0 INTRODUCTION
It is to be estimated that the waste generation rate in Malaysia is about 9,092,000
tons/year as in 2020 correspondence with the increasing in population. Meanwhile,
based on previous study the average solid waste generated per person per day in
Malaysia is ranging from 0.5 kg to 0.8 kg in rural area whiles at the urban area, the
average of solid waste generated per person per day at urban area is 1.9 kg. Hence the
waste generation rates are increasing each year especially in the urban area. This will
eventually lead to insufficient landfill and difficulties in managing the waste. In
managing solid waste, it is highly important to consider the characteristic of the solid
waste generated by knowing the waste composition, generation rates and sources. The
source of the waste generated comes from different sectors. This also may include waste
from residential, commercial, industries and institutional. Statistics had showed that
nearly 50% of the waste generated in Malaysia is household waste. Meanwhile, 36.73%
of wastes generated are from household followed by 28.34% from industrial and
construction wastes and 34.93% from other sources.

In summary, household waste contribute the most on the waste production.

Moreover, the pattern of the consumption of household waste is changing
correspondence with the changing lifestyle of the Malaysian over the years. In planning
a good waste management, it is highly important to identify the waste composition on
the household waste. Waste composition consists of variable type of materials or
substances and waste composition is different on each country. Therefore, the
availability of reliable data is also different and it is highly dependable on the country
waste generation.

Basically, household waste is a type of waste based on the normal household

production on day to day operations of households. In Malaysia, the composition of
households waste are consists of organic waste, paper, plastic, napkins, glass, metal,
household hazardous waste, rubber, textiles, leather, garden and others waste.

Furthermore, waste composition can be divided into two categories which is

organic and inorganic waste. The quantity of organic and inorganic waste is depending
on the country itself. The data on the waste composition is limited especially in local
area. Therefore, reliable data on waste composition is highly needed. For the past years,
years, Parit Raja’s population increased and the economy becomes more stable due to

1
the existence of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), which clearly had
increased the waste generation in the area. In order to implement proper planning on
Household Solid Waste (HSW) management, a study on the local needs to be done. A
reliable data on the waste generation rate is difficult to achieve especially on small town
town or city like Parit Raja. By analyzing the household waste the waste generation rate
rate and any potential use for recyclable wastes can be identified. Meanwhile the local
resident’s composition of HSW reflects their way of their living and attitude.

Nevertheless, the composition of waste generated are able to determine the

possible treatment method and through proper management practice, the waste
composition rate will be changed. The composition of the waste generated is
inconsistent due to seasonal, standard of living, legislation factor and culture which
makes it is more difficult in defining and measuring the waste composition rate. In
addition, the students are among the community living in Parit Raja, the consumption
of HSW pattern might be different. Parit Raja is lacking of disposing facilities for
recyclable items.

Additionally, slum area is usually are not included in the waste collection routes
by the local authorities. Therefore, the waste generated by the household is fully under
the responsibility of the resident. In addition, previous paper stated that the waste
generation rate in slum areas are expected to increase if the urbanization is increasing at
the rate of which faster than the local authorities can handle. Without a proper guidance,
this will only contribute to the household waste generation rate and eventually will
worsen the household waste management.

Other than that, lack of concern or knowledge among the local society especially
students will eventually bring out a negative impact to the composition of the household
household waste. The practice of 3R, which is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle concept can
can be determined by the composition of waste generated by the house resident. One of
of the major concerns is solid waste in residential area where had potentially exposed to
to pollution and threat with solid waste disposal. Each house at residential area has the
ability to generate solid waste. This situation occurred due to lack of awareness about
cleanliness, recycling and effect to the environment, community and existing landfill.
Moreover, lacks of solid waste management at residential area also contribute to
increase solid waste disposal. Different houses produce different compositions of solid

2
waste based on occupants of house. It is important to identify and evaluate the
composition of solid waste at the residential area to determine the most items disposed.
disposed. The aim of this study is to suggest the villager at Parit Haji Salleh Ros on how
how their dispose waste in proper ways and help villager to clean up their village
together. This study was able to reveal the local attitude on the waste management
throughout the questionnaire that was distributed during the investigation.

