VISCOMETER OF FH GUAR GUM POWDER

1- OBJECT AND APPLICATION DOMAIN

Determination of the VISCOSITY BY FANN VISCOMETER OF FH GUAR GUM

POWDER in an aqueous solution.

2- DEFINITION

After putting guar into aqueous solution, the measurements of viscosities are performed
with a FANN viscometer with the defined in the method.

The result is obtained after reading on dial of the viscometer.

3- PRINCIPLE

A solution at 1% (p/p) of standard Guar is prepared in deionized / D.M. / Distilled water

at 25C temperature.
Mix according to the method given.
Make a reading of the viscosity after different time intervals.
Maintain temp. at 25C throughout the testing.

5- EQUIPMENT AND MATERIAL

Laboratory standard material and in particular those which follow:

a. Precision balance: Reading 0.001g

b. FANN Viscometer
c. Stirrer with rpm regulator.
d. 600 ml Beaker
e. Temperature sensing unit fitted with PT 100 type sensor.
f. Measuring Cylinder up to 500 ml.

6- SAFETY

6.1 EQUIPMENT
During the agitation, the beaker must be held.

6.2 REAGENTS
No particular measurements

6.3 SAMPLE TO BE TESTED

Maintain enclosed conditions to avoid atmospheric humidity effect, as Guar sample can
be hygroscopic.

7- OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

7.1- STANDARD FH GUAR FANN Viscosity in Cold

a) Weigh 2.4 g of Guar, 4.0g KCL and Weigh 496 g of DI water in a 600 ml beaker at
temp. 25C. Introduce the KCL in water while stirring and let it mix completely. Now mix
Guar powder into the water under agitation on the top of the vortex formed by a rotation
of the propeller at 1500 rpm. The duration of the introduction must not exceed 15 s.
Once the guar is poured, start the chronometer and let it stir for 2 minutes & 30
seconds.

b) Pour the solution into FANN Viscometer container up to mark shown in the container.
Place it under viscometer spindle and measure the viscosity at 300rpm set for the
spindle speed in the Viscometer. This activity should be completed quickly to ensure
first notation of reading at 3 minutes of solution preparation.

Carry out readings at different time intervals as shown in the chart or as required.
