Imagine moving into a house that is completely full but you need at least 50% more space
for the rest of your stuff to fit; that is our Earths biggest problem right now. Activist Paul
Gildings speaks about how the Earth is overflowing, how economic growth will end in the
future, and how we, as a society, need change and problem solving to occur before it is too late.
In his speech, The Earth is Full, Gilding effectively uses ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade
the audience to take action and help save the Earth before we all die.
Sadly, the Earth is eating itself alive and we are not slowing down the process, but,
actually, society is speeding it up. Economic growth is very important to our society, because it
is the center of our trade resources and other economic importances. However, our economic
growth is just beginning, and we are already damaging our Earth and exceeding the Earths
We plan to take this highly-stressed economy and make it twice as big and then make it
four times as big--not in some distant future, but in less than 40 years, in the lifetime of
most of you. China plans to be there in just 20 years. The only problem with this plan is
Gilding is right with this quote, because our Earth is taking on change that is impossible and
damaging. The reason for this speech is to persuade the audience to make that change so we can
live with abundance of resources instead of creating more materials that will overflow our Earth.

Paul Gilding uses ethos to show credibility during his speech by stating where he
retrieved the facts about the Earths future problems. He states in his speech, The Earth is full.
Its full of us, its full of our stuff, full of our waste, full of our demand. Gildings claim is
credible, because he also mentions after, This is not just a philosophical statement, this is just
science based in physics, chemistry and biology...we are living beyond our means (Gilding).
This statement draws in the audience's attention to take action and understand that the Earth is
too full and society needs to take action as soon as possible. Another example of ethos in
Scientist like James Hansen tells us we may need to eliminate net CO2 emissions from
the economy in just a few decades...eliminating net CO2 emissions from the economy in
just 20 years is actually pretty cheap, not very cheap, but certainly less than the cost of a
According to Sciencedirect, CO2 is caused by the burning of fossil fuels and it continues to
increase its amount into the atmosphere every year and causing the Earth to warm up (Anderson,
Hawkins, and Jones). Overall, Paul Gilding uses ethos clearly and states how it is credible by
explaining where he found his information through science and scientist and he uses words like
Next, Gilding portrays logos in his speech to appeal to logic and reasoning. Gilding states
in the beginning of the speech, But of course, you cant borrow natural resources, so were
burning through our capital, or stealing from the future. This statement is true and presents
logos, because it is supporting the argument and convincing the audience to understand that the
Earth is running out of natural resources and instead of conserving the resources the Earth has to
offer, people are using the resources that are meant for the future. In addition, when the resources
Chandler 3
are running out, the Earth sends out signals that we need to slow things down or change the
course. For example, climate change, water, soil and food are all changing. Another quote from
Gildings speech that exemplifies logos is, we need to act like the future depends on it. We need
to act like we only have one planet...the Earth can support that (new technology) if we choose the
right path (Gilding). Altogether, Gilding is trying to persuade society to be aware of the trouble
the Earth is having with its resources and how our Earth is so incredible that it can support our
new technology and science if we change societys way of using too much resources in order to
In order to persuade an audience, one needs to be passionate and show emotion towards
ones side of an argument. Paul Gilding is passionate about helping the Earth and taking action.
In his speech he is talking about stopping economic growth and how it will stop our trading
system. In addition, he explains the effects of climate change around the world:
Imagine China, India and Pakistan going to war as climate impacts generate conflict over
food and water. Imagine the Middle East without oil income...imagine our highly-tuned,
just-in-time food industry and our highly-stressed agriculture system failing and
Gilding is passionate while getting his point across by being repetitive with the word imagine
and stating the cause and effect of global warming and economic growth around the world.
Another issue with global warming is sea levels rising. According to Independent, the area of
arctic sea ice is melting away. In March 1978 there was 16.5 sq km of sea ice. However, in
March 2015 there is only 14.5 sq km of ice (Goodfellow & Griffin). If we do not take action

soon, the Earth will be underwater. Lastly, Gilding finishes his speech with an emotional
sentence.
We can choose life over fear. We can do what we need to do, but it will take every
entrepreneur, every artist, every scientist, every communicator, every mother, every
father, every child, every one of us. This could be our finest hour. (Gilding)
Gilding is focusing on grabbing the audiences attention to help save the Earth. To persuade the
people he uses the quote ...this could be our finest hour. That sentence should make the
audience aware and cause them to have an emotional appeal to this topic. All in all, Gilding uses
pathos effectively to persuade his viewers to take action and lean towards his side of the
argument.
In conclusion, Paul Gildings speech uses ethos, logos and pathos effectively to persuade
the audience and viewers to understand what is going on with our Earth and to take action to
save us all. If we do not stop economic growth or global warming we will be underwater from
the rising of sea levels, polluted from new factories and cars, and desperate for resources if we

The essay is very well organized and thoroughly responds to the prompt. Each point is clearly
stated and supported with sufficient evidence. You also do a good job explaining how each piece
of evidence demonstrates your point. There were some unneeded words and other small errors,
but nothing major. This is a very interesting speech and topic. Nice work analyzing the
argument, Cam!