3
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Be it used plastic bag, broken glass, or others wastes, they are all used
products that required disposal to limit their harm to environment. Waste
disposal is there for a systematic action for managing waste from its origin to its
final disposal. It concludes incineration/burning. Burial at landfill sites or
discharge at sea, lake and river. The consequences of improper waste disposal
include surface and groundwater contamination, air and soil pollution, spread of
disease, aesthetics and odor problems, emission of methane that is a fire hazard
and blockage of drains (Othman et al., 2013). Hence, there is the need for proper
waste management (Kassim & Ali, 2006)

Our group chooses this topic and will do this research to find the solution
to solve this problem. Waste management is both an urban and rural problem.
Every person is a potential generator of waste and thus a contributor to this
problem. Nowadays, waste management became a serious and complex issue. It
was reported that Malaysians produced 33,000 tons of solid waste daily in 2012,
exceeding the projected production of 30,000 tons by 2020 (New Straits Times,
2013).

In this case, every person needs to join hands in dealing with this problem
that has far-reaching environmental and human health effects. The wastes may
cause much environmental pollution and is not good for human. According to
Tian et al (2013), though wastes management can diminish the wastes volume,
various kinds of air pollutants contained in wastes are released into the
environment through the process of wastes management. These wastes have
become a threat to the environment.

This research provides an analysis of the problem of waste management at

Parit Haji Salleh Ros village, Parit Raja. The villagers shall be more responsible
for the collection, segregation, recyclable and reusable waste. This research was
carried out in Parit Haji Salleh Ros village which is located in Parit Raja and it
takes time for eight weeks to do and complete this research.

4
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

The garbage collection system is not well managed in village Parit Haji
Salleh Ros. People dispose the garbage wherever possible mostly in the
drainages or the river banks. This has led to huge environmental pollution
deteriorating the health of mankind and the other living beings. People trash the
garbage in many ways they want. We can see garbage all around the village Parit
Haji Salleh Ros including in the roads, play grounds, parks, river and else.
People throw the garbage without realizing that it is affecting their own health
and will deteriorate the future generation’s living standard. So, the problem of
this study is to identify how waste management in Parit Haji Salleh Ros village.
The other problem at this village is, Parit Haji Salleh Ros village don’t have any
public bin or recycle center to the villager dispose or recycle the waste and no
management from MPBP. In addition, villager lack of knowledge of disposing
the wastages

1.3 OBJECTIVE

To suggest the villager at Parit Haji Salleh Ros village on how their dispose
waste in proper ways and help villager to clean up their village together.

1.4 HYPOTHESIS
1. The waste management problem in Parit Haji Salleh Ros village is caused
by unawareness of people.
2. Excess waste in Parit Haji Salleh Ros village cause spaces to be limited and
environment problem.
3. People stays unaware are due to their lack of concern on their surroundings.

1.5 SIGNIFICANT OF STUDY

As we can see the major problem we are facing at the Parit Haji Salleh Ros
village here is the unscheduled for collecting garbage at housing area and also
the Morning street mart which will be conducted 3times a week. Due to this

5
progress the amount of rubbish been thrown and the collected rubbish from each
garbage bins are overloaded. The Central Government of Batu Pahat, whom is
in charge of this severe problem, should put some initiative to reduce or to solve
this problem at Parit Haji Salleh Ros village. The firstly affected to residents of
Parit Haji Salleh Ros village going through this problem for more than few
months ago. As the President of Parit Haji Salleh Ros village Residence, he said
the residents been affected from some health issue and received complaints from
all people who comes to the street mart. Secondly, the students of UTHM whom
comes to the place to buy food feeling uncomfortable and some had a bad vomit
while eating at one of the restaurant there due to the smell of garbage. As the
survey from 30 respondent, they are totally not satisfies and looking forward for
betterment at Parit Haji Salleh Ros village as soon as possible.

