PROCEDURE
Introduction (7 min.):
Review from last class: measuring length. Sorted them from shortest to longest. Today we are going to add vegetables.
What sign do we use to add?
Hook/Attention Grabber: Put Gus the Plus powerpoint online. Ask them about plus sign and what it is. Then tell them
you will read about gus the plus. Listen carefully to what he does.
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Ask them about a plus sign. What does it do?
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: The students will think about prior knowledge on plus sign and listen to
what gus the plus does. Students will understand that the plus sign adds 2 groups together.
Transition to Body: Gus the plus needs help counting his vegetables.
Body (32 min.):
Learning Activity #1: Gus the plus is going to help us as we read Thats 10. Wear gus hat. Use smart board
throughout book. Write 10 at the top of gus & numbers on one side. Have students guess which numbers they need
to make up 10 in the book.
Assessments/Differentiation: Students are engaged in book, are comprehending the numbers, adding 2 groups together.
Learning Activity #2: Gus the plus carrot activity counting carrots and writing total on smart board. Let students
wear gus the plus hat, and have them count the carrots.
Assessments/Differentiation:Ask students how many red, blue and how many total.
Learning Activity #3: Gus the plus will help them count dice. Roll the dice. Write the number. Roll the dice. Write
the number. Add them up and you get = ?.
Assessments/Differentiation: Have students add up dice.
Learning Activity #4: Gus the plus dice worksheet. Give students pairs a dice. Have one roll. They both write the
number. Next student will roll
Closure ( 5 min.):
Have students hand in their worksheets.
Review Worksheet: Ask about Gus the Plus what does he do.

Sponge: Connect 4 worksheet. Students roll the dice and color the number that they got. First one to get 4 in a row
wins. Have students use pencil. One checkmark and one X so they can erase and start again.
