Facility History
Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a natural, geologically formed, open-air theatre located in the 868 acre Red Rocks Park,
which is set in the Rocky Mountain foothills, fifteen miles west of Denver. The majestic setting of the amphitheatre,
along with the view of the Denver panorama from the top of the theater is breathtaking. The allure of the two 300 foot
sandstone monoliths, Creation Rock (stage right) and Ship Rock (stage left), combined with a naturally occurring
theater set on a mountain stage is not duplicated anywhere in the world. The theater provides perfect acoustics and was
once listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The area of Red Rocks, originally known as the Garden of
Angels, has attracted the attention of musical performers since before the turn of the century. The dramatic sandstone
monoliths are a history book of the life of plant and animals in the area for the past 250 million years.
Red Rocks’ chronicled history as a venue for talent and entertainment began early in the 20th Century by the owner at
the time, John Brisben Walker. He had the vision of major artists performing on a stage, nestled into the acoustically
perfect setting. With this in mind, he actually produced a number of concerts between the years 1906 and 1910 on a
temporary platform. Although he was considerably wealthy, Walker pleaded with the City of Denver to purchase the
park to completely finish the dream. In 1927, George Cranmer, Manager of Denver Parks, convinced the City of
Denver to purchase the area of Red Rocks from Walker for the price of $54,133. Cranmer was able to continue the
dream of the theatre by first convincing the Mayor of Denver, Ben Stapleton to proceed with the project and then
enlisting the help of the Federally sponsored Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Work Projects Administration
(WPA) to provide labor and materials for the project. Denver architect Burnham Hoyt did the design of the
amphitheatre with an emphasis on preserving the natural beauty of the area. The design was done in 1936 and the
amphitheatre was dedicated on June 15, 1941, although the total time to complete the project covered 12 years.
It was in 1947 that the annual Easter Sunrise Service first began. Since then, Red Rocks Amphitheatre has attracted the
best of performers to the delight of the fans. Our two signature monoliths have embraced Hendrix, Garcia, the Beatles,
Bono, symphonies and opera. The new Burnham Hoyt Visitor Center contains a Performers Hall of Fame that
showcases many historic performances as well as a geologic history of the park.
Event Sponsorship
Event Sponsorship is permissible for shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Any signage or event sponsorship is restricted
to areas designated by Red Rocks management. Generally, event signage and displays are acceptable around the stage
area. Red Rocks management must approve additional locations. Red Rocks retains venue advertising and sponsorship

III. LOGISTICAL INFORMATION
Stage
The stage, only 10 feet from the first row of seats, is a permanent concrete pad with the following specifications:
Allowable Loads:
A maximum of 38,000 lbs of lights & fixtures may be supported from the roof structure in the following
configurations:
a. Up to 25 psf (pounds per square foot) of uniform load can be applied to bottom chord members.
b. Up to 4,000 lbs of concentrated load can be applied at either the bottom or top chord member panel points with
a maximum of 8,000 lbs total to each joist. Panel points are defined as the locations where the diagonal members
(e.g. 1 ½” diameter standard weight pipe) frame into the top and bottom chord members.
c. Up to 1,000 lbs of concentrated load can be applied to the bottom chord members between the panel points with
a maximum of 8,000 lbs total to each joist.
7
d. No additional load shall be applied to the top chord members between panel points.
e. Lighting loads are not concurrent with snow loading.
The lighting and fixture load recommendations above allow the distribution of these loads up to the top chord of the

XI. FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT
ADMISSIONS (FDA) TAX
Article VII of the Denver Revised Municipal Code imposes a ten percent (10%) Facilities Development Admissions
(FDA) tax upon the purchase price of each admission to any entertainment, amusement, or athletic event or other
production or assembly staged, produced, convened or held at any facility or property owned by the City. This includes
Red Rocks Amphitheatre and the Denver Coliseum.
This tax is commonly referred to as the "Seat Tax" and applies to BOTH for-profit and not-for-profit entities.
Section 53-347(1) provides exemption on "admissions to events in which the persons participating or performing in the
event are not paid or do not compete for money...;" e.g., an amateur boxing tournament or a high school basketball
game.
Complimentary tickets used for an event at a City facility are not subject to FDA tax since there is no consideration that
would constitute a purchase price. Complimentary tickets must be marked as such on both portions of the ticket.
Conversely, any tickets traded or exchanged for services or tangible personal property are subject to FDA tax based on
the value of the property or services received.
EXAMPLES
1. Tickets are sold to the AAAA high school state basketball championship game. The participants in this event are
not being paid for their performance; therefore, tickets purchased for this event are not subject to the FDA tax.
2. A local concert promoter gives a group of tickets to a radio station to be awarded as prizes in contests. These are
complimentary tickets and as such are not subject to FDA tax. If the tickets had been traded to the radio station for
commercial air time, FDA tax would be due based on the price of the admission or the value of the air time,
whichever is less, received in exchange for the tickets.
3. The same concert promoter trades 100 tickets to a local computer dealer for a laptop computer. FDA tax is due
based on the value of the computer received in exchange for the tickets or the price of all of the tickets, whichever
is less. This same transaction would also subject the computer dealer to a use tax liability based on the cost of the
computer withdrawn from inventory. These types of transactions are referred to as "trade-outs."
THE ABOVE INFORMATION IS A SUMMARY IN LAYMAN'S TERMS OF THE RELEVANT DENVER TAX
LAW FOR THIS INDUSTRY OR BUSINESS SEGMENT. IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR LEGAL PURPOSES TO
BE SUBSTITUTED FOR THE FULL TEXT OF THE DRMC AND APPLICABLE RULES AND REGULATIONS.
