GPS
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is becoming the primary means of navigation worldwide. The system is
based on satellites in a continuous grid surrounding the Earth at an altitude of approximately 20,200 km, each
equipped with an atomic clock set to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) at Greenwich, England, called Zulu time
or military time, which means it is written in four digits, e.g., 16.30 rather than civilian 4.30 pm. The GPS units in
the aircraft, or even in a pilots hand, find the nearest three satellite signals in a process called acquisition. Once
it has identified the satellites locations from their acquisition codes, it measures the time delay between
transmission and reception of each satellites radio signal and calculates the distance to each satellite, since the
signal travels at a known speed. The pilot then knows his latitude and longitude, accurate to within one metre.
The accuracy of GPS is affected by atmosphere conditions, including humidity and reflections of signals from
buildings and geographical features. The navigation message from a satellite is also transmitted only every 12.5
minutes, so the data is slightly out of date, which may cause up to 2 m of inaccuracy. In coming years, GPS will be
made even more precise and include ground transmitters at the ends of runways to aid landing.
