Area Demographics

In Boston, 52% of the population are female. 72% of the female population are 21 and over, with 59% of them being under 67. This

number is significant for many reasons. Firstly, the transitional homes we will be designing are aimed towards women in need of shelter.

Women over 21 and younger than 67 are often more prone to being victims of domestic abuse. 25% of the population have a child, meaning if

shelter is needed, it is best for a transitional home to be prepared for a mother to bring her children for protection as well. In Massachusetts,

there are at least 21,135 homeless people. Of these people, there are 3,545 homeless families with children and pregnant women. Boston has

rough winters. Temperatures can become very low. Boston is often hit with strong winter storms called Nor’easters, which are characterized by

strong, biting winds.

“THE SHELTER FOR ABUSED WOMAN AND CHILDREN”

After speaking to Crystal at “The shelter for abused woman and children”, I was able to

collect a lot of useful information. This project began in 1986 out of a four-plex size building.

Today the building has expanded to 30,000 square feet in an undisclosed Florida location serving

the areas of Naples, Immokalee and Bonita Spring 24 hours a day with a confidential crisis

hotline. It is the only domestic violence center in Naples, Florida.

The organization keeps their location a secret for the safety of their clients. This is a save

environment similar to a college dorm with enforced curfews for everyone’s safety. There are 13

individual rooms with private bathrooms and closets, four shared kitchens, meditation room,

children library and two common living areas. When a participant is accepted in the

organization, all the immediate needs are covered at no cost. Basic items and necessities like

food, toiletries, laundry detergent, shoes, bed linens, school uniforms and hair-cuts are provided

form the get go. The facility does not offer medical care. The staff is CPR trained and certified

and participants may be referred to a specialist if necessary. The length of stay of a person is

usually twenty-nine to fifty days, unless the individual is approved for a Transitional Living

Program that extends up to two years maximum.

Besides taking in abused woman and children, this save home offer programs and

services to help their guests heal, and in time, help them transition into the community.

The shelter has developed approximately 31,963 safety plans and 675 community education and

professional training events to help individuals of all ages. Their “counseling program” helps

woman, children and men ease the stress caused by the abuser and understand the need to re-gain

control of their lives. “Gentel’men against domestic violence” is another program that

encourages male and female equality and promotes the fact that males aren’t inherently violent.

This particular group maintains an active role in the nearby community accentuating the

importance of healthy dating and relationship. The organization offers advocacy programs and

“healing art programs”, where the participant is able to express himself/herself using creative

writing, painting, music and other proven avenues to deal with their trauma and find their own

solutions in the process.

This shelter for abuse women and children’s mission is to join force with the community

to prevent and protect against domestic violence as well as human trafficking, using

empowerment and advocacy to educate the community. To achieve the organization’s mission

315 volunteers and 66 employees offer their services every day. Their vision is a community free

of domestic violence and human trafficking, a community of peace and safety. This is not a

government agency, but a private nonprofit organization. It is important to note that they accept

any types of donations, including furniture. The organization is funded by private donations,

state grants, special events and money of the sales from their own unique thrift store.

The building that its being transformed into a transitional home for homeless women and children was donated by the city of Boston,
Massachusetts. This is a program organized by the city to support and empower woman to become self-sufficient and independent.
With this housing program, the government provides temporary affordable housing to these families as well as recreational areas for
reading, table game, child care and computer access within the building.
This Federal Style building is localized in a historic district and its exterior was recently renovated. The interior will be also designed in
a Federal Style.
As a person enters the building from the main entrance and hallway, the beautiful patchwork textured ceramic flooring and two
JUSTIFICATION candelabra chandeliers will make anyone feel welcome. At either side of the hallway will be a couple of 1 and 2 bedrooms apartments,

Gathering

THE SOLUTION
the director’s office, a child play area and a gathering space. Every one of the apartments are ADA Standard compliant for easy
access. The gathering area is also ADA compliant, there we find the TV/ lounge seating area, and multiple configuration tables with
comfortable chairs. The east wall of the gathering area sports a large built-in cabinet. The built-in cabinet provides a computer area,

room bookshelves, display area and a music center.

The materials chosen for this interior, including the upholstery, are durable, resilient and easy to maintain. The neutral color palette
with a variety of gray tones and natural furniture finish with brass accessories makes the space feel homey. The Installation of white
base moldings, crown moldings, and ceiling medallions will make the space look sophisticated and upscale.
With attention to details and proper use of Universal Design principals this new building will provide the ideal environment to
empower these mothers and children to start a new productive life.
Residential Design II is a hands-on experience into the real process of designing a space. In earlier classes I learned
different steps to take before jumping into the purchase of flooring and lighting. This time I had to follow the process
step by step to create a save housing, while keeping with the Federal Style. Furthermore, the materials to achive the
REFLECTION
Gathering classic design had to be affordable and durable.
There was a great amount of research involved. Research on adequate materials, lighting fixtures, furniture, safety,
ADA standards, and Universal Design was time consuming and very long at times, but definitely necessary. Working in
room teams was stressful at first but later became a good experience and I learned to appreciate the input of other team
members in the process. I realized that receiving constructive critiques from other students makes me a better person.
Drawing in AutoCAD in more detail was also interesting. As interior designers, we must learn to look at a project from
different points of view to arrive to the best possible design.
