LO3 - Evaluation

Weekly blog updates are required, as with every unit. Please

remember to take photos/screenshots as you film/edit. You
might find it easier if you note down a record of what you did each day in a
diary form.

Please use the following guidance to help you with each week.

LO1 This learning objective was researching examples of

your specialism in practice
What have you been asked to I have been asked to research into three
do? different types of sound/music used in a film
scene. I had to look specifically at what music
was used, the way that each piece of music
made the audience feel and how it
added/improved on the scene.
How has researching key By researching into how music is used in different
examples of your specialism in scenes of film, I learnt about the codes and
practice developed your conventions on how to create various emotions
understanding? using sound. I am more aware of all the key
aspects I have to include. For example, during
the chase scene in Psycho, the music at 1:36
suddenly increases in pitch, at the same time as
she loses the car behind her. Even though the risk
is gone, the audience is still put on edge about
what is happening onscreen. All due to the music
changing very slightly.
How has analysing videos helped I now understand more about how the
you to increase your knowledge professionals decide the tempo of the scene
of your specialism? with music, also the methods they use to
decipher the particular emotions felt by the
actors on the scene. I am more aware of using
sound that matches context of the visuals
Did you encounter any problems When analysing the videos, it was difficult to
when trying to analyse videos for decipher the initial emotions of the film and what
your specialism? the scene was trying to tell me with the sound.
What have you done to By watching the scenes multiple times, I got a
overcome these issues? more in depth view on what happens.
What will you implement into your Using my primary and secondary research, I
production from the research understand how important sound is when watching a
undertaken? film. I can incorporate certain elements that will make
the production more involving for the audience. For
example I Know to raise volume and pitch when
tension in a scene is building.
LO2 For this learning objective you worked on planning
and production
What did you learn from your From planning, I mainly learnt how difficult it is to
planning? get official permissions to film at a certain
location. I attempted a few of the coffee shops
near me when finally Caf Copia allowed me to
film in there upstairs.

Doing all the planning also set out in my mind:

the story, the sounds, the emotions and where I
have to be with what equipment. I learnt that
planning everything out previously helps so I can
stick to the plan.
How will this be useful as your Doing this means when creating the final project,
production process continues? I was able to complete all filming and editing
with minimal problems that could hold me back
from completing on time.
What genres/formats have you I have chosen to portray three different
chosen and why? emotions. I used sound and music to match the
context and enhance the emotions. I chose
happy, sad and angry. I chose these emotions
because they are conflicting. All three have very
differing styles of sound, differing in pitch, tempo
and volume.
How much work did you Outside of lesson time I mainly focused on the
complete outside of the lessons? completion of all pre-production work. This
worked out well because I could do all filming
and editing during my time in lesson. This meant I
could distribute my time a lot evenly.
What issues did you encounter During planning I came upon a large issue of
whilst planning and how did you having an actor to play the male role. The
overcome them? problem was that no one was available during
my set filming times.
I managed to negotiate with Matt Sear, a peer in
my class, and arranged a time when he was
available to film.
How did you find the filming and The filming and editing process went reasonably
editing process? smooth. Fitting in all my filming into one week
made editing a lot easier because I was able to
do first edits during week two then final edits in
week three. I was comfortable with the fact I
could finish the productions on time.
When recording the foley sounds for my
production, everything went very well. When
recording sounds of the town, I chose my
location specifically. I went into a small alley next
to a busier road to cause a slight echo and also
to extract unwanted sounds like rustling bin bags
that were too overpowering. I also used a wind
breaker to stop sound contamination of the
wind.

I only had one issue when on the first

Did you encounter any problems Monday, I planned to film the intro. Due to
during filming/editing? How did weather issues (Rain) I couldnt film.
you overcome them? Continuity errors meaning when I film the
next day and their clothes and hair are dry.

I planned for this by checking the forecast

and booked a reshoot for Tuesday when it
wasnt raining.
How do you feel your product I believe that my production has certain
compares to existing professional elements that are similar to professional
products? productions. For example I used very over
dramatic music for all three of the productions to
exaggerate the emotions that I was portraying.
Although the actual filming quality of my
productions could have been better.
Next time I make a production like this, I will focus
on not only sound but also the visual aspects
more.

What area are you looking to Predominantly Id like to focus on the visual aspect of
improve on in your next my production. Currently I believe that I have an
production? average to above average filming quality at the
moment. For my next project, I would like to have a
much higher quality of video to accompany the
sound.

High Grade Tips

Look to use these terms in order to improve the analysis of your own work.

Considered and capable demonstration of processes detailed documentation of your

production process such as still images, and annotated screenshots of your specific
production and editing process including what and why and not just how.
Have you effectively matched the codes and conventions
which you found during your analysis?

The codes and conventions of each emotion is portrayed through sound

in my productions. The codes and conventions of sound in sad scenes
usually uses a slow piano played in minor. From the beginning of my
production this occurs. At 0:24/ 1:27 a slow hip-hop beat has been
introduced to the background music with the piano. I have done this to
represent the fact she is staying strong through the sad time. If I was to do
this again I would probably use a full orchestra instrumental instead to see
if it would have any sort of different feel/emotion. I believe it may have a
much more dramatic feel to it.

Were there any times when this was difficult?

When editing the angry one, trying to find the right music to accompany
the visuals that fit with the context was complex because everything I
found was either too dramatic or had too many sad undertones. I needed
something completely different from the emotions I had previously used. I
made a compromise and went with music that overall built in tension and
still fit with context.

Is your production appropriate for the intended audience?

I believe my production would be targeted at female young adults. As
these scenes are reasonably similar to the way a professional production
would sound, I know that fans of films that include relationship scenes with
break ups and romance would be perfectly appropriate.

A re t he re an y a r e a s w h e r e y o u p ro du c t i o n f al l s s ho rt ?
B e s pe c i f i c .

I think I lost out a lot on the visual aspect of my production

because of my lack of equipment. Caf Copia didnt have an
issue with me filming in the shop but they preferred I didnt use all
my equipment so I had to make do with what I had. I would have
preferred to have a lot more camera angles involved and was
able to use my tripod to have steadier shots.
In editing, there was points where the sound wasnt
balanced enough. Some parts are too loud and some
are too quiet. Next time I would like to focus on
making sure all the levels are constant.

What do you think went well?

The use of sound throughout and the foley sounds I believe have all got strong
elements to them. I think each one fits the context of whats occurring and envelops
the audience into what theyre watching.
