Innovation
After a brain, storming research on innovation and its aspect to increase the usual ability and comfort ability,
we came up with the idea of reverse gear mechanism which will act as our innovation for ASME-HPVC 2017
event.

Design
The sole motto of team was to design and manufacture a device or mechanism which was not yet developed
in human powered industry. We have research on several aspects, which included a reverse mechanism but
it was only used in motor vehicle so, we incorporated that mechanism in the three-wheeler human powered
tricycle.

The need for reverse gear mechanism in three-wheeler trike is very crucial specially on wheeler with full
fairing as it is easier to move out of vehicle in no fairing than to on fairing. The reverse mechanism helps to
reverse the tricycle whenever needed specially, in parking scenario or in traffic jam. It also increases the
comfort ability and ease of usability.

Including reverse gear mechanism in vehicle increases the art of making human powered vehicle as it is
essential installation day to day travelling with the HPV. The design gives the addition feature with the
existing frame work by not taking any major space in the vehicle.

The innovation thought to be feasible due to effective implementation of similar system in automotive
industry. The system also expected to be challenging as it includes higher mechanical knowledge, since it is
complex to develop.

The physics used in the mechanism can easily be justified and does not notice any general concept. The
material used for developing the system in costing and affordability available in market.

Concept Evaluation
The prototype was the main selection basis whether the innovation will be install in the final vehicle. Our
main concern was to ensure that the prototype is fully functional and available for daily usage. The
mechanism involved three spur gears, two of same thickness and other is twice their thickness. All three-
spur gear are assembled three different shafts. The thicker gear is set to transmit power from main chain
ring to the cogs with the help of two thin spur gear. The power transmitted to the cog was then transmitted
to the back cassette with the transferring medium as chain. The cogs are configured with anticlockwise
direction with respect to the main cassette which is in clockwise sense so that when vehicle moves in
forward, the reverse mechanism would not interfere. Also, a lever will be attached to the thicker spur gear
which will allow to remove the gear contact and reduce the friction that could be produced during high
speed event.

The solidwork design was modelled to develop the concept of mechanism and better understandability. The
model and working prototype are shown below.
(figure 1 solidwork design of mechanism)

(figure 2 mechanism tested on prototype)

The prototype achieved the anticipated benefits as it worked accordingly to our expectation. It was able to
transfer power from main chain ring to back cassette without any mechanical problems.

The innovation showed major unanticipated benefits, which was not expected as our innovation was on
preliminarily phase. It shows more speed with less applied force for reversing of the prototype. Also,
frictional force was much lesser though we used nylon spur gear in prototype and showed the efficiency of
60%.
Learning
Initially we wanted to analysis our idea on the manufactured gear which were available on our workshop,
having variation and defects in their respective pitches but had same internal diameter which can be fitted
in the same axis. But due to the variation in dimensions and pitches there was stiffness in the system and
also showing discontinuity in transferring power from thicker gear.

After the study of the failure, team decide to manufacture aluminium gear instead of nylon to avoid
deflection and to increase mechanical efficiency. And also, shaft will have aligned in horizontal axis to
transfer power efficiency.

The overall result of the innovation was satisfactory but having an only negative aspect that when the vehicle
was carried out simultaneously. So, a lever was introduced to cut the supply of motion between front and
reverse gearing system.
