Wilmington College was brought to existence as a county institution under the control of
New Hanover County Board in 1946. In 1947, Wilmington College was established under the
direction of the North Carolina College Conference and the administration of the Directorate of
Extension of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Then in 1952, it was accredited as
junior college by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The New Hanover County
voted in 1958 to place the college under the Community College Act of the State of North
Carolina. Requirements for admission and graduation and the general academic standards of the
college came under the supervision of the North Carolina Board of Higher Education, and the
college began to receive an appropriation from the state for operating expenses in addition to the
local tax. In 1963, Wilmington College became a senior college with four-year curriculum,
authorized to offer bachelor degrees. Wilmington College became the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington in 1968. Then in 1977, it was authorized to offer its first graduate
programs at the master level. The Board of Governors elevated UNC Wilmington to a
Wilmington NC. The total cost for in-state attendance is about $23,113. While the out-of-state
cost of attendance is about $37,082. The tuition is about $4,356 in-state and $18,325 out of state.

The per semester cost is $2,178 in-state and $9,163 out of state. In terms of the size of UNCW,
there are about 13,914 undergraduate students and 1,826 graduate students.
The application for UNC Wilmington requires a high school diploma, a college
preparatory program, minimum of 15 units, SAT scores averaging 1180, ACT scores at 25-28 on
average, and about 3.8 GPA --2.5 GPA is UNCs minimum. The deadline for all applications is
February 1. There is no early admission either. Once accepted, the room and board cost is about
$10,060. Books and supplies cost about $1,104 on average. Other expenses include about
$4,998 in general.
The most popular academics at UNC Wilmington include business marketing, health
professions and related sciences, and biological or life sciences. There is a study abroad program
along with many other special programs. Some of the special programs include accelerated
program, double major, honors program, independent study, teacher certification, and
internships.
The surrounding area has many activities and local shops. Some of these include popular
grocery stores, shopping, golf courses, many popular restaurants, a large variety of donut shops,
and a Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park. Of course, the beach is close by and an attraction for
many.
UNC Wilmington has many types of financial aid, some of which include grants,
scholarships, federal work-study, and loans. The scholarships are awarded for high GPA, high
SAT or ACT, and for exceptional talent in sporting. For the honors scholarship, one will be

graduates come away with a job. The opportunities for career services include a job fair, career

days, academic majors fair, network night, preparing for graduate school, and resume writing
events.
UNC Wilmington has many social events and activities. Some of activites include a
beach blast, a carnival, a polar plunge, bingo nights, art walks, Veterans Day run, concerts, and a
bike summit. There are also many clubs and activities in which a student can be involved. Some
of these include choral group, concert band, dance, drama theatre, jazz band, literary magazine,
music ensembles, radio station, student government, student newspaper, student film society, and
television station.
UNC Wilmington is located in the small city on a 661-acre campus. On-campus housing
is required for freshmen. Roommate preference is submitted with room request. After two
weeks of the semester, there is an open roommate change in which anyone can change
roommates freely. After that period in order to change roommates a student must go to residence
coordinator for complaints. The types of rooming available include coed dorms, women's
dorms, single student apartments, and fraternity or sorority housing. There are many things that
are allowed in the dorms, but also many things that are not. Some things that are not allowed in
electrical appliances such as deep fryers, electric skillets, toaster ovens, oil popcorn poppers,
George Foreman grills, gas or charcoal grills, lava lamps, paintball, water, Nerf or other
recreational/toy guns, space heaters, ceiling fans, pets -- with the exception of fish, candles,
halogen lamps, road/traffic signs or safety cones, extension cords, any type of firearm or bullets,
wireless routers, third party bed lofts, incandescent bulbs (LED or CFL bulbs preferred),
hoverboards, and illegal substances. Illegal substances, including drugs, are banned and the
penalties are severe. Alcohol is allowed but only if the student is over the age of 21 and has a

permit for alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is only promoted for the positive use or nonuse in a
responsible manner.
UNC WIlmington offers a variety of sports, some recreational and some competitive.
These sports include badminton, basketball, cross country, football, golf, racquetball, sand
volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and water polo.
There is a recreation center that has many sporting opportunities. Another opportunity for
students include the movie theater that is located on campus. The student center houses many
resources for students, including the ATMs that have access to five different banks.
The dining experience for UNC Wilmington are very diversified. There is a main dining
hall called the Wagoner; there is a cafe called Dubs Cafe; there are many convenience stores
spread throughout campus, several Teal Meal locations, and the Hub which houses several
dining options. The Wagoner is located in the center of campus near the residence halls, while
all the other dining options are spread throughout campus or located in the student center. The
food offered ranges from all American to grilled to pizza to ethnic. The main dining halls are
all-you- can-eat, just swipe your card once. The meal plans are all combined differently but the
options are unlimited dining hall meals, seven meals a week, five meals a week, food dollars, and
guest meals. The all-access meal plan cost about $1,800. The meals per semester with food
dollars ranges from $460 to $1,355. The plan with just food dollars ranges in the area of $400-
$600. The main dining halls are open from 7AM to 9PM. While the Hub is open until 2AM.
Overall UNC Wilmington provides great schooling and a life experience that can benefit
people of every interest. UNC Wilmington has a very student focused campus and learning
environment. This will be sure to allow anyone to benefit from being a seahawk.
