CE 477 – Summer Session 1, 2017

Assigned Tuesday, June 13, 2017

Due Wednesday, June 21, 2017, 8:00 AM

The house construction tasks on the following page are to be organized into a schedule using
Microsoft Project, which is installed on several computers in the department’s lab. As discussed
in class, ProjectLibre is a free, open source alternative to MS Project. If you have access to
Primavera, you can use it, but the instructor won’t be much help with it. Begin construction July
1, 2017, and work Monday-Friday. Do the following:

1. Determine the precedents for each task. They are in no particular order as presented.
Explain any non-obvious precedents. Do not include any redundant predecessors.
2. If you recognize that a task that should be included is missing, add it in and estimate
(that is to say, make up) the cost, required resources, and duration. Identify
appropriate predecessors.
3. Use MS Project or a similar program to organize the tasks and determine the
minimum time to completion for the project. This should include leveling of
resources.
4. What is the minimum duration and earliest completion date for the project?
5. Identify your critical path.
6. Calculate the timing of each draw on the construction loan, assuming half is drawn at
the beginning of each task and half is drawn at the end. If the annual interest rate is
10% and compounded daily, what is the total cost of the project and the cost of
financing?
7. In your report, include the following:
a. A Gantt diagram of your finished project.
b. A PERT diagram of your schedule.
c. A resource allocation table.
d. A cash flow diagram, showing each cash draw and the cumulative balance on the
construction loan, including interest.
8. What resource bottlenecks do you see in the project? Be specific.
