The TRUE Nature of Time

The TRUE Nature of Time

This paper attempts to explain my thoughts on what Time actually is and whether or not Time
is something that should be considered as an inherent part of Nature.

…Current Time…
At the moment we see Time as something which is perceived to be an inherent part of Nature,
something that controls and directs many of the functions of our world and indeed Nature and
the universe as a whole. Time is something that we almost consider to be an all pervading
‘force’ as it were that along with the other forces we know of influence our reality.

As people we use Time a great deal to provide structure to our lives, to in fact provide us with
a high amount of precision so as to allow us to be able to achieve certain objectives
throughout our day. An obvious example would be allowing us to get up at exactly the right
Time in the morning for work. It is no longer acceptable or useful enough in our society that
we may look out and see the sun coming up and know that it is morning and therefore Time to
get up. We need more precision than that and so this is currently the job of Time.

The problem here is that because Time has become such an important part of our lives we
have projected that importance onto our understanding of Nature and the world around us. We
now believe that Time IS a part of Nature and this as you will see is where things go wrong.

…What is Time really?...

To put it simply Time is a measurement of the observed motion. Therefore Time is a
measurement system that we use to measure the perceived motion occurring around us.
Let’s take the example of our planet orbiting the Sun. We know that it takes approximately
365 days for the Earth to do a full rotation around our sun. We know this because of our use of
Time. However Nature is not using Time to create or influence the observed motion, WE are
merely adding the idea of Time to give us our answer.

It is important to separate Time from Nature because Time is simply a measurement system
that WE have created. Another way to look at Time is kind of like a spoken language such as
English or Spanish. We use language to help us communicate but the English language itself
does not exist within Nature. Nature does not know English, it is something WE have created
that exists outside of Nature to help us. That in a nutshell is Time.

Time is nowhere but simply in our minds. It does not exist in Nature. Were Time to exist in
Nature then the universe would be very different.

…Is Time important?...

This depends on what you consider to be important. Do you consider being able to wake up in
the morning at exactly the precise moment important? Or knowing the precise moment when
your bus/train/plane is going to arrive? Indeed today many machines and devices could not
function properly without the invention of Time. And so in our society Time is generally
considered very important and is incredibly useful to us. But that should not mean that we
delude ourselves into thinking that Time is a part of Nature and therefore the universe. It is
very important that we separate Time from being something that is real because if we don’t
what we end up doing is including Time in our thoughts and discussions about how we think
the universe works.

…Is Time travel possible?...

The answer is no. If Time itself does not exist then nor does Time travel. The motion that has
occurred in the universe can never be repeated absolutely. Nor is all the motion that has
occurred stored somewhere in a kind of universal memory bank ready to be played back like
some giant DVD. We remember our past because Nature has given us memory. And not just
us but in my opinion everything has a memory of some sort, including rocks, trees, plants,
metals, water, soil, atoms, planets etc. But that memory is localised to the object or body and
not global to the entire universe.
It is perfectly within our means to recreate a past memory, a good example might be a film
where we create the illusion of a past life or Time frame such as the old American West or the
swinging 60's. And with a better understanding of how Nature really works we may one day be
able to create a physical illusion that is almost indistinguishable from the real past. But I'm
afraid there will be no going back to a real past point in Time and visiting your younger self or
your great great grandma or granddad. Because the past no longer exists. Your memory is of
what once was and not what still is, whether that be a second ago or 10 years ago.

As I have said at the beginning of this paper Time is simply the measurement of motion.
Everything in the Universe is moving. Not just galaxies, stars and planets but you are moving
right now as you sit there and read this. Your body is made up of atoms and just like the Earth
moving and rotating about the Sun, these atoms are moving and rotating about each other.
Everything moves! And so if we think about Time merely being an expression of motion then
we can say with some confidence that it may in fact be possible to travel ‘through’ Time to the
future so to speak.

How is this possible?

Imagine that you could slow down all the atoms in your body so that they moved incredibly
slowly. Your body would end up in a state that to all in intents and purposes would resemble
that of an animal in a state of hibernation. This would mean that your body would virtually
shut down and therefore age very slowly. Now imagine you are in this hibernation mode for 50
years, and within that Time your body has only aged by 2 years. When you wake up from your
hibernation state you will of course find that everybody and everything around you has indeed
aged by 50 years. The world around you will have changed accordingly but you will only have
aged by 2 years and so you will look the same as when you entered the hibernation state. Of
course to you the entire journey of 50 years would simply have been instantaneous from the
moment you closed your eyes and entered the hibernation state to the point when you open
your eyes 50 years later. To you it would seem as though you were simply asleep and then
woke up in the future!

It is important to understand that although the above is possible we are not actually travelling
‘through’ Time because as I have said Time does not exist. All that has happened is that we
have slowed down the natural aging process in your body. And so you will not have travelled
‘through’ to anywhere nor have you magically ‘jumped’ ahead in Time. Time is not a factor in
what has occurred.

…How is it then that some people are able to 'see' into the future?...
A persons future is partly predefined by there own actions and decisions. If you think of the
choices you make in life as the points on a compass (North, East, South, West), once you have
made that choice you begin to move down a certain path, which is decided by the choice
(direction). That path will then lead to other choices and decisions some of which can be seen
before you encounter them kind of like looking further down a footpath in a forest and seeing a
big tree blocking the way before you even get to it. This ability has nothing to do with Time, in
fact if anything this ability is strongest in those that have very little perception of Time. We
know that tomorrow the earth will rotate and move around our Sun and we know that the
other planets and moons within our solar system will as well. We know this because the motion
(choice) occurring defines a certain path around our Sun which we can predict not just
tomorrow but the day after and the day after that and so on.

…So what is space-time?...

Einstein believed that in space Time existed as a kind of invisible layer (now called space-time)
that can be changed or manipulated by a spinning body such as a planet or a star. This then
affects other objects close to the spinning body. Unfortunately Einstein is incorrect for there is
no invisible layer of Time. What there are are forces which are created by the spinning body
which act upon other objects within it’s vicinity. These forces affect the motion of those objects
close by and not just the object but the spinning atoms that make up the object as well.

…If I were to believe their is no such thing as Time what would it mean?...
That is really for you to discover. You will begin to view certain things differently, certain
subjects and ideas will now appear stupid or ridiculous because of there close connection with
Time. On the other hand you may now find other subjects and ideas quite plausible. However
it is only when you have completely annihilated Time from your perception of the world around
you that you will understand fully.
