Vera Wang was born in New York in 1959 and her parents were from China. When she was
younger, she was a very good ice skater and she wanted to skate in the Olympics. However, she was
very unhappy when she wasnt in the US Olympic team in 1968 and she decided to become a fashion
designer. She worked fifteen years for Vogue magazine, then another two years with Ralph Lauren.
Today, she is a very successful designer. She has her own fashion label Vera Wang and sells dresses for
$25000!

Akio Morita was born in 1921 and he was a businessman from the age of 25. He was the founder of
Sony with his business partner and friend Masaku Ono. At first they werent very successful. Their first
product was an electric cooker and they only sold 100 of them because it always burnt the rice! Today,
Sony is the top of 100 companies in the world.

Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo Da Vinci was from a small town called Vinci, near the city of Florence. His father was a
very rich and important man. When Da Vinci was 16 years old, he was a dedicated art student. After
years old of study he could paint, draw, sculpt and play music very well. His most famous paintings are
the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. The Last Supper was painted on a wall.

But he wasnt just a painter, a sculptor and musician. He was also an architect, an engineer and
an inventor. He could draw flying machines, submarines and mechanical devices. His pictures were
usually complex and full of details.

He was good at many other subjects like Anatomy, Biology, Math and Physics. He also studied
Meteorology and Geology. Leonardo Da Vinci was a very intelligent and fascinating man but maybe his
inventions were too modern for his time.

Jaya Rajah is fourteen, but he doesnt go to school, he goes to New York University. He is in a
class of twenty-year-old students. Jaya was born in Madras in India but now he lives in a house in New
York with his mother, father, and brother. They can all speak English. His father is a doctor.

Zaya was different from a very young age. He could write before he could say Mummy or Daddy.
He could play the piano well when he was five and use a computer when he was eight. Now he studies
from 8.15 to 4.00 every day at the university. Then he studies at home with his father from 6.30 to 10.00
every evening. Jaya doesnt have any friends. He never goes out in the evenings, but he sometimes

Lewis and Clark

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are famous American explorers. In 1804 President Thomas
Jefferson wanted a map of the western United States because at that time people didnt know the area
west of the Mississippi River. Lewis and Clark stared from St Louis at the end of 104 with thirty men and
an Indian woman, Sacagawea. The weather was bad and it was difficult to travel. They stayed for the
winter with the Dakota Indians.

After the winter they travelled over the Rocky Mountains. The Indians helped them find the Pacific
Ocean at the end of 1805. They discovered many new rivers and mountains and they measured
everything for their maps. They started back at the start of 1806 and they finished their journey at the
end of the year. They travelled 12,900 kilometers and discovered that North America was a huge place.

Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. He was a sailor and an explorer, and his
ambition was travel west to Asia. In the 15th century, Asia was important for commerce and dangerous.
Columbus believed that the world round and that the short way to Asia was west.
In 1492 King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain gave Columbus money for his journey. Three
ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, left Spain on August 3rd. The journey was very long, but
after two months, they arrived on an island in the Carribean. Columbus and his sailors called the island
Salvador (Holy Savior). Columbus thought he was in India and that the people on the island were
Indians. He returned to Spain a hero and he brought gold, animals, and new plants to Europe.
Columbuss journey was important because he discovered the New World- the world of
Americas. Today, the U.S has a holiday on October 12th to celebrate Christopher Columbuss first journey
to the New World. Its called Columbus Day.

Dear Mum and Dad.

Well, here I am in Peru on our South American tour. We got to


Lima five days ago. We had a good journey. It took three days by
bus, but we saw lots of things on the way. We didnt do much for
Mr and Mrs J Halstead
the first two days, as a couple of the other guys were ill. We spent
most of the time on the beach. (Theyre OK now!) On Wednesday we 56 Ashton Drive
came up to the mountains, and yesterday we went to the old Inca
Portsmouth
city of Machu Picchu and did some sightseeing. It was fantastic! We
didnt have a lot of time there, but we saw everything and I took PO57BU
lots of photos.