1.6 LIMITATION OF STUDY

The problem of waste management at Parit Haji Salleh Ros village is:

1. Parit Haji Salleh Ros village will be selected in Parit Raja area for our study
case.

6
2. The first issue to choose Parit Haji Salleh Ros village is because we have
limit area nearby UTHM. And the same time that place have high
opportunity can found problem management of waste. The cost for
everything in the study also have limit, do the study in lower cost.

3. In this study just selected 30 peoples, because have not enough time to
analysis in few weeks. 30 people randomly select to represent to answer the
question for data.

1.7 PROCEDURE/METHODOLOGY

When doing a social research, it is important to thoroughly describe which

method is used in order to make it accessible for the readers and to be able to
process it in scientific manner. The Research method is a supporting subject
which is used to accomplish in a variety of research. It is a system of models,
procedures and techniques used to find the result of a research problem. For this
project the methodology been used is:
7
1. Questionnaires:
Questionnaires were used by the researcher to gather facts about waste
management at Parit Haji Salleh Ros village. The form will give to 20
or 30 respondent. The question provided 20 questions and will
distribute to Parit Haji Salleh Ros villager.

2. Interview:
An interview is a conversation in which the researcher tries to get
information from the interviewer. The method assumes that the
respondents to be interviewed have the information required such as
they can understand questions and will be willing to give answers while
they are face-to-face. Interview will be done with 1 villager from Parit
Haji Salleh Ros village. This method can give more data to us know
how the villager dispose the waste.

2.0 FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

The above pie chart shows that females are dominantly on this survey
within Parit Haji Salleh Ros village with 57% which mean 17 female
respondents involve in this survey. Meanwhile, male respondent only 13 people
represent 43% as the second respondent that participate in our survey about
waste management. From the result, be known that Parit Haji Salleh Ros village
are consists slightly higher female villager than male who participate in this
survey.

The amount of females seems to be higher then males because the village
consist of high amount of females at the time we went for survey due to males
most of them went to their work.

Notice that the chart shows the highest respondent in Parit Haji Salleh Ros
village are those who in the age of 21 – 30 years old with 30% (9 respondent).
Second is by the group in the age of 31 – 40 and 41 – 50 years old with both
20% (6 respondent), followed by the group in the age 15 – 20 years old with
14% (4 respondent). Last but not least, is by the group in the age 51 – 60 with
13% and last is by the group in the age 61 and above with 3% (1 respondent).
As we can see, the respondent at Parit Haji Salleh Ros village that participant in
this survey is from all type of ages. This shows 21-30 aged people are students,
and youths staying at the village for rental and the lowest aged 61 above because
no old people there as they passed away so long ago.

At this question 3, we just gave the respondent 3 choose answer, which, a

is 1 – 4 people, b is 5 – 8 people and c is 9 – 12 people. From the column chart,
shown, the most respondent chosen answer is b with 5 – 8 peopling and represent
60% that living in one house. Second highest with 9 respondents and the percent
is 30% is 1 – 4 people living in one house and last one is 3 respondents with 10%
who choose to answer c which is 9 – 12 people in their house. The chart for a’s
is slightly lower than b’s, meanwhile for c’s is lowest from the other two.

This shows the highest amount of people in a house were 5-8 because the
number of people at the village for each family consist of at least of 5 children
and together with cousins.

Total 30 100

The above column charts show that the highest respondent living at Parit
Haji Salleh Ros village in less than one year with 9 respondents and last one is
the respondent choose more than 20 years with one respondent. The result
percentage shows 30% living less than one year, 17% of living at the village for
1 to 2 years, 20% of them are living in the village for 3 to 4 years, respondents
whom living 5 to 9 years represent 17% respondent, 13% more was living for 10
to 19 years and the rest were 3 % whom living at Parit Haji Salleh Ros village
for more than 20 years.

The reason why we knew the waste management is not properly conducted
because the max amount of people there are newly shifted whom are living there
less than a month and they been not really shown the proper way to throw their

12
wastes. Even the people who lived more than 20 years were 3 only and they
don’t really been communicating with the new shifted people around.

