FA 17: MUED 376: Choral Music, Methods and Materials

Dr. van der Vat-Chromy

A-24. Concert Programming Assignment

This assignment is the opportunity to design a major seasonal

concert program that will include three/four different ensembles of
different vocal settings.

Each program must include 12 pieces, varying in voicing, style, and

difficulty. For example, plan to program 3 pieces for your SATB choir,
3 for your Mens Ensemble, 2 for your Childrens Choir, 3 for your
Womens Choir and a combined Finale.

For example, you may choose from:

K-12 choirs: Fall/Winter/Spring/Graduation Concert

Church choirs: Advent/Easter Program, etc.
Grades 6 -12: Cabaret/MUTH/Opera Performance (An Evening at the Opera)

Please give your concert a name or a theme, which will serve as the
organizing principal for your concert.

For each selection, please enter the necessary information into the
template found on the next page, re-titling Piece 1, Piece 2, etc. as
you proceed.

After completing your assignment, please save your document as a

.pdf, and send it to everyone in the class. In this way, we will have 17
concert programs in our files!

MUED 376: Choral Music, Methods and Materials
Concert Programming Assignment

Conductor Name: Jenny Hoye

Date: 11/1/18

Concert Theme/Title: A Night at the Movies

To be performed by: (List your choirs by name)

Concert Choir
Mens Choir
Womens Choir
Childrens Choir

Concert Rationale:
(Why you chose the theme and groups in this assignment.)

I wanted to choose a theme that could be used at any time during the year that wouldnt be
tied to a holiday. I liked a lot of the material on J.W. Peppers Stage & Screen category and
that songs from films would be an interesting and fun theme. I chose a standard SATB
concert choir, a mens choir, and a womens choir to highlight different repertoire for those
types of groups and get experience in thinking about how to program for those kinds of
choirs through this assignment. I thought adding in a childrens choir, either from an
affiliated middle/elementary school or the community would be a nice touch, as well.

Annotated discussion, program notes, and/or important information for consideration:

What better way to being a night at the movies than with one of the most iconic movie
themes ever written, the James Bond Theme? This arrangement by Jay Althouse allows
our Mens Choir to create sounds normally made by instruments with their voices,
resulting in an effect reminiscent of vocal jazz. This effect, combined with the minor
tonality of the piece and the swingin style and rhythm of the vocal lines and piano
accompaniment, creates a unique musical experience for both the choir and the audience.

No night at the movies would be complete without some classic Disney music, delivered tonight in the
form of Trashin the Camp from the 1999 hit, Tarzan. The soundtrack features music and lyrics
written by Phil Collins, including two versions of Trashin the Camp one from the movie and one
performed by the band NSYNC. The carefree and fun vocal jazz piece performed entirely on scat syllables
allows the Mens Choir to continue to explore choral singing in new and exciting ways.

The Rainbow Connection was originally written for The Muppet Movie, which
premiered in 1979. This is another song on our concert that was nominated for an
Academy Award for Best Original Song, and also enjoyed success on Billboard music
charts, receiving a lot of radio play. This piece, originally performed by Kermit the Frog
for The Muppet Movie, has been reused many times since 1979 for various Muppet
specials and movies, as well as popular covers from artists ranging from Willie Nelson to
Sarah McLachlan to Gwen Stefani. This two-part rendition is a lot of fun for our

percussion for the a cappella song. Anna Kendrick performed her version in the 2012

Reflection is one of the most popular songs from Disneys 1998 film, Mulan. It was
sung by Lea Salonga in the film, who also voiced Princess Jasmine in 1992s Aladdin.
A single version was also recorded by a then 17-year-old Christina Aguilera for the

explores themes of wanting to be brave and share your true self with the world, which
has been a wonderful discussion topic in our Womens Choir.

Skyfall is our second James Bond song of the evening! Written and performed by hit
singer Adele, this was the title track for the twenty-third James Bond installment, which
premiered in 2012. The song won Adele a Grammy, a Golden Globe, and an Academy
Award and perfectly captures the dark and moody essence of the film. Our Womens

beautiful piece.

Phil Collins on the soundtrack. We welcome guest instrumentalists from our Concert
