SPECTRUM, a Lifespan Autism
Resources & Training course
Autism touches many people and families. With this
comes an increasing need for awareness and understand-
ing of practical resources and approaches for supporting
situations in many contexts schools, homes, community.
In January, Selkirk College is launching SPECTRUM:
Lifespan Autism Resources & Training, an exciting, inno-
vative online course, developed collaboratively with stake-
holders from across the Columbia Basin. Almost four
years in the making, it offers perspectives about Autism
Spectrum Disorder (ASD) across the lifespan, using a
story based multimedia approach and Moodle, a simple
learning platform.
There is a strong community need for basic informa-
tion about autism and the impacts it has at all ages, says
Selkirk College Education Assistant & Community Sup-
port Worker (EACSW) Program instructor Jane Green.
From the teacher, to the librarian, family member, psy-
chologist and education assistant, bus driver, life guard,
soccer coach, aunt, store clerk, many lives are touched
by ASD.
SPECTRUM will increase awareness and understand-
ing of practical resources and approaches for support in
several contexts.
Five community focus group sessions were held in
Castlegar, Trail, Grand Forks, Nelson and New Denver to
gather information and insights on what should be taught,
to what depth and in what order. Interest was significant
and early on, the need for SPECTRUM was reinforced.

Design and development of this online offering was
important. Course content is bright and engaging on
screen using light board technology, strong graphic ele-
ments and video content. Accessibility for different learn-
ing styles was a priority.

SPECTRUM will appeal to education assistants, teach-
ers, early childhood educators and community support
workers who want to increase their qualifications and
broaden their resume. The training and resources are also
valuable for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, care-

ASD and anyone living in community.

regional community partners and generously funded

By the age of 80 over 65% of humans have colonic diver-
ticula. The cause is uncertain. Some attribute it to lack of
dietary fiber and some newer observations support it as a
cause of chronic inflammation of the bowel wall.
However, the theory that inflammation is chronic in the
formation of diverticulitis raises the question of whether
probiotics will stimulate the immune process and be an
effective treatment. In a recent study it was found that the
average remission for antibiotic regime was 2.43 months
as compared to 14.1 months for an antibiotic with probi-

Holidays can be ruff on pets
It can also be the most hectic, with gift-toting visitors
coming in and out of our homes. Not to mention the dec-
orations and the food; lots of food.
The most common Christmas-related illnesses or
emergencies we see are related to dietary indiscretion,
says Dr. Kendra Goulet, head of Emergency Services at
MississaugaOakville Veterinary Emergency Hospital.
Around the holidays pets have more opportunity to get
into and eat, things they should not.
Chocolate, for example, is toxic to pets. Chocolate con-
tains theobromine, which can be fatal if taken in high
doses. While theobromine poisoning is most common
in dogs, the toxic dose in cats is even smaller (though
cats are less likely to eat chocolate since theyre not able
to taste sweetness). Dr. Goulet advises turkey, ham and
other holiday dinner foods should also be kept away from
pets, as they can cause a painful abdomen with associated

vomiting and diarrhea.
Pet owners should try to avoid feeding their pets, or
avoid allowing others to feed their pets, food items from
the dinner table, Dr. Goulet suggests. Ensure that any
food items set out during entertaining, including the gar-
bage, are out of reach of pets. Remember that dogs and
cats have a keen sense of smell and can find the chocolate
or other food items wrapped up under the tree.
The addition of a Christmas tree to your home can pose
festive threats to your pet. When ingested, ornaments,
ribbon, tinsel and new toys can cause obstruction of their
stomach and intestinal tract. Place gifts, decorations and
ornaments out of your pets reach if possible. And if your
cat or dog becomes inexplicably fixated on a certain orna-
ment or decoration, you may consider simply removing it.
Even with the most diligent pet parents, accidents can
happen. Your dog may get her paws on that package of
chocolate your neighbour brought over, or your cat might
eat through your childs homemade pipe cleaner orna-
ment. Thats why its important to keep your veterinarians
number close by.
Speak with your veterinary healthcare team about
which emergency clinic is closest to you for those times
when an emergency occurs out of regular business hours,
such as over the Christmas holiday.

NAKA Slide show presentation
Ann Alma and Helen Samson from the Nelson and Area
Kaoma Alliance (NAKA) gave an eye opening slide show
at a meeting for the Canadian Federation of University
Women, Nelson and District on Saturday, November 18.
NAKA is a volunteer run organization that works to
help secure education for orphans and vulnerable young
people in Zambia with funds provided by selling fair trade
baskets made by 50 families in the Kaoma region of Zam-
bia. Ann showed slides of families creating the baskets as
well as the living conditions in the villages.

