Throughout my life, I have always loved to help others with something as simple as a
small cut, a bloody nose, and even sickness. Therefore, I have chose to become a nurse. I
continue to question my backup or second choice. However, it will be in the healthcare business
no matter what, because of my love with health, anatomy and physiology. Another reason for
choosing a career in a healthcare related field is because of Greys Anatomy. While watching the
show, I admire how fast pace the job is, how there is something new everyday, and how it
matches my outgoing and competitive personality. Altogether, nursing is the career choice that is
First off, being a nurse requires various amounts of skills and work. According to Target
Jobs, nurses provide medical and nursing care to patients in distinct settings like, homes,
hospitals, nursing homes and other areas where people are suffering from an illness or recovering
from acute or chronic mental and physical health. Nurses can take blood pressure, take blood, put
in IVs, monitor patients conditions, and all other sorts of care. To add, nurses are required to be
on their feet all day, which is a very painful and tough skill to have. Next, after one week of
working, a nurse works 36-40 hours a week year round, but of course times will vary depending
on the shift they are on. However, nurses can work on weekends, but never usually work seven
days a week, because shifts are typically longer than other jobs. Overall, going into a field like
nursing requires a lot of skill and may lead to sacrifices with social life, but going into a field that

requires interaction with people can lead to new friends and getting to learn something new
everyday.
Next, there are many classes that are necessary to take after high school and in college.
First, a bachelor's degree and hands-on clinicals are required to become a BSN. With that being
said, the college I am going to attend to begin my career path is Wright State University in
Dayton, Ohio. Wright State Universitys Nursing college is well-known for their achievements
and pre-nursing clinicals to help future nurses get the hang of nursing before they get into the
real world. According to Wright State University nursing page, Human Anatomy I and II,
Biology and Statistics are needed to be completed with a grade of C or better, maintaining a 2.75
GPA adding up to 122 credit hours total for a Bachelor of Science degree. To prepare me for
becoming a nurse, mentorship programs are a good idea to get into a hospital setting and
college choices with the cost of attendance to be around $19,000 including food, room and
board, and books. The amount of money in scholarship I could receive from the college is $2,500
a year. To pay off my cost of attendance of about $16,500, it would be 120 payments of $189.88
per month. In addition, any career in healthcare is going to have a decent annual salary and
benefit packages for every employee. For a BSN in Ohio, the annual salary is between $65,000-
$70,000 a year in Dayton, Ohio. Therefore, going to a four year college with the cost being
$16,500 a year and earning $65,000 a year is worth it. Not to mention, as stated in Chron, Nurses
typically receive the same benefits as all medical employees and professionals. The benefits

sick days and personal time off from work. Retirement plan is usually 401(k) and 403(b). Next,
the distance is only an hour and thirty minutes away, and has different types of entertainment
outside of the campus. Not to mention, their nursing program requires every nursing student to
study abroad with six continents and forty countries to choose from. After all, Wright State
University has everything I am looking for in a college, their nursing program has a lot to offer
for me, and the cost of attendance will not be a problem with my annual income in the future for
paying off my student loans. To add, the classes that are needed are classes I am interested in and
Lastly, everyone always, or at least, should have a backup plan for their major and
college of choice. To begin, if I decide I do not want to pursue nursing any further, I plan to go
into psychology, or physical therapy with a minor in business. To receive further information
about my career choices I would contact Andrea Crace to learn more about Nursing and its
requirements; I would contact a local Psychologist, or even Mrs. Fout to learn about Psychologist
and interacting with people emotionally and mentally; then I would contact Brian Fuller for
additional information concerning Physical Therapy. My backup college choice is Shawnee State
University. Shawnee is my second/back up choice school, because it is cheap, close to home, and
has my career choices. To sum it up, everyone should choose a backup school and career,
because you never know what the field you are getting into is actually like. Also, to have a
second college choice is not going to hurt, because an emergency might come out of nowhere or
you just do not like being farther away from home and want to attend a more local college.
In conclusion, becoming a nurse interests me and will financially and physically benefit
my future. Doing research about nursing and the education requirements have helped me prepare
myself for the next chapter in my life. To start preparing myself, I will continue to do research,
Chandler 4
focus more on school, practice study taking skills, sign up for a mentor program for a hands on
experience and other actions that will contribute to becoming the best nurse I can be. In the end,
if I do not end up becoming a nurse, I know I will be focused and prepared for whatever I choose
to become.
