Virginia Henderson's Theory – Definition Of Nursing

Major Concepts

Person(patient/client)
 Person to be the primary importance and that is the reason why the theory is client centered
 Individual person or client is a whole, complex and independent being with biological,
sociological and spiritual components.

14 Fundamental of Basic Human Needs:

1. Breathe normally – The patient's breathing was facilitated by mechanical ventilator.


2. Eat and Drink adequately – The feeding of the patient was facilitated via organic feeding
increasing the gradual volume.
3. eliminate body wastes – The patient's diaper was changed by the caregiver. In the event that the
patient had perianal abrasion, zinc oxide was applied for faster healing.
4. Move and maintain desirable position – The patient was turned every 1.5 hours to prevent
pressure ulcers.
5. Sleep and Rest – To facilitate a quiet and comforting environment by reducing stimuli in the
environment.
6. Select Suitable Clothes Dress and Undress – The patiemt was dressed with hospital gown.
7. Maintain body temperature within nomal range by adjusting clothing and modifying the
environment – The patient was placed in a thermoregulator machine to hypothermia.
8. Keep the body clean and well groomed and protect the integument – The patient's incision site
was cleaned in a regular basis. Bath of the patient was also provided.
9. Avoid danger's in the environment and avoid injuring others – The bassinet of the patient was
filled with pillows to support the baby. This is to avoid any harm or injury that may happen to
the baby.
10. Commumicate with others by expressing emotions, needs, fears or opinions – The family of the
patient was encouraged to express emotions, needs, fears, and opinions regarding the
procedures.
11. Worship according to one's faith – The nurse re-iterated that with constant prayer, it does not
only renew faith but supports and gives strength
12. Work in such a way that there is a sense of accomplishment – The interventions made to the
patient is systematic and organized.
13. Play or participate in various forms of recreation – Music was played in the patient's room.
Stimulation was also done when the baby was touched and cuddled before sleeping.
14. Learn, discover, satisfy the curiosity that leads to normal development, health, and use available
health facilities

Nursing
-The unique function of the nurse is to asist the individual sick or well, in the performance of
those activities contributing to health or its recovery.

Health
-There are also special developmental situations where the nurse is needed, such as when the
very young and the very old cannot meet their basic needs.
-A nurse functions independently of the physician, but promotes plan, if there is a physician in
attendance.
-The nurse can and must diagnose and treat the situation demands it
