b. Students will potch forte and piano according to what teacher calls out.
c. Teacher will ask if anyone knows what peas porage is and give some
background
d. Volunteer will notate on the board
3. Teacher will lead phrases of Sweetly Sings the Donkey with solfeggio and hand
signs
a. Sweetly sings the donkey at the break of day. If you do not feed him, this is
what hell say: eeh ah eeh ah
b. Students will repeat
c. Teacher will ask for volunteer with different animal
d. Student will sing solo

Evaluation/Differentiation-

Teacher will:

watch students tapping off beat and correct them by modeling


listen for students using correct dynamics
using scaffolding to guide students to correct rhythm notation
will have class sing slowly or match one pitch for students struggling with pitch

Objectives:

1. Student will find down beat and demonstrate through movement


2. Student will learn that Beethoven wrote Fur Elise
3. Student will use motion and dance to express Fur Elise
4. Student will sing solfege for Loch Lomond and show phrasing
5. Students will be able to identify various instruments by sound

Instruction:

1. Teacher will demonstrate motions for down beat and following beats (tap, clap)
a. Students will follow teacher for Murpheys Adagio
2. Teacher will play Fur Elise (for Elise)
a. Students will listen with eyes closed
3. Teacher will show picture of Beethoven and write his name on the board
a. Teacher will tell students about Beethoven
b. Ask them to remember for next week
4. Teacher will play Fur Elise again
a. Students will dance and move to express how it makes them feel
5. Teacher will use Kodaly method to teach rhythms, phrasing and solfege for Loch
Lomond (1st verse, words written on board)
a. Teacher will use scaffolding to help students understand meaning
b. Students will sing Loch Lomond expressively and follow teachers gestures
6. Students will watch video showing different instruments

Evaluation/differentiation-

Teacher will:
Watch for students to accent down beat with movement
Point out aspects of the music students might emulate through movement
Repeat movements or phrases where students struggle

Objectives:

1. Student will sing Loch Lomond with phrasing and expression


2. Student will speak rhythm with 16th notes
3. Student will personally interpret Danse Macabre through drawing
4. Student will associate instruments and sounds with legend

Instruction:

1. Teacher will lead students in singing Loch Lomond (words on board)

a. By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,


Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
b. Students will react to different gestures
2. Teacher will demonstrate Halloween rhythms
a. Students will read words that represent note values
b. Teacher will take away words and picture so students are left viewing notes
c. Students will switch rhythm orders and speak together
d. Volunteers will perform for class
3. Teacher will play Danse Macabre
a. Students will draw in any way the music inspires them
b. Students can share their drawings with the class
c. Teacher will tell story of Danse Macabre
d. Music will play again and teacher will point out aspects just discussed
e. Students will identify instruments

Teacher will listen for note and rhythm accuracy and give students direction for
better performance
Demonstrate accurate rhythm when student makes mistake
Lesson 4

Materials/Prep: lyrics, A/B sheets, stories, load music

Objectives:

1. Student will learn Little Bunny Foo Foo and respond appropriately
2. Student will identify form of Fur Elise
3. Student will read story and interpret it with Orff instruments in groups

Instructions:

1. Teacher will sing Little Bunny Foo Foo and students will follow along
a. Little bunny Foo Foo
Went hopping through the forest
Scooping up the field mice
And bopping them on the head
Down came the Good Fairy, and she said
"Little bunny Foo Foo
I don't want to see you
Scooping up the field mice
And bopping them on the head."
I'll give you 3 chances,
And if you don't behave, I will turn you into a goon!"
And the next day... (repeat and reduce chances)
b. Teacher will leave ends of phrases (bolded) out for students to fill in
2. Teacher will explain form of above (repeat and variation)
3. Teacher will hand out sheets labeled A and B and guide students in identifying for of
Fur Elise
a. Students will hold up A or B to identify form and move with music
b. Teacher will review information about Beethoven
4. Students will choose a story and Orff instruments and get into groups
a. Students will read story and interpret it with instruments
b. Students will look up or ask about words they dont know
c. Students will perform stories for the class

Evaluation/differentiation
Teacher will:
Check that students are correctly identifying form
Guide students with expression by asking questions (can you imitate the sound of
the horse in your story?)

Materials/Prep: Load video, paper and pencils, Tchaikovsky info

1. Student will dance expressively to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy


2. Student will learn about Tchaikovsky
3. Student will write own story with form
4. Express story with Orff Instruments

Instructions:

1. Teacher will play Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from the Nutcracker
a. Students will dance expressively
b. Teacher will talk about Tchaikovsky and write his name on board
2. Students will write their own stories with form and identify form
a. Students will get into groups of 3 and practice expressing with Orff
instruments
b. Students will perform for the class

Evaluation/differentiation
Teacher will:
Dance with the students, modeling musical elements in movement
Watch that their movement reflects musical elements
Help students develop story ideas and sounds to go with them
