In the first modules of this course, we discussed why it is
so difficult to come to a generally accepted definition of Discusses
the term terrorism. We also looked into several attempts
to formulate a definition, such as the Academic Consensus Definition of
terrorism formulated by Alex Schmid. In this assignment, we ask you to
choose one out of four events and explain why you think this event should or
should not be labelled terrorism.

In this assignment, you have to choose one of the following four events:

1. The Oslo Bomb Attack and Shooting on Utya in July 2011

2. The Sarin Gas Attack on the Tokyo Subway in 1995

After you have chosen one of these events, write an essay that answers the

following questions:

1. What was the verdict of the judge: Were the terms terrorist and
terrorism used with regard to the perpetrator and the incident?

2. Do you think this incident should be labelled terrorism, when looking at


the Academic Consensus Definition of terrorism by Alex Schmid? Write
down which elements of the Academic Consensus Definition you think are
most relevant and which ones do not correspond to your chosen event at
all.

Take into account the following points: menos

Your essay needs to be written in English. English is the official language of


this course and it is the only language that is being understood by all
participants. Please note that you will not be graded on your proficiency. If
you see an essay that is written in any other language, you should give the
minimum amount of points to all evaluation criteria.

Your essay should be between 600 and 800 words.

You have to add a list of sources in an additional text box that you have
referred to in your essay by using footnotes. Use at least two sources.

If you do not use footnotes in your essay, you will fail this assignment. If
you quote a source, you must use quotation marks ("). Quotations without
quotation marks will count as plagiarism

assignment.

You will be asked to give scores to a number of aspects of this essay as well
as provide more detailed feedback in a text-box. Please do this carefully as
your peer can learn a lot from your feedback, and you probably hope to
receive detailed feedback as well!
