Daily Quiz: 15 mins. only
Given the AADT of a Truck Code AADT (one- Gross Vehicle
road for one direction direction) Weight
at 4.5% traffic growth 1-1 40 16,880
rate, determine the 11-2 55 33,760
following: 12-1 7 42,200

1. design traffic using the CESAL method.

2. the equivalence for each axle and truck
type.
3. compute the CESAL for all vehicle types.
Solution: Design Traffic for each truck type
(1+0.045)20 1
A) 2 axle trucks = 40 365 = 458,023
0.045
(1+0.045)20 1
B) 3 axle trucks = 55 365 = 629,781
0.045
(1+0.045)20 1
C) 5 axle trucks = 7 365 = 80,154
0.045
Solution: Equivalence Factor (EF) & CESAL
3.38 4 13.5 4
2 = + = 7.38 458,023 = 3.38 x 10^6
8.2 8.2
3.78 4 14.99 4 14.99 4
3 = + + = 22.38 629,781 = 14.09 x 10^6
8.2 8.2 8.2
7.12 4 10.71 4 11.79 4 12.58 4
4 = + + +
8.2 8.2 8.2 8.2
= 13.29 80,154 = 1.065 x 10^6
SUM = 18.535 x 10^6

Approaches to Pavement Management

(1) Assess present pavement condition,

(2) Predict future condition,
(3) Conduct an alternatives analysis, and
(4) Select an appropriate rehabilitation
strategy.
Pavement Management System
(1) an inventory and condition
database,
(2) mathematical models to forecast
future pavement condition, results

(3) procedures for conducting

alternative analyses, and
(4) reporting and visualization tools
to facilitate the interpretation and
display of results

Pavement Distress
condition of a pavement surface in
terms of its general appearance. A
perfect pavement is level and has a
continuous and unbroken surface.
Corner Breaks

Description
A portion of the slab separated by a crack,
which intersects the adjacent transverse and
longitudinal joints, describing approximately
a 45-degree angle with the direction of
traffic. The length of the sides is from 0.3 m
to one-half the width of the slab on each
side of the corner.
DURABILITY CRACKING
("D" CRACKING)

Description
Closely spaced crescent-shaped hairline
cracking pattern. Occurs adjacent to
joints, cracks, or free edges; initiating in
slab corners. Dark coloring of the
cracking pattern and surrounding area.
LONGITUDINAL
CRACKING

Description
Cracks that are predominantly parallel to
the pavement centerline.
TRANSVERSE
CRACKING

Description
Cracks that are predominantly
perpendicular to the pavement
centerline.
