history this holiday sea-
son.
Citizens Building and
Loan State Savings Bank
(CBL), which is celebrating
its 110th anniversary in
2017, recently completed
a video project document-
ing a significant portion of
the areas history.
Greer Relief holds Christmas Morning Shoppe

annual Christmas Morning
Shoppe last Wednesday.
The nonprofit uses the
Christmas program to
provide gifts for its cli-
ents, who earn a trip to
the shop through attend-
ing classes and complet-
ing requirements.
This year, Greer Relief
was able to serve more
than 200 children at the
Century 3 building down-
town.
Without the communi-
ty support, we would not
be able to serve anywhere
near the number of indi-
viduals that we are able to
touch with this program,
said Caroline Robertson,
Executive Director at
Greer Relief.
The parents coming
through this Christmas
shoppe are earning the
opportunity to come
through and take care of
their children for Christ-
mas, she said.

Seriously, I think it de-
pends on two things.
First, are you two
debt-free, or at least able
to provide gifts without
going into debt or hurting
yourselves financially?
Theres nothing wrong
with spoiling the grandba-
bies once in a while.
But dont use Christmas
as an excuse to lose your
minds, blow your budget,
or go into debt every De-
cember. The amount you
spend on gifts?
I would suggest making
it reasonable, not over the
top, and relative to your
income and that of the
household in which the
kiddos live.
The second thing I
wonder about is the ages
of all the grandchildren. I
cant imagine a four-year-
old getting excited over a
gift card. So, if thats the
general age range were
talking about, have some
fun with it!
Head down to the store,
and really put some
thought into these deci-
sions.
On the other hand, it
might be just the thing
for a teenager especial-
ly if you know where they
like to shop and hang out.
Older kids want to make

are still little, please dont

recently had an interview
for a sales management
position. Ive sent a cou-
ple of follow-up emails in
the last few weeks, and
I know Im still under
consideration, but Im not
sure what to do now.
DR: Next time, since
you obviously have a sales
background, how about
treating it like a sales call?
If youre on a sales call,
and the customer needs
to perform some due dil-
igence before deciding, a
smart salesperson will ask
to schedule a follow-up.
Ask if checking back on
a certain day in the next
week or two will work.
You dont want to
be obnoxious, but you
want an appointment of
sorts a time frame
so youll know when to
follow up without being
pushy.
In this situation, I would
recommend sending an-
other email.
You want to walk right
up to that fine line that
separates bold from
obnoxious, because thats
one of things a good sales
manager should be able
to do.
Respectfully tell them
you understand the
decision-making process
takes time, but you need
to know when you can
expect an answer.
Use the idea that youre
a great sales person, and
youre treating this as a
professional sales call.
And dont be afraid to
have a little fun with it.
If youre still under
consideration, that means
they like you.
You could even hint at
the fact they dont want
to hire a sales manager
who doesnt know how to
follow up!
Doctors partner in spine and joint correction

Dr. Wayne G. Laney, who
has 40 years experience as
a chiropractor, is partner-
ing with Dr. Chris R. Jen-
nings to provide joint in-
jections, bracing, therapy
and rehab as well as spine
corrections.
Laney and Jennings
opened Upstate Spine &
Joint, LLC, about a month
ago at 3115 Brushy Creek
Rd., Greer.
I do a very precise pro-
cedure that Ive done for a
long time, Dr. Laney said.
I use an instrument de-
veloped by Georgia Tech.
Laney and his wife decid-
ed to rent another space in
their building in order to
join with Jennings to pro-
vide knee services.
We really want to see as
many people as we can be-
cause theres a great need
in the upstate, Laney said.
Even if all of us [in-
cluding other clinics] do
all that we can, were not
going to see all the people
in need here, he contin-
ued. Its just not going
to happen. I wish it could
because of what Ive gone
through.
Laney, who has had knee
issues for a long time, had
knee surgery three years
ago.
It was a struggle, Laney
said. A couple of years, it
was a pretty tough strug-
gle, and then by the time
I got down to the last cou-
ple of months before I had
my surgery on this knee, it
was almost unbearable.
I had to grit my teeth
going through some of the
end of some of the days,
he continued.
Recently, Laney also had
a stem cell injection from
Jennings in the other knee.
Ive had the stem cell
injection in my knee about
three weeks, Laney said,
and Im already about 20 it was the oldest, largest
percent better, and this
knee was worse than the
one I had surgery on.
While Jennings will pro-
vide the joint services,
Laney will continue with
spine corrections using
the table-mounted Torque

rations and other sorts of
paramedical tattooing,
she continued. That was
something that actual-
ly wasnt really offered
in South Carolina, and I