Question 5 is about the villager’s highest education level. From the

respondent, 0 people stated that none, 2 people stated they are primary school
education, 8 people stated that they are high school, 14 people stated that they
are university graduate. 3 people stated they are vocational training, and lastly 3
people stated they are others.

13
The highest number of respondents were university graduates because the
most whom are living for the rental house with 4-6 person in a house were
students of UTHM. The second highest were high school students as the most of
the children at the village are with 5-7 kids in a family and all were schooling.
The least were 2 who studied till primary school as those people must be aged
around 50’s.

As the last question to know information about our respondent, which the
respondent was asked what is their major occupation. The result from 30
respondents were three are doing Farming, four said they are doing business, six
of them are working as Government servant, ten of them are students, three are
staying unemployed, and the rest four of them are doing some other jobs.

We could strongly say that the most respondent are students as the reason
is they are the main visitors and the most commonly go around the area for
buying neither food nor things. The government servants were second highest as
they might be the lecturers of UTHM.

2.2 Questionnaire Method (Waste Management)

about waste management

QUESTION 7

Ever heard Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) Yes 28 93

(b) No 2 7

Total 30 100

As from the question no. 7 which asks the respondent if they ever heard
about waste management. The result from 30 respondents was 28 of them
answered yes and they aware and also heard about this not at their place but in
some other social media or newspapers or even magazines. But the saddest part
was two of the respondents answered no because they never at all heard about
this waste management in any way of learning even been said by any people
around them.

This might be the reason those two people are old folks who staying in
house as they don’t go out of the house at any moment.

16
2.2.2 Title: Percentage of Respondent by has the respondent ever been
educated on proper waste disposal

QUESTION 7%

YES

NO
93%

Ever been educated Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) Yes 28 93

(b) No 2 7

Total 30 100

From the question no. 8 which asks the respondent if they ever been
educated on proper waste disposal by the council. The result from 30
respondents we got to know 28 of them said yes and the other two were no with
their answer.

The one answered yes, they been properly educated for this matter where
they must follow and maintain correct disposal method from even they were
childhood and even they grow till old age they teach their grandchildren for a
proper disposal of any kind of waste because a small amount of waste will
become a biggest mountain sized waste once if it’s been done always.

17
2.2.3 Title: Percentage of Respondent by is there any public bins near
respondent house

QUESTION 9

YES

NO

100%

Any public bins Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) Yes 0 0

(b) No 30 100

Total 30 100

From the question no. 9 which asks the respondent on the existence of
public bins near their houses. The result from 30 respondents, which made our
one chart to rise up not equally where all the 30 respondents answered no. This
definitely shows that there was not even a single rubbish bin placed for public
usage by their resident government.

This is the most disappointing part which really the government or the
resident council must keep an eye on or take a proper immediate action for their
residents not to find hard in disposing wastes properly in the public bins. This
problem may occur continuously which could end up of bulge of waste at their
own living residents. The percentage value shows sadly 0% on the answer yes
and fully 100% in the answer of no which actually unexpected from the
respondents.

18
2.2.4 Title: Percentage of Respondent by had they often empty or disposes
their waste

QUESTION 10

33%
YES
67%
NO

Often empty or dispose waste Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) Yes 10 33

(b) No 20 67

Total 30 100

As from the question no. 10 which asks the respondent on does they empty
or dispose their house waste container often. The result from 30 respondent’s
shows only 10 of them answered yes, and the balance 20 answered no. which
really shows in percentage as 33% said yes and 67% said no.

This really shows the responsibility and cleanliness of each and every
resident are must be starting from their own houses. At this situation the bigger
number of residents answered no and they don’t really clean up their waste
containers unless if there is any functions or celebrations at their house. The
respondents who cleans often even daily keep the environment even cleaner than
their houses as they know the way of taking a good care of surroundings and
they knows clearly the consequences of the part if it is done opposite. The health
too got affected from the improper taking care on wastage disposal.

