Date: 19 December 2017

RE: TASK 1 HUMANITARIAN AID SUPPLY CHAINS

Welcome to SCILaid and to Betaland. You have arrived just in time as your
predecessor, Jake Mulryan, left a short time ago and we certainly need a Logistics
Officer here on the ground. I know that you are new to the SCILaid Organisation and
I need to know that you understand our Operation and our reasons for being here, so
my first few tasks will be asking you to familiarise yourself with these and the
concepts of Humanitarian Aid.

1. Why is there a Humanitarian Aid Operation taking place in Betaland?

2. What type of aid situation is it, and what phase is the Operation currently in?

3. From the meetings with Nicholas Adrinkrah and Stephanie Delbaere, can you
please write a brief statement that summarises the mission and activities of
SCILaid as an Aid Organisation. Which of these activities are SCILaid carrying
out in the Betaland Operation?

Regards

Francois

Answers:

We are providing food distribution in Bataland in three refuge camps full of refugees
from Alphaland. Operation taking place in Bataland because of civil unrest in
Alphaland and camps can be settled in Bataland only. Also we should carefully follow
current weather situation in Bataland, expecting hurricane and problems with heavy
rain, strong wind causing damage in the camps. Also land slides can close roads and
difficulties with food distribution.

So, now we have crisis caused by man in the same time doing on prevention to
minimize disaster caused by hurricane Bharat. This humanitarian response is in the
phase emergency relief phase, ongoing with food distribution. As far expecting
hurricane in the near future we can assume that phase disaster preparedness is
present too. In the media report are stipulated several instruction how and what
should be done to be more prepared for the next disaster with hurricane Bharat
coming.

Currently we have slow onset situation which allow us planning and better aid. In the
near future we can expect the other situation with rapid onset but we can minimize
effects of hurricane by prepare for evacuation, protect how we can homes from
strong winds, following the media report and staying in contacts with colleagues, stay
away from possible flood waters and act accordingly to development current
situation.

SCILaid organization as NGO has intentions to spread own activities and

competencies. Since last few years there are significant improvements. Apart of food
distribution as the main type of operation SCILaid tends to be much closer standard
Sphere project with taking more responsibilities in health and water sanitation. With
this SCILaid will be more recognised as accountability partner and organization
which has standard organizational structure. Also, taking more responsibilities and
humanitarian activities is close to principles of as nature of humanitarian work. Main
intentions are not to be specialized in one activity rather to be humanitarian
organization which adequate responds to the needs on the field. Also, SCILaid tends
to work on improving capacity such as right personnel on right place as well as
internal organization which lead to efficiency in relief distribution and quicker respond.
