AccordingtoapublicationfromtheAmericanCollegeofEmergencyPhysicians,morethan
70%ofemergencynursesreportedphysicalorverbalassaultbyemergencypatientsor
visitors.Morethan75%ofemergencyphysiciansexperiencedatleastoneviolentworkplace
incidentinayear.Thisamountofviolencecausesawidevarietyofissues,evenpastthe
obviousphysicalcomponent.OtherconcernsincludestresstotheEmergencyDepartment
staffandpatients,increaseddifficultyrecruitingandretainingpersonnelaswellasdecreased
qualityofcarefromadistractedstaff.

hospitalviolence,including:

Prolongedwaitsforpatientsseekingmedicalcare

patients,thestaffandthepublicinthehospitalemergencydepartmentandhowemergency
departmentstaffshoulddealwithpotentiallyviolentindividuals.

Theafternoonsessionwillbuildonconversationwithandamongofourpanelofexperts.Their
discussionwillbebasedonresultsofarecentsurveythatwasconductedacrossthe
membershipoftheLHATrustFundsandwillbefurtheraugmentedwithopenmicquestions
andconcernsfrommembersoftheaudience.