19
2.2.5 Title: Percentage of Respondent by if their think disposal method is a
problem in their neighborhood

Waste disposal method is a problem Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) Yes 30 100

(b) No 0 0

Total 30 100
As from the question no. 11 which asks to the respondents of does they
think method for disposal of waste materials is a problem at their
neighbourhood. The result from 30 respondents where shown all the 30 of
them answered a same that’s a yes. The result of 30 respondents in percentage
shows 100% fully answered for yes which none of them where 0% says no for
the certain question stated below.

They really think nobody around them knows the proper method on
disposing the wastage even by throwing it in a rubbish bin. They say the people
around just dump rubbish tying with a big plastic bag and collect it at one
pedestrian walking area. These even shows nobody talks to each other and they
begin to blame others of their wrong doing even they don’t really knows even
what they doing now is also one of major cause for this improper waste taken
place. This is really matter which shouldn’t be carried on by upcoming
generations.

20
2.2.6 Title: Percentage of Respondent by if respondent ever notice any waste
on road, land or public area near their house

Ever notice any waste Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) Yes 30 100

(b) No 0 0

Total 30 100

As from the question no. 12 which asks to the respondents that have they
realised or noticed any waste at the road, land or public area nears their houses.

The results from the 30 respondents were a biggest yes from all the 30 and this
definitely shows never have the place for no here. The percentage number of
result from respondents for the total of 30 respondents say 100% yes and 0% as
no.

This shows people aware of the garbage and a lot of untidy staff near their
housing area and also a lot been collected at the street mart area. These shows
it’s not that these people didn’t take a mind of care but they really don’t know
what to be done. All these residents definitely can do their complaints at the
Majlis Perbandaran Batu Pahat (MPBP) or even do an oral awareness among
the people around there.

21
2.2.7 Title: Percentage of Respondent by if respondent ever heard of any
health problem due to improper waste management

Ever heard of any health problem due to Respondent Percentage (%)

improper waste management

(a) Yes 24 80

(b) No 6 20

Total 30 100

From the question no. 13 which ask to the respondents if they ever heard
about any health problems due to improper waste management. The results from
these 30 respondents were only 24 of them answered yes The percentage of result
of respondent from 30 of them says 80% of them are on the side of yes and rest
of 20% are really on the side of no.
That they really aware of some critical health issues occurs from this
wastage such as Dengue fever, skin allergic, lung damage, eye irritation, kidney
failure and many more. At the other part about six respondents answered that
they really don’t know about any health issues due to this wastage around their
living place. This is due to the situations they might not get affected in any health
issues even once or their family members too due to this wastage.
22
2.2.8 Title: Result and Percentage of Respondent by where do their usually
dispose their waste

Usually dispose Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) By the valley/river 7 23

(b) By the road or street side 4 13

(c) On an open space 3 10

(d) in a hole in own compound 8 27

(e) Burn the wastes 6 20

(f) Eco-friendly way 2 7

(g) Others 0 0

Total 30 100

As from the question no. 14 which asks to the respondents that where they
usually dispose their wastage. The result from all the 30 respondents were
collected from the choices of the answers where seven of them answered they
dispose by the valley/ river, four of them dispose by the road or street side, three
respondents answers they dispose on an open space, eight of them answered they
dispose their waste in a hole at their own compound, two of them answered they
dispose their waste in such eco-friendly way, and the rest six of them answered
by burning the wastes. The result of this questionnaire in percentage of 30
respondents are 23% of them dispose by the valley/river, 13% of them dispose
23
by road or street side, 10% of them are really throw at open space, 27% of them
on a hole in own compound, 20% burns their wastes, and the rest 7% of them go
into as eco-friendly method on handling of throwing the wastes, the 0% is others.

This shows the maximum number of respondents answered they dispose

their waste by doing a hole in their compound which is a good matter of
disposing but the part which makes us worry is there are also respondents
dispose their waste by valley/river, burning, throw at road side or street side
which all these methods are the cause of all these wastages and these people with
this immoral character must get a proper punishment for their doing and they
must be given a proper method of disposing waste ways by the council.

