Break-out Title/Topic: Understanding WW1 Resources Time Bridge-in: - Has anyone here covered WW1 in their history class in either grade school or high school? This weeks classes are focused on WW1 and its effect on literature, art, and society. To better understand it, and why so much of it is bleak, we will try and mimic what it was like in the trenches of Europe. 2 min Pre-Assessment: - Does anyone know why WW1 was fought the way it was and why the outlook became so bleak as soldiers continued to fight? Can anyone guess how this affected society at the time? 2 min Learning Objective: - Students will be able to understand why poets, writers, etc. viewed WW1 the way they did and use this information as a pretext to their readingsto better understand why this war changed the world. 1 min Participatory Activity: - Mentees will stand on one side of the battlefield and I will stand on the other. On my mark the mentees will rush my position and try to take it over. If you are hit by a bullet (paper ball) go back to the beginning and try again This will simulate a raid through no mans land and how people felt rushing a trench. - Paper balls - open 4 space min Post-Assessment: - This activity is meant to show students the effects of WW1 on the troops, which later turned these experiences into art, music, etc. 2 min Summary: - Restate the main points about WW1 and trench warfare changing the outlook of society and how that outlook is reflected in art and literature. 2 And answer any question related to the activity. min