As a young lady, his wife
was in and out of the hos-
pital.
She saw the top ortho-
pedic guy in southern Cal-
ifornia who wanted to cut
off the back of her neck
to relieve pressure, called
laminectomy, Laney said.
Basically, had that been
done, shed have been very
unstable; shed have been
very unhealthy; and shed
have died early.
Nevertheless, with less
than two weeks until the
surgery, Laneys uncle know something right now
learned about what hap-
pened and told them not
to do the surgery. They
sent him the information
and x-rays, and he invited
them to visit him so that
he could stabilize Laneys
wife.
Thats what we opted there, was pounding a sign
for, Laney said. After in the lawn, saying office

with them and getting cor-
rected as she needed to,
she came back off all her
medication.
Laney, who had finished
the air force, attended col-
lege at the time.

When Laney looked up,
the light had turned green,

Laney has also seen
some recoveries that were
unrelated to his ministra-
tions, including a boy with
muscular dystrophy.
They discovered when
he was four years old he
had muscular dystrophy,
Laney said. When he
came to see me, he was 12
years old.
His arms kept drawing
up and drawing up un-
til they were across his
body, he continued.
The boy, whose arms
were stuck in front of him,
couldnt feed himself or
open a door.
Im a strong Christian,
Laney said. I do the most
precise work, plus my
faith in the Lord. Ive seen
some pretty miraculous
things happen.
When we correct some-

30 years of age or older.
Theyre people that put
a lot of time and thought
into the pieces, Osborne
said. They are people that
come in for a consultation
and have something cus-
tom drawn and really go
back and forth with the
artist to create an actual
piece of artwork.
We dont have racks of
flash to pick random de-
signs off the walls, she
continued.

I wanted to research that a little
further and all I could find was a tweet
he sent October 14th, 2012, presumably
out of nowhere: I have never seen a thin
person drink a Diet Coke. Okay, gotcha.
But then two days later he sent out an-
other tweet which read, The Coca Cola
company is not happy with me--thats
Ok Ill keep drinking that garbage.
Im not sure what might have spurred
the President to relay those thoughts
into the universe, and Im still trying to
figure out if Im dismayed or impressed
by anyone on the planet who can drink
twelve Diet Cokes, or anything, a day.
In regards to health the artificial
sweeteners found in Diet Coke, accord-
ing to recent studies at both Boston
University School of Medicine and the
University of Texas Health Science Cen-
ter foundthat people who claimed they
drank at least one can of an artificially
sweetened soft drink each day were
almost three times as likely to have a
stroke caused by a blood clot, as op-
posed to those who didnt imbibe. Even
more frightening is that the studies also
show that those who drank one can of

away on Sunday, Decem-
ber 17, 2017 peacefully
at home. Born February 5,
1923 in Greenville County,
she was the daughter of
the late Frank Hammett
Henderson and Marjorie
Lavella Huff Henderson.
She was predeceased by
her husband of 67 years,
Lewis Keith Smith, her
brother, William Lee Hen-
derson, brother-in-law.
Wilson Whitner Smith,
sisters-in-law Katherine,
Murice and Grace Smith
and Doris Taylor Hender-
son, and her step-sisters,
Aljean Henderson Bennett
and Mary Frank Hender-
son Stansell as well as her
step-mother, Corrie Reid
Henderson.
She is survived by her
daughter and son-in-law,
Marjorie and Jack An-
derson of Reynoldsburg,
Ohio, her son Wilson
Keith Smith of Gaffney,
SC , grandchildren Warren
Smith, Tamara and hus-
band, Rob Main, Dr. Kevin
and wife, Dr. Megan Smith
and Jonathan and wife,