2.2.9 Title: Percentage of Respondent by how respondent evaluate the

condition of waste disposal in their village

Scale Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) 1 (very good) 0 0

(b) 2 (good) 0 0

(c) 3 (not good) 11 37

(d) 4 (very not good) 19 63

Total 30 100

24
The question no. 15 shows and questions the respondents that how do they
evaluate the condition of waste disposal in their village. The result of 30
respondents are been collected by their answers from circling the rate which their
responds were 0 at the rate of 1 which is very good, 0 at the rate of 2 which is
good, 11 of the respondents answered the rate of 3 which is not good, and the
rest of 19 residents answered the rate of 4 which is very not good. The percentage
of the total result from the 30 respondents for this questionnaire are 0% were on
the rate 1 which is very good, 0% were on the rate 2 which good, 37% of the
respondents were on the rate 3 which is not good and the rest 63% of the
respondents say the rate 4 which is showing a definite very not good for the
condition of waste disposal at their village.

This definitely shows none of them satisfied with their own surrounding
and their living place as 19 of the respondents say very not good condition on
the way their village disposing the wastage. Some of the respondents even ask
for our help for awakening the awareness among people there for a proper way
of waste disposal. They also asked for our help to complain this to the higher
officers for an immediate action for their better life for their upcoming children
and the other visitors and this request is mostly done by the people whom are
doing their own business such selling breakfast and having restaurants.

2.2.10 Title: Percentage of Respondent by how far do you know about the
environmental impact of wastes

25
Scale Respondent Percentage (%)

(a) 1 (very good) 13 44

(b) 2 (good) 13 44

(c) 3 (not good) 4 12

(d) 4 (very not good) 0 0

Total 30 100

Question 16 is about how far the villagers are aware about the
environmental impact of waste. From the respondent, represent for 44% which
mean 13 people stated that they were very good and good aware of the impact
of environmental waste. A total of 4 people stated not good with 12% where they
were unaware of the awareness of the impact of environmental waste.

This is because they are also often exposed to the importance of

maintaining the cleanliness of their village area regardless of age factor. To those
who say they are less aware, this is because of their own misbehaviour because
they do not know about the program. They are also likely to be from the less
fortunate where they have no equipment such as television, radio and others until
they are left behind by the awareness of keeping the village clean.

waste management. There are also 5 people a stated not good. Percentage from
the data collected is 70% choose very good, 20% choose good, 3% represent for

people whom stated not good.

This is because when they manage the garbage disposal well, the waste that
is to be disposed of is placed in the bin or the location provided so that pollution
problems can be avoided. For those who are unaware that waste management is
important to prevent pollution, they will be one of the sources of pollution or
their do not aware about their village environment.

Compare this pollution problem with years ago, the problem of pollution in the
village Parit Haji Salleh Ros village now worse than then.

31
2.3 Interview method

For data analysis, our study has two types of method to collect data. First
method is distributing questionnaires to 30 villagers to answer. And then second
method is having an interview by random selected villager in Parit Haji Salleh Ros
village.

In the picture on top is our members to have interview with Mrs Syahirah
binti Mohammad Kamalruddin, 34 years old, is a house keeper. She is one of the
villager of Parit Haji Salleh Ros village, and she tell us her opinion about the waste
management is a main problem will make the environment become dirty. But she
cannot change the whole area of the village, because she just one part of the village
and have limited power to solve this problem. Meanwhile, to make sure the village
clean and not polluted all villagers must work together to clean and dispose waste
in proper way.

In the interview we have ask Mrs Syahirah do her have heard about waste
management before, and she answer of cause heard before however she just high
school education level, but she go through society early have a lot of experience.
She also knows a few smart ways to manage waste of her house, like separate the
types of rubbish and garbage or do 3R (reduce, reused and recycle). Easy for

32
Majlis Perbandaran Batu Pahat (MPBP) to manage and recycle the thing she
didn’t use again.

We ask Mrs syahirah one more question did not show in the questionnaire,
the question is about suggestion “if you have one position of government, what
will you do to save environment at her village or Malaysia?”. Mrs syahirah think
a while, and answer “I will focus and teach how important to take care of our
environment starting from kindergarten and primary school. Because this two
phase is very important time and right time to insert good information and good
action to let students follow.” This mean Mrs Syahirah has planned to teach her
children about environment for future and start from now, she is a good mother.

