Technical program
ConMat05 will strive to create an environment of mutual cooperation between experts in
Materials and Structures and provide a forum for active dialogue. The Organizers believe that it is
only through such a multi-disciplinary approach that significant cross-fertilization of ideas can
occur and innovative solutions to our infrastructural inadequacies can be found. Come and be a
part of this unique experience.

Mindess symposium
Concrete: Bridging Materials and Structures
A tribute to Prof. S. Mindess

(Symposium Chairs: A. Bentur, Technion, Israel,

S.P. Shah, Northwestern University, USA, and
N. Banthia, The University of British Columbia, Canada)

A symposium honouring the lifetime

achievements of Dr. Sidney Mindess will be
organized in conjunction with ConMat05.

In his career spanning 35 years, Professor

Mindess has contributed extensively to the
understanding of materials and their structural
applications. As well as being an expert on
the mechanical properties and structure of
concrete, fiber reinforced concrete, and high
performance concrete, Dr. Mindess is very
broad in his approach to materials research,
which includes wood and aggregates. He has
led a number of modern developments in the
application of fracture mechanics, and
continues to do pioneering work on the strain-
rate effects on concrete. Dr. Mindess is very
active in RILEM and chairs their Technical
Activities Committee. As well, he has
authored three widely referenced books.
