Look at all the marbles
Now lets look at the graph
How does the graph show how many marbles of each color there
are?
Introduction - 5 colors of marbles
(10 min) - If you count them all, there are 18
- Count the cubes in each row show 3 L blue, 2 D blue, 4 yellow, 3
green and 6 white
How can you use the graph to compare the number of each colour
of marble?
- Same amount of L blue and green
- Most white
- Twice as many yellow as D blue

We are going to learn to collect and organize data, make and
compare graphs and describe the data shown in graphs.
Read about Danielle: 10 minutes
- Collected data: favourite colour hats
- How might have Danielle made her list and chart?
- Danielle used a type of graph called a pictograph; she used
symbols to represent each persons choice.
What are the parts of a graph?
- Title
- Category labels
- Symbol for each category (pictograph)
- Legend
Body (35-40
Collect data about classmates favourite colour and create
min)
pictograph.
- Work in groups of 3 to find out everyones favourite colour.
- Tally all of the answers in a chart.
- Create pictograph displaying the data.
*hand out worksheets and allow 10 minutes for data collection*
Individually use the data that you collected to create a pictograph
showing the data. (15 minutes)
- There are 23 Students in the class (if all are here) make sure you
have 23 tallies on your chart (include your own favourite color).

Tell me 2 things your graphs show me.

True or false?
- You can get information quickly from a graph
Closure (10 - You can get the information you want by asking yes or no questions
min) - Any information that can be shown in a pictograph can be shown in
other graphs too.
In this chapter we will learn the math skills to use data collection,
and graphs to answer questions.