Eloise was a long-time
member of Faith United
Methodist Church and vol-
unteered to supply flower
arrangements for church
services and also for mem-
bers in the hospitals, nurs-
ing homes, or those who
were homebound. She was
Volunteer of the Year at
Allen Bennett Memorial
Hospital. She was a mem-
ber of the Greer Garden
Club and the Homemak-
ers Club. She won various
awards for her roses and
rose arrangements. She
was employed by Sher-
win-Williams Paint Com-
pany as a bookkeeper and
during WWII, worked at
the Pentagon. She loved
to sew and to garden and
continued to garden past
her 90s. She enjoyed do-
nating antique family
items to the Greer Heri-
tage Museum.
Visitation will be held
Thursday, December 21,
2017 at Faith United Meth-
odist Church, 1301 South
Main Street (South High-
way 14) in Greer, SC from
1:30-2:45PM, followed by
funeral service at 3:00
PM at the church with the
Rev. Robert Goulart and
Rev. Philip Watry offici-
ating. Private committal
service and entombment
will be held at a later time
at Hillcrest Memory Gar-
dens Mausoleum. In lieu

victim from an address on
Abner Creek Road in Greer
on Monday and then at-
tempted sexual battery on
the victim.
According to incident
reports, deputies were
called to another address
on Abner Creek Road by
homeowners who heard
screams coming from
outside and then saw a fe-
male screaming. They said
a man then drove away,
leaving the female behind.
Deputies said they
spoke with the female,
who identified Foster as
the suspect.
The victims age was re-
dacted from the reports.
Foster was charged with
kidnapping and criminal
sexual conduct first de-
gree.
Jail records show Foster
is being held in the Spar-
tanburg County Detention
Center on a $25,000 bond.

The Christmas Classic
has made its way back to
Greer.
Back for the first time
in three years, Greer High
School will host to the
CTSXpress Christmas
Classic, which features
eight teams from around
the Upstate and North
Carolina.
Greer head coach Greg

sible when Travelers Rest
decided not to host its hol-
iday tournament in 2017.

Jackets lose at buzzer

The Yellow Jackets had
Class AAAAAs No. 1 team
on the ropes last Tuesday,
but were unable to pull
off the upset on the road,
falling to Dorman 60-57 at
the buzzer.
With just under five
minutes remaining in the
game, the Greer boys bas-
ketball team led the Cava-
liers by 11.
Dorman hit three,
three-pointers in 40 sec-
onds to erase the lead, be-
fore P.J. Hall sank the shot
that won it.
You never want to lose
that way, but I wouldnt
call it frustrating, Greer
coach Greg Miller said. I
was proud of our guys. We
played great. They are the
No. 1 team in AAAAA for
a reason. Thats one of the
best high school basket-
ball teams around.

Eastside was unable to
overcome the absence of
one of its top scorers last
week, falling to Riverside
at home.
Without Pantry McKin-
ney, the Eastside boys bas-
ketball team struggled to
find offensive consistency
and dropped a non-region
matchup to its rival, 44-
37.
We turned the ball over
at critical moments, head
coach Tom Chamness
said. We were up by six
or seven in the third quar-
ter and ended up letting
them back in. Riverside
forced the turnovers and
made shots. You have to
give them credit. Theyre a
really scrappy team. They
played really hard and
they are never really out
of a game.
McKinney also missed
the Wade Hampton game
coach (Jeff) Neely started
and was in Greer for 14 or
15 years and carried a lot
of pride. We definitely felt
a calling to bring it back,
Miller said.