 Export Navigator: Expanding mar-
kets for Kootenay manufacturers
Snowskates, hats, wood products, honey candles,
sourdough pasta, electronics, raw vegan chocolate the
common thread West Kootenay manufacturers with
an interest in export. Of the seventeen attendees at the
Export Navigator workshop last Thursday, several have
been exporting for years and are looking to broaden their
scope, while others are just beginning the process of try-
ing to navigate the many legalities, fees and considerations
involved in the export process.
Facilitated by Michael Hoher, the Export Advisor for
the Kootenay Boundary region, the workshop laid out
things to consider when looking to export including cul-
tural differences, export codes as well as export services
for those who were first getting into export or expanding
into new markets.
The export environment is cluttered with agencies,
crown corporations, government entities, to name a few.
Said Hoher. That makes the process much more complex,
regardless of whether youre skilled in export already and
want to discover new markets or you want to export for the
first time, because its hard to know where to start. Thats
where I come in as the Export Navigator Advisor, I work
with you one-on-one to tackle all of these concerns.
This course is a good eye opener. It makes the venture
into exporting less scary. Said Richard Wolf of Pacific
Insight. By looking at the practical issues, we gain aware-
ness of the hidden costs of exporting such as import
duties, product liability and freight responsibilities.
Liz Cohoe, designer and owner of Lillie & Cohoe, began
exporting her unique hats in 1996. However, as part of
a thriving business, she recognizes the importance of
expanding her market. Working with Michael and the
Export Navigator program has been helpful for tidying
up our existing export procedures, Cohoe said. Its also
interesting to discover new places to export to.
Andrew da Silva of Raw Magic Chocolate who has
been exporting within Canada, is interested in getting his
unique product to the densely populated west coast of the
United States an area that is receptive to his health-con-
scious, raw food product. Im looking into what we have
to do with the FDA how do we register with them, what
kind of labeling changes do we have to make, how much
is this going to cost. Said Da Silva. I need some really
specific questions answered and Im looking forward to
some one-on-one time with Michael to try and figure a lot
of these things out.
During the workshop, Hoher acknowledged the diffi-
culty of the export process. And with the current changes
in several free trade agreements with Europe and within
North America, there can be many aspects of the process
that will need frequent review. But the goal of this work-
shop is to encourage these intrepid business owners to
persevere. Anybody that has gone down the export chute
grows in sophistication in leaps and bounds, says Hoher.
Through the export process, they become a better busi-
ness person, developing sound decision making and mak-
ing invaluable connections.

In Memoriam
McLEAN, DONALD CHARLES: Sept. 12, 1934-Dec. 9,
2017. Donald McLean passed away on Saturday, Dec. 9,
2017 at the age of 83 years. Donald was a generous and
humorous man with a passion for dogs, cars, his BMW
motorbike and later, his Barth motor-homes. Although cen-
tered in Calgary, he also loved his home in Kaslo, BC where
he took daily trips to the lake with his dogs and to have cof-
fee with his friends. He was a geologist who enjoyed hiking
and camping in the Rocky Mountains as well as traveling
throughout North America and Europe. Donald is survived
by son and daughter-in-law Cameron and Bev and their son
Matthew; son and son-in-law Malcolm and Doug; brother
and sister-in-law Al and Wilma; and close friends Peter and
Fiona Chomitz in Kaslo. Donald was predeceased by his
wife Rose Marie. No services will be held. Photos, memo-
ries and condolences may be shared with Donalds fam-

Joseph Bendis ~ 1927 2017 He was predeceased by his parents

It is with great sadness we announce
the passing of Joseph (Joe) Bendis
on December 5, 2017. His peaceful
passing was at home on Shutty Bench,
his residence since his birth in 1927.
He worked many jobs in the mining
and forestry industries and for the
Village of Kaslo. He enjoyed all the
wildlife around his farm, in particular
his two crow friends.
He will be missed by his sister Margaret
(Finlay) Levick of Trail and many
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Theresia and Steve, his brother Steve,
sisters and brothers-in-laws Sophie
(Mundo) Allegretto of Burnaby, Mary
(Tom) Hetherington of Nelson, and
Annie (Gordon) Madill of Victoria.
A memorial service will be announced
at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made
to the charity of ones choice.

Grief during the holidays
The message holidays are time spent with loved ones
has been imprinted on many of us, from a young age. Hol-
idays mark the passage of time in our lives.
For many people, the holiday season is one of the hard-
est times in grief. We miss our loved ones even more than
usual. How can you celebrate togetherness when there is
none? When someone special has died, your world loses
its celebratory qualities. Holidays only magnify the feel-
ings of grief. The sadness feels sadder and the loneliness

want to avoid, it is the pain. Grief is the way out of the

Pay Attention To The Children. They are often the for-

vidual and unique as we are. These holidays are part of
the journey to be felt fully and it is healing and honoring
to acknowledge that they may feel more sad than celebra-
tory while you are grieving. Giving gentle understanding
and healing presence to the wide spectrum of emotions is
one of the most meaningful gifts you can give yourself, or
another, experiencing grief this holiday season.

NAKA works to keep 12 young people in school ranging
from grade school to post-secondary, as well as supporting
them after graduation. Ann spoke about four students in
particular and how their organization has been able to help
them overcome huge life challenges and go on to succeed at
school. Three of these students have since gone on to secure
employment with companies in their fields in Zambia.
It was both a sobering and uplifting presentation.
