COLOUR YOUR LIFE

Mara was having trouble sleeping in her new flat. She had tried everything hot milk, pills, relaxation
tapes but nothing seemed to work. A friend took a look at Maras bedroom and said, no wonder its the
colour of your walls! The walls were painted a deep purple and yellow. Taking her friends advice, Mara had
her room repainted a calming sky blue and started visualising the same colour as she lay down to sleep at
night. It worked Maras insomnia was cured!

Using colour to improve health is probably one of the oldest forms of medicine. In ancient Egypt, certain
colours were worn to relieve specific physical conditions, while in early Indian civilisations, colour was used to
transform mood. For example, people might be sent into the forest surrounded by green to calm their
nerves.

Today, as then, colour therapy is still being used to treat a variety of illnesses. Recently, however, its
popularity has grown as more and more people turn away from conventional medicine in favour of alternative
methods of healing. One form of colour therapy is colour-puncture. This is similar to acupuncture, except
that beam of coloured light is used instead of a needle. Colour can also be used to improve mood. At one
London hospital, 17 people who were suffering from depression got treated with a special light mask that had
tiny red lights inside. Twelve of the patients were cured.

How does colour therapy work? Although there are various kinds of treatment, they are all based on the
same principle: Different colours produce different energies because colours are formed by frequencies of
light, and each one causes the air to vibrate at a different speed. Red, for example, is the fastest, so it is
associated with energy. Blue has a lower frequency and therefore is thought to be more soothing. Colour
therapists use colour to create the perfect balance of energy within the mind and body. This might be
achieved by wearing white, thinking pink or drinking orange. The possibilities are apparently endless.

PRINCE WILLIAM

Prince William, the son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, tries to live an ordinary life. He
always tells people to call him William. While he was growing up, he hated paparazzi and avoided appearing in
public with his famous mother. His family has worked hard to protect his privacy. When he was in school at
Eton, school officials asked students to leave the school if they talked to newspaper reporters about the
Prince.

At school, William loved sport, specially football, rugby, swimming and water polo. He studied very seriously
and got good marks. Furthermore, he was a popular student. William lived in the same dormitory as his
younger brother, Harry. The two brothers are good friends. William is an independent person and does not
always follow the rigid protocol of Buckingham Palace. He has personally invited guests to royal social
gatherings and has openly objected to some decisions made by his father. This is in contrast to his father,
Prince Charles, at the same age. A committee decided that Prince Charles would go to university and then
enter the military, and thats what he did. He had no alternative.

In the autumn of 2001, William entered St Andrews University in Scotland. That year, applications to St
Andrews rose by 40%.

MEMORIES

London, April 1974 ... Grey, cloudy. It had been a long winter. Small, pale, a sixteen-year-old schoolboy who
had never travelled alone, never been abroad, I boarded an airplane

And half a morning later I walked down the steps of the plane into the bright, white light of Spain of
Andalusia Seville! A warm wind blowing on my face through the palm trees. Palms! And orange trees!
The streets of Seville lined, lined with orange trees! I bent down, picked an orange from the pavement,
remembered the marmalade Id had for breakfast breakfast a thousand miles away.

April in Seville! Warm and free: as if summer had begun. Guadalquivir, La Giralda, voluptuous gardens,
Parque de Mara Luisa, fiesta and feria, my first kiss ... Id never drunk wine before ... never seen a car jump
the lights, weave around people on a zebra crossing, roar off, hooting with laughter Id never seen cars
double parked never seen people sitting in the street, drinking coffee coffee that tasted of coffee
finos and manzanilla everybody drinking, nobody drunk; everybody talking at the same time. Everybody
talking and nobody angry. Friends for ever! Santa Marta, Barrio de Santa Cruz, Triana, Macarena ... Long
days, warm nights and time time for everything. Lunch at three, dinner at ten, bars that never closed
And when I found a pond was worth 160 pesetas, well I stayed another week!

London, April 2002. Its grey and cloudy and now Im middle-aged and married, middle class and mortgaged,
with a good job, children, and very little time, but sometimes sometimes, at breakfast, I pick up the
marmalade, and I remember I remember

THEME CAFES

This web our restaurant review looks at a new and extremely popular kind of dining experience the
theme caf. We sent our two reviewers, Julia and Tony, out to see whats on offer here in London.
Hard Rock Caf
This is the oldest theme caf and the first Hard Rock Caf opened in 1971. Music rock and roll music is
the theme here and the restaurant is packed with hundreds of items from the history of rock n roll. For
example, a guitar that belonged to Eric Clapton, John Lennons written lyrics for Help and there are even
some of Madonnas costumes.
Planet Hollywood
It is newer than the Hard Rock Caf and is owned by a few Hollywoods biggest and most famous film stars:
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. The theme here is the world of
TV and film and you can watch previews of new films while you are eating. The walls are covered with
autographed photos of the worlds most famous film and TV stars. The restaurant also contains a fascinating
collection of film memorabilia, including Van Kilmers batsuit from Batman Forever.

Rainforest Caf
This is completely different from the other theme cafs. Imagine having dinner in the middle of a tropical
rainforest surrounded by live parrots and tropical fish. In the background you can hear thunder and wildlife
noises. You can see animated elephants, gorillas and monkeys and theres even a talking tree.
Tony
The Hard Rock Caf and Planet Hollywood have very similar food burgers, pizza and pasta but different
prices. The Hard Rock caf is a lot cheaper than Planet Hollywood and definitely better value. Its a great
place to go for a night out with friends when you dont want to spend too much money.
Julia
I think Planet Hollywood is the trendiest, but its also the most expensive. The Rainforest caf is the most
interesting and fun place to eat. I was impressed by the special effects and the food was delicious.
