Marine Sector for Indonesias Economy

By Farih Aminah

There are many of land industries that Indonesia use to growth its economy sector.
According to Indonesia-investment.com, the industrial sector is the sector that currently
contributes most to Indonesias annual GDP growth. The two most important sub-sector of
industry are mining and manufacturing, both being major pillars of the nations economy since
1970s but those sectors has lost its momentum after Asian crisis of the late 1990s. Mining and
manufacturing sectors produce coal, oil, footwear, textile products, gold, paper products,
automobiles, electronics, and many more. We cant deny that those industries are pillars Indonesia
economy growth, but there are also many major economic activities in the maritime sector that can
be used to improve Indonesian economy.

First, fishery. Indonesia well-known for its warm temperature above the sea and its coral
reefs relatively shallow. The warm temperature makes Indonesia crowned as a country with the
highest concentration of biodiversity among the worlds marine ecosystems. Corals in the seas
provide food sources and conducive place for fishes to breed. More than that, with highest
diversity, seafood processing can be used as maximum as possible to produce products like salted
fish, seafood crackers, and canned seafood. Cakalang and Bandeng are two special fish from
Indonesia that salable around the world . In other hand, the fishery industry provides more than
just a source of protein for fisherman, but also it has generated many resorce-based maritime
economic activities such as mariculture, seafood processing and marine biotechnology.

Second, marine tourism . Marine tourism is an important economic activity in Indonesia

because it has a maritime attraction to entertain the tourists such as beautiful island, beaches,
sailing, and diving. For example, Bali, Ora beach, Lombok, Gili island, Belitung, Nusa
Lembongan, and many more. Marine tourism helps to boost Indonesia economic activity to the
local communities by providing jobs and spurring the development of supporting infrastructure
such as hotels and resort. Marine tourism and leisure activities will continue to increase the
development of many infrastructure and generate jobs and economic opportunities that will
benefit people in the region. From this, we will realize that marine tourism should be planned well
because it produces many profits to Indonesia. Although, according to Kompasiana.com,
competitiveness of marine tourism in Indonesia placed under Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand
in South East Asia. It happens because of low promotions and an unqualified human resource, and
the differences regulation between central governments and the locals.

Third, Offshore oil and gas. Indonesia has so many energy deposits in the water especially
in the deep waters that have been discovered or not. About 70% of Indonesia oil deposits in the
deep sea. Data of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK
Migas) recorded by 30 June, shows the revenue amounting to US $ 6.48 billion. The oil and
gas also provides opportunities to other support service providers. Qualified human resources very
needed in these sectors and equipment such as oil rigs, floating production storage offloading
(FPSO) vessels, tankers, and offshore service vessels (OSV). In short, these industries create
employment and facilitates technology transfer of technical skills and knowledge in the field to
regional players.

To sum up, Indonesias maritime potential can be used to develop its economy because
inspite land industries, ocean also has many major activities that Indonesia can rely on. Instability
of land industries making Indonesia maritime sectors have more opportunities to grow up
Indonesian economy such as fishery, marine tourism, and offshore oil and gas.