erry Christmas, yall.
Lets talk about
Star Wars.
I just felt half of you
roll your eyes and turn
the page, but for those
that remain, I cant offer
my opinion on other
am so deeply troubled by
this new film.
Im what you would
call a Star Wars fan. No, I
dont dress up in cos-
tumes or spend my time
offering theories on the
internet, but I love this
series and have since I
was a child.
In fact, The Empire
Strikes Back practically
raised my brother and
I. We watched this film
more times than I can
remember (well, that and
old Michael Jackson music
videos) and missed plenty
of play time outside as a
result.
Star Wars holds a spe-
cial place in my heart and
always will. Even through
questionable acting a
decisions made along the
way, I still had faith that
this franchise would al-
ways at least try to do the
right thingeven if it fell
on its face doing so.
Last week, watching The
Last Jedi, was the first
time I felt the creators
of a Star Wars film were
intentionally leading the
story and the audience in
a bad direction.
For those that are
SPOILER averse, heres
your chance to bail. Im
going to try not to give
too much away, but if you
stay, I cant make guar-
antees. Also, Ive never
claimed to be good at
reviewing movies, so take
my opinion for what its
worth (which may not be
much).
The Last Jedi is a tragic
failure that destroys so
much of what we know
about the Star Wars
universe. Not only does
it nullify everything that
happened in The Force
Awakens, but it also tears
down some of the most
basic structural aspects
of the series. This film
would have you believe
that: 1. The Jedi and their
teachings are wrong, 2.
Theres nothing special
about the Skywalker
family because there are
people out there that
are better (WHY HASNT
REYS FAMILY BEEN TRY-
ING TO SAVE THE REBELS
AND STOP THE EMPIRE
THEN??), 3. Backstories
of main characters do not
matter.
If you can somehow
look past the in-your-face
political messaging and
the terrible humor at ev-
ery turn, what youre left
with still hardly resembles
the Star Wars we know
and love. Simple things
like gravity in space arent
even portrayed correctly,
and the whole film feels
like Disney is going out of
its way to cater to people
who arent Star Wars fans.
This movie ruined the
moments weve been wait-
ing to see. Wonder what
Luke was going to do with
that lightsaber? Get ready
for a stupid joke. Wonder
what Luke will finally say
to Leia when they reunite?
Get ready for a stupid
joke. Wonder if well get
some closure about Han
and why he became an
absentee father for no
reason whatsoever? Keep
dreaming. Want to watch
Luke go out in any sort of
meaningful way? HAHA-
HAHA.
This movie just failed
in every way. And it broke
my little Star Wars heart.
It failed in a different
way than the prequels,
because at least the pre-
quels were trying to be
Star Wars. The Last Jedi
didnt care about its own
backstory, and although
its receiving glowing re-
views for that fact, I hated
it. Im trying to remain
a fan going forward, but
Im not making guaran-
tees. This one did major
damage to a series I know
and love.

three straight games last
week, moving to 2-9 on the
season.
The Tigers struggled in
losses to Chapman (106-
58), Landrum (79-59) and
Carolina (51-41), but head
coach Richie Stevens said
his team learned some
valuable lessons.
We have learned a lot

saders snapped an eight-
game skid with an 87-83
win over Benedict College
in double overtime.
The Crusaders took the
lead less than two minutes
into the game and held on
to it until late in the game.
The Tigers gained a
small one-point edge in
the second but Ayano
Shelton snatched it back
for North Greenville on
the next possession.
The Crusaders took a 15

This is a one day iden-
tification Event for pro-
spective NGU mens soc-
cer Players. This event is
open to 9-12 grade players
as well as transfer players.
The cost of the event is
95.00 for the date which
includes morning session,
lunch on campus, campus
tour / admissions tour
and after noon sessions.
No over night accommoda-
tions are included. Over
night arrangements can be
made and airport pick ups
can be arranged.
Players should bring all
soccer equipment they ex-
pect to use including wa-
ter, ball, cleats and shin

Fairview Baptist to host Night to Shine Prom

world to host the Night
to Shine Prom for people
with special needs this
February.
The event is sponsored
by the Tim Tebow Foun-
dation and was pursued
by Fairviews Nathan Bran-
non, who started Hope
Week at the church a cou-
ple of years ago.
Its to show that God
loves everyone no matter
how youre created, and
its a tangible way that we
can do that as the church,
said Brannon, who is coor-
dinating the event.
Night to Shine, which
will take place on Feb. 9,
is a prom night experience
for people with special
needs, ages 14 and older.
This worldwide movement
is set to take place in all
50 states and 15 countries
around the world, and
the numbers continue to
grow.

