P- Alkalinity
Range: ppm as CaCO3
Method: Titration
Testing Time: 15 min

1. Rinse the graduated cylinder with the Deionized water then with sample to be tested
2. Measure 50 mL sample and pour it into a casserole.
3. Add 4 ~ 5 drops of P- indicator.
Note: If sample does not turn pink. P-alkalinity is zero. If it turns pink, follow the next steps.
4. Fill the burette up to the zero mark with N/50 Sulfuric Acid.
5. Add N/50 to the casserole drop by drop while stirring the sample.
Note: As soon as one drop of N/50 Sulfuric Acid turns the sample colorless, close the valve.
6. Check the burette scale and record the number of ml used to change the color. Do not refill
the burette Use the same sample to test for M-alkalinity.
Calculation (for 50ml sample)
P - Alkalinity = 20 x ml of N/50 Sulfuric Acid used

M Alkalinity
Range: ppm as CaCO3
Method: Titration
Testing Time: 15 min

1. Add 4 ~ 5 drops of M- indicator to the same sample used in P-alkalinity test.

2. Without refilling the burette, add N/50 to the Sulfuric Acid casserole drop by drop.
Note: As soon as one drop of N/50 Sulfuric Acid turns the sample pink, instantly close the valve.
3. Check the burette scale and record the number of ml used to change the color. It includes
the amount of N/50 Sulfuric Acid used to measure the P-alkalinity.
Calculation (for 50ml sample)
M - Alkalinity = 20 x ml of N/50 Sulfuric Acid used

OH Alkalinity OH = 2P -- M
Regents Required: P-Indicator Solution, M-Indicator Solution, N/50 Sulfuric Acid Solution
