Michigan State University

Michigan State University is a public college located in East Lansing, Michigan. It was

founded in 1855 and was originally intended to be an agricultural college. The university is co-ed

and has no religious affiliation. It went through multiple name changes throughout the years,

starting with Agricultural College of the State of Michigan and finally being named Michigan

State University in 1964.

Tuition for the college is $12,271 per semester for in-state individuals. This includes

$7,258 for tuition & fees and $5,013 for room and board. If you are not a Michigan resident,

tuition will cost $24,743.50. The college spans a whopping 5,192 acres. It boasts many facilities,

including the 75,000-person-capacity Spartan Stadium, multiple fitness rooms, basketball courts,

indoor & outdoor pools, and much more.

The average GPA for Michigan State students is 3.70. The typical SAT scores are around

1,120 - 1,290. ACT scores range between 23 and 28. The college has rolling admission, meaning

they accept applications as long as they still have space. However, it is strongly recommended to

apply early because slots fill up quickly. November 1st is the deadline for priority scholarship

applicants, and May 1st is the decision deadline for all applicants.

Michigan State offers over 200 majors. Some of its most renowned programs include

education, agriculture, and engineering. For high achieving students, an honors college program

is available. This program provides a more flexible schedule and opportunities for special groups

& activities. Students are also able to study abroad in over 60 countries, including areas in all six

conventional continents.

There are plenty of activities to do around the campus as well. Abrams Planetarium and

the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum are both great places to spend some time and learn a thing

or two. The Lansing Mall and Horrocks Farmers Market are both popular shopping destinations.

If youre looking for a good meal, the MSU Dairy Store is the one of the best restaurants in the

area. You can even go on a jog or take a bike ride on the Lansing River Trail.

If covering the expenses for the college is a concern, Michigan State has many programs

that provide financial aid. There is a wide range of scholarships available, with academic,

financial, and sports scholarships all available. Scholarships are automatically given out based on

your admission information, so there is no extra step required to apply for one. However, most

scholarship opportunities require you to be enrolled full-time and be a Michigan resident.

Michigan State has an adept career services group that focuses on helping students find

employment opportunities. Part-time and full-time jobs can be found, as well as internships.

They also check over resumes and give mock interviews. A large 95% of Michigan State

graduates are either working or are in graduate school.

Michigan State has over 900 student organizations, meaning that there is a place for

everyone. These groups vary from social clubs, volunteering, academic groups, religious groups,

and more. Michigan State also has over 60 Greek letter organizations, of which 11% of all

students are a part of. Intramural and varsity sports are both available as well. There are a wide

range of intramural sports, including soccer, table tennis, kickball, dodgeball, flag football, and

many others. Some of the most popular varsity sports at the school are basketball, football, and

hockey. All students can feel like a part of something, with clubs available for all types of

people.

There are a variety of dorms available that cater to different needs. Alcohol-free, smoke-

free, quiet hall dorms, and flexible housing are all available as housing options. All freshmen are

required to live on campus. Roomates are selected online, but can be changed upon request.

Alcohol is permitted in a few select dorms, but illicit drugs are strictly prohibited. Apartments

are also available, but are given out with a lottery system due to the high demand. There are

many ATMs spread throughout the campus, so cash can be retrieved quickly and is not a

concern.

Michigan State has nine dining halls in total, offering full meals or just quick snacks.

These dining halls are spread throughout the campus, most of them in close proximity to dorms.

The meal plans range in cost from $2,928 to $3,778, depending on the package you purchase and

the benefits you want. More expensive plans allow you to invite guests to dine with you, provide

funds on a student debit card, and more. Some of the more common meals served are burgers,

sandwiches, pasta, pizza, and soups. All dining halls have the standard, breakfast, lunch, and

dinner menus, alongside a late night menu. Cookies, energy drinks, and other sugary foods are

spread throughout this menu, helping college students through late-night essays.

Overall, Michigan State University is the complete package when it comes to colleges.

While it may not be the most prestigious, it offers some great programs and has a limitless

amount of extracurricular activities. There are tons of things to do around the area, and their

career services program is a great way for graduates to start off their careers the right way. Any

high school student undecided about what college to attend should definitely research further and

see if Michigan State is the right college for them.
