1. Find the mean, the median and the mode.
2. Which measure of central tendency is the most appropriate for this scores and why?
ANSWER

1. Arranging numerals by ascending order

3, 5, 9, 12, 12, 17, 100.

Formula for simple mean is given by,

Where xi is sum of all data values while n is number of data items in the sample.

Mean = 3 + 5 + 9 + 12 + 12 + 17 + 100 = 170/8 = 21.25

Median = Median is the middle number
If n is odd then Median (M) = value of ((n + 1)/2)th item term
Therefore 8+1= 9/2 = 4.5 th value.

We cannot find exactly 4.5th value, but we have 4th value which is 12 and also 5th value which is
12.

By adding 12+ 12 gives 24
According to formula 24/2= 12

Median is =12

Mode is the most occurring value, which is 12

2. Mean is , 21.25 , median ,12, mode 12

In logical way I dont find any value is suitable

If we find range (Larger value smaller value) it is 97.

Any of these value do not give correct impression of generalized idea.

Comment: None of these values are suitable for generalized representation.

1. It is convenient, if it is arranged in ascending order as follows

So, 84-3 = 81

Mean is

3 + 6 + 9 +10 + 15 + 21 + 27 + 28 + 42 + 8 = 245/10 = 24.5

Position of Q1 = (10 +1)/4

= 2.75th value, which is 6+ (9-6)

At an examination it was felt appropriate to pass 75% of the candidates. From

previous years the average mark obtained at the examination was known to be 68%
with a standard deviation of 14. What must the pass mark be if the above is to be
achieved?

Percentage of students = 25 % = 0.25

0.5 X = 0.25
-X = 0.25- (0.5)
X = 0.25
