Lesson Plan

Grade/Subject: 1 / Math Unit: Vegetable Unit (Vegetable Weight) Lesson Duration: 45 min

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes: Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems.

Specific Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate an understanding of measurement as a process of comparing by:

identifying attributes that can be compared
ordering objects
making statements of comparison
filling, covering or matching.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Learn the concept of weight (measuring heavy and light objects)
2. Learn to compare objects by weight.
3. Estimate objects weight.
4. Sort objects by weight.

ASSESSMENTS
Observations: Key Questions:
Students previous knowledge on weight. What is weight?
Students understanding of weight, heavy and light. Which object is heavier?
Students ability to compare objects weight. Which object is lighter?
Students ability to sort objects by weight.

Written/Performance Assessments:
Vegetable Weight Worksheet
LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
* Scales (4)
* Powerpoint
* Youtube video
* Vegetables (4 groups 3 vegetables for each group)
* Weight Worksheets
* Connect 4 worksheet + dice (sponge activity)
PROCEDURE
Introduction (10 min.):
Review: A quick review of previous days math lesson (Gus the Plus and length).
- Have students talk about the plus sign (what is does, when do we use it?)
- Have students do Gus the Plus adding (a couple times).
- Talk measuring vegetables by length. (what is length)
- Have students circle longest & shortest vegetables.
Transition & Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Length is used to find out how long and how short an object is, but
what if we wanted to know how heavy and object was? What would we be measuring? We would measure its
..weight. Weight is how heavy or how light and object is.
Hook/Attention Grabber: Play Sesame Street Video on weight.
- Before video: Im going to show a brief video on weight. They are going to show you some objects that are
light and heavy. Listen carefully, because Im going to ask you after.
- What were some objects that were light? Heavy? List them on the board. When he dropped the heavy ones
did they make a sound? Why? Did the light ones?
Transition to body: We used a meter stick to measure length, what is a device we could use to measure weight? Put
scale slide on the board.

1
Body (27min.):
Learning Activity #1: Weighing Vegetables (7 min)
- We could use a scale to measure weight.
- Do a couple vegetable slides. To show what happens to scale if it is heavy and if it is light. Have them circle
the heaviest or lightest.
- Today we are going to weigh some vegetables. Pull out a vegetable, have them say vegetable names. Talk
about how big or small it is. Pull out another vegetable.
- Have students guess which one will be the heaviest and the lightest. (could have them hold them and guess).
- Do that with a couple sets of vegetables.
- Put a vegetable in one side. Have students guess how many mini potatoes it will take to balance the scale.

Learning Activity #2: Sorting Vegetables by heaviest to lightest (5 min)

- Ok now we are going to measure vegetables and sort them from heaviest to lightest. (pull out 3 vegetables)
- Have students guess which one will be heaviest, lightest, in the middle.
- Weigh 2. (put them out in front as heaviest to lightest)
- Weigh 3rd with lighter one. If heavier ask if they know which ones heaviest? (We dont. Do we know if its
heavier than the heaviest one? No. So lets weigh it.
- Then have them say which is heaviest, middle, and lightest.

Learning Activity #3: Group Worksheet on weighing vegetables. (15 min)

- Put group worksheet on the board. Give instructions on what to do.
- Split the class into 4 groups. Each get a scale (desk groups).
- Students will do worksheet.
- Assist and observe their estimations and results.
Closure (8 min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Once Worksheets are completed or time is up have class clean up.
- Ask class what weight is?
- Ask each group what their guesses for the heaviest and lightest vegetables were.
- What were their actual heavy and light vegetables? Did it match their guesses?

Have class hand in worksheets and get reading for reading group.

Sponge Activity: Connect 4 get in pairs. Roll the dice twice add numbers together using the plus sign. Then cross off
total in connect 4. First player to get 4 in a row wins.