In the conclusion of the interview we know that some of the villager have
clear mind about the important of the environment in the living place, but still have
some of the villager still think “I don’t care, I don’t mind, and never mind about
the dirty on that place”. We know that a person have limit power do something,
but if a lot of peoples work together nothing is impossible. Maybe they just need
a right time and right way to have a big change in life.

3.0 CONCLUSION
The proper management of the solid waste may reduce the environmental
problems, generally resulted due to improper disposal of waste. The health hazards
associated with the disposal of solid waste may also reduce by employing the scientific
management system for the solid waste.

The inadequate methods adopted for disposal of solid waste are responsible for
the serious health concern. Open dumping of garbage facilitates the breeding for
disease vectors such as flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats and other pests.

The study of baseline data of management of solid waste of Parit Haji Salleh Ros
village includes the information about the waste collection, storage, transportation and
disposal system of Parit Haji Salleh Ros village. The data regarding the solid waste
collection, storage, transportation disposal system in Parit Haji Salleh Ros village the
system employed for the solid waste management is inadequate.

The hypothesis is accepted. It was found that the solid waste was not disposed
scientifically and till the citizens are facing the solid waste problems.

The details investigation about the existing status of solid waste management of
Parit Haji Salleh Ros village reveals that:

i. The waste collection bins were not properly used by the citizens.

ii. There were no waste segregation systems at source.

iii. At most of the place open space adjoins to the road were used as waste storage
depots.

iv. The vehicle to collect the wastes to landfill does not exist.

v. The improper collection, storage and disposal methods were responsible for
result some secondary problems such as feeding of stray animal on waste.

vi. The disposed waste was found responsible for the blockage of river or valley.

vii. The waste dispose by burned or being bury in a hole in own compound.

34
As we can conclude from our survey by doing 2 methods which is questionnaire
and interview, we can say the villager at Parit Haji Salleh Ros village knew about the
environment problem and knew the impact of waste that happen at their village but
only minor villager take action. The minor villager whom take their responsibility to
take care and make sure the village clean and away from pollution, they disposed waste
in a proper way like doing 3R or eco-friendly ways such as bury the waste that can be
bury (not including things that can be recycle).

Villager also concerned about environmental pollution in their village and knew
them responsible to contribute to manage waste but nothing they can do to ensure their
village cleans because every person at the village has different view about awareness
in environment issue. This problem could be solved if all villagers work together to
clean and to take care of their village before something more worse happen in the
future. May be the head of villager can make a letter to MPBP about put public bins at
the village and had collectors came to collect their waste to dispose at the dumping
area or send the recycle things to recycle center.

35
4.0 RECOMMANDATIONS

i. Villager whom aware about the problem can make a campaign to awaken the other
villager who did not want to take their responsibility.

ii. Need of employment of proper solid waste segregation system at source and
collection point.

iii. Need to adopt the suitable collection system i.e. separate waste bins to be kept at
the collection point and send to recycle center. iv. Need to adopt color codes to
the collection bins for the collection of wet and dry waste or for degradable and
non-degradable waste.

v. Waste should not be stored at open place, corporation has to increase the existing
number of waste bins. So, as to avoid the problems of epidemics and stray animals.

vi. The villagers must cooperate to make sure clean and take care about their village
environment to avoid dieses.

vii. The effect and effectiveness of solid waste management system is to be monitored
at regular time interval and need to modify the existing system accordingly.

viii. Head of village may be can make punishment if know the villager whom disposed
waste by the river, valley, road or else.

ix. Villager can do a competition about whose house had highest collected the waste
that can be reused and recycle.
