Standard (with Demonstrate knowledge of eighteenth-, nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century foundational
number) works of American literature, including how two or more texts from the same period treat
similar themes or topics.

Introduction: As students enter the classroom they will be instructed to log into their computers
(5 min) or phones and complete the daily question posted on our English 12 Google
Classroom [NEPF Standard 4a]. The question will ask them:

How long has it been since youve read poetry: 1 year or less, 3 years or less, 5
years or more?

During this time take attendance while students are completing their question.

Daily Reviews: Once all students finish their daily question, the T and students will engage in a
(5 min) discussion about poetry. I will ask them what they know about poetry i.e what is
theme when it comes to poetry, what are common topics that show up in poetry.

Daily Objective: Present the daily objective: Students will practice interpreting common poetry
(1 min) themes that appear in nineteenth century poetry.

Concept and Skill Students will complete a webquest[NEPF Standard 1c] that will show them five
Development and different nineteenth century poets (Robert Frost, Walt Whitman, Henry David
Application: Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Emily Dickinson) and their work. They will
(10-15 min) need to read each poem and try to interpret what the author is trying to convey i.e
theme. .

Guided Practice T will have the students compare the ideas they gathered from their webquest. T
(Teacher led): will ask students about what literary devices were common throughout all of the
(10-15 min) poems they read. They will then begin to understand the writing styles nineteenth
century poets used to convey their themes.

Group Practice (Whole Students will get into groups of 4 and use the literary devices they gathered to
class or small groups): create their own poem (1 stanza, 1 line per student). The poem should convey a
(20 min) simple theme and use 2 literary devices they found. Students will then submit that
poem to Peergrade.io[NEPF Standard 3a} and receive feedback on their poem
from their classmates. They will give feedback to other poems on the board.
Respond to each of the other groups poems(2-3 sentences).

Independent Practice Students will individually work on developing their own poem. They should try to
(Alone): convey a more indepth theme and use 5 literary devices that were found during
(20 min) the webquest. They will refer back to the works of the Nineteenth century poets to
get an idea of how to write their poem.

Homework Finish the poem they started in class. Be sure to convey a more indepth theme