a couple of months, she
will begin taking Koda to
work; and once the pup
is six months old, she
will become registered as
a therapy dog and will be
allowed to work with the
clients.
Currently, Maxey has
nine regular, weekly cli-
ents and around five cli-
ents who use Visiting
Angels on an as-needed
basis. But Maxey is hoping
that now that they have
partnered with the V.A.,
she will finally realize her
dream of helping veterans.
We attend a lot of se-
nior networking events,
and we are partnering with
Upstate Warrior Solutions
as well, said Maxey, who
is on the board for the
National Association of
Professional Women. We
will help veterans connect
with the V.A. and to get
approved by a V.A. doctor.
Then the V.A. will pay for
our services instead of the
veteran.
Currently, Visiting An-
gels also assists spouses
of veterans through its
Aid and Attendance pro-
gram. But the services
apart from that program
and do not have to be re-
lated to a war injury. While
Visiting Angels does not
provide medical care, they
will assist in day-to-day
activities, such as eating,
dressing, bathing, cook-
ing, cleaning, laundry, and
other daily needs.

pher Nolan brings to life
in a handful of words the
uncertainty and terror,
the hope and heroism of
300,000 soldiers stranded
and vulnerable on a beach

about. Odds are, however
that, unless that dreamer
had a lot of cinematic
knowledge or production
help, the movie wouldnt
be very good. In 2003, a
middle-aged man named
Tommy Wiseau spent
six million dollars of
his own money making
The Room. Not only
was it bad, but its widely
considered one of the five
worst movies ever made.
The genesis of that
catastrophe is the subject
of James Francos offbeat
comedy, The Disaster
Artist. Its a strange,
funny and perplexing
film that proves truth
can indeed be stranger
than fiction. Franco plays
Wiseau with impressive
conviction, while his
brother Dave takes the
role of Greg Sistero, the
young acting student that
lived and worked with
Wiseau while shooting
The Room.
After a marginal first
half, The Disaster Artist
hits its stride when we
finally get to the set of
the doomed project. Seth
Rogan, Zac Efron and
some other funny actors
make these sequences
quite amusing, even as
Tommys cinematic vision
crumbles around him.
The movie is fairly
well-acted and executed,
provoking deep interest
in Wiseau and his mys-
terious history. To this
day, no one knows his
age or roots. In fact, most
of what is known about
him and his doomed
movie was documented
in Sisteros 2013 book,
The Disaster Artist: My
Life Inside the Room, the
Things
Greatest Bad Movie Ever
Made.
Franco deserves a great
deal of credit for taking
that book and making a
compelling film of it. As
the closing split-screen
montage reveals, he plays
Wiseau terrifically. I didnt
see The Room before I
saw The Disaster Artist,
but I would recommend
that you do. Its hilarious-
ly bad and will likely put
you more in tune with
Francos humor than I
was, especially early on.
Many directors have
proven over the years that
you dont need a whole lot
of money to make a good
movie. What Francos film music. Howard and crew
illustrates is that money
cant atone for ignorance
when it comes to any seri-
ous attempt at art.

Other effective treatments
include a graded exercise
program (graded means

building up), which helps
more than half of people
improve. Finally, optimal
treatment of her underly-
ing conditions may help,
though Im sure her doc-
tors are trying to do that

Tigerville Elementary held Holiday Bash

On Dec. 4, the entire Ti-
gerville school community
got the Christmas Season
off to a spirited start with
its annual Holiday Bash.
Faculty, staff and par-
ent volunteers held ses-
sions of Reindeer Games,
Ornament Making, and
Christmas Stories with
Santa, while the chorus
performed hilarious holi-
day tunes and the drama
team presented, How the
Grinch Stole Christmas.
Parents and students
traveled from station to
station enjoying all the
festivities.
There was even a high-
ly animated rendition
of The Twelve Days of
Christmas by the Tiger-
ville faculty and staff to
wrap up the evening.

While some may think

once New Years Day
comes and goes, for Chris-
tians, the season contin-
ues into January with the
feast of the Epiphany.
The Epiphany occurs
12 days after Christmas,
which falls on January 6
(or January 19 for some
Orthodox churches that
celebrate Christmas on
January 7). The Epipha-
ny celebrates the Three
Kings, also known as the
Three Wise Men, who vis-
ited Jesus shortly after his
birth.
The Epiphany is cele-
brated by Catholics and
Orthodox Christians.
Among Hispanics, the day
is known as El Da de los
Reyes.
