College program preps workers for what’s next

Skyline’s SparkPoint Center open doors for county workers, students

Between the career guidance, finan-
cial coaching and food pantry avail-
able to clients of the SparkPoint cen-
ter at Skyline College, it’s no wonder
the center’s halls are lined with open
doors.
Aimed at helping students at the San
Bruno community college and mem-
bers of the surrounding community
hone the wide array of skills needed to
advance their careers, the center’s
setup as a hub of community resources
is by design, said director Chad
Thompson.
“We try to make it so there’s no
wrong door,” he said.
Though one of the focuses of the
center staff is helping clients increase
their incomes, Thompson and his team
know the path toward their clients’
goals often isn’t limited to complet-
ing job applications and preparing for
interviews. Which is why in
November the center joined forces
with the NOVA Job Center, a nonprofit
employment and training agency, to
fold even more specialized career serv-
ices into the wide range of resources
the center already provides for its
clients.
Thompson said it’s not unusual for
clients who initially find the center
seeking advice on how to find a job
with better pay to work with staff on
questions of personal finance, such as
managing their budgets. He added that
many clients aren’t always thinking
about how their credit might affect
their job prospects, so staff are keenly

State preps for pot-infused fare

SAN DIEGO — The sauvignon blanc
boasts brassy, citrus notes, but with one
whiff, it’s apparent this is no normal
Sonoma County wine. It’s infused with
THC, the psychoactive ingredient in mari-
juana that provides the high.
Move over, pot brownies. The world’s
largest legal recreational marijuana market
kicks off Monday in California, and the
trendsetting state is set to ignite the
cannabis culinary scene.
Chefs and investors have been teaming up
to offer an eye-boggling array of cannabis-
infused food and beverages, weed-pairing
supper clubs and other extravagant pot-to-
plate events in preparation for legalization
come Jan. 1.

Washington and Colorado and California’s
longstanding medical marijuana market
already spurred a cannabis-foodie move-
ment with everything from olive oil to heir-

Cannabis-laced dinners with celebrity
chefs at private parties have flourished
across Los Angeles, San Francisco and San
Diego in recent years, but a medical marijua-
na card was required to attend.
With that requirement gone, the edibles
market is expected to boom, though manu-
facturers face a host of regulations, and doc-
tors fear the products could increase emer-
gency room visits and entice youth.
Marijuana industry analysts predict edibles
for the recreational marijuana market will
top $100 million in sales in 2018.
“Californian’s culinary expertise is far
more refined from college kids making pot
brownies in a dorm,” said John Kagia of
Frontier Data, a cannabis market research
firm.
Expect a slew of vegan and gluten-free
choices and low-dose snacks from trail
mixes to chocolates. And they may well be
served at a gym or Pilates studio.
“This is the dawn of the Amsterdam-style
cafe in the U.S.,” Kagia said. “We expect to
see spaces that are targeted to cannabis con-
sumers that capitalize on the arts and enter-
tainment offerings of California and really
create unique and elevated experiences.”
That includes ethnic options in a state
with the largest immigrant population in
the U.S.
“Now you see all kinds of cuisines,” said
Cristina Espiritu of the 420 Foodie Club,
which has promoted cannabis food events
in Southern California that have included
everything from Mediterranean dishes to
Filipino specialties. “There’s going to be

WASHINGTON — Craft breweries are rais-
ing a glass to the Republicans’ new tax over-
haul: It cuts the excise tax on beer. Retailers,
long saddled with heavy tax bills, will get
relief. So will some high-profile names in
corporate finance, led by Wells Fargo.
The tax measure that President Donald
Trump signed into law Friday distributes ben-
efits across a range of American industries,
from construction to health care.
“As a general rule of thumb, everybody’s
doing well under this bill,” Martin Sullivan,
chief economist at Tax Analysts, says of
U.S. companies. “When you give out a tril-
lion in tax breaks, it’s hard to create a lot of
losers.”
No wonder the stock market has been roar-
ing in anticipation of fatter after-tax corpo-
rate profits. The new law slashes the corpo-
rate tax rate to 21 percent from 35 percent. It
applies a low one-time tax to the profits that
corporations have long kept overseas to
avoid paying taxes under the current higher
rate.
It also delivers a windfall to people who
pay personal taxes on business earnings. It
lets companies immediately write off the full
cost of new equipment. And it showers good-
ies on some individual industries, such as
craft brewers, distilleries and wineries.

burdens of corporations is to free up money
for companies to invest in buildings, equip-

ment and people and thereby juice the econo-
my — and, in turn, benefit workers. Yet main-
stream economists have expressed mainly
doubts that workers will benefit much from
corporations’ lower tax burdens.
In dollars, the biggest tax savings from
2018 through 2027 go to manufacturers:
$261.5 billion, according to an analysis by
the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn
Wharton Budget Model. Next-most-fortunate
are insurance and finance companies ($249.4

Not all industries have gained equally from
loopholes. Retailers, for example, would
have paid a 27.5 percent rate in 2018; under
the new law, they’ll pay just 15.6 percent.
“The tax bill is a big shot in the arm for
retailers, who have traditionally paid taxes at
nearly the full amount,” says Matthew Shay,
CEO of the National Retail Federation.
Shay says he thinks the bill will help
retailers accelerate investment in e-commerce
and mobile technology. He also predicts that
the bill will induce foreign-owned retailers to
shift investment dollars into the United
States.

NEW YORK — Three large U.S. cities filed
a federal lawsuit Tuesday against the
Department of Defense, arguing that many
service members who are disqualified from
gun ownership weren’t reported to the
national background check system.
New York City, San Francisco and
Philadelphia said in court papers that the
military’s broken system for relaying such
information helped spur the massacre of 26
people inside a Texas church last month.
“This failure on behalf of the Department
of Defense has led to the loss of innocent
lives by putting guns in the hands of crimi-
nals and those who wish to cause immeasur-
able harm,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio
said in a statement. “New York City is join-
ing Philadelphia and San Francisco to stand
up to the Department of Defense and demand
they comply with the law and repair their
drastically flawed system.”

Alexandria, Virginia, seeks an injunction
and judicial oversight to ensure ongoing
compliance with the Defense Department’s
obligation to submit records.

A Pentagon spokesman on Tuesday said he
couldn’t comment specifically on the law-
suit. “The department continues to work
with the services as they review and refine
their policies and procedures to ensure quali-

“significant numbers” of disqualifying
records to the FBI’s national background
check system allowed former U.S. Air Force
member Devin P. Kelley to buy a rifle and
shoot 26 people to death Nov. 5 in a
Sutherland Springs, Texas, church, the law-
suit said. Kelley had been convicted of
assaulting family members in a 2012 court
martial and should not have been allowed to
purchase a gun.

Media face challenges in
rush to sexual misconduct reckoning
NEW YORK — Talk-show host Tavis Smiley isn’t just
upset with PBS for firing him on sexual misconduct
charges. He’s upset about his depiction in the media.
Smiley believes that if he hadn’t talked publicly about
romantic relationships with subordinates at his company,
the behavior that led to his downfall, the public would make
little distinction between him and those who have been
accused of sexual assault or rape.
Conflation of different forms of misbehavior — the idea
itself is controversial — is one of the issues facing media
organizations covering the fast-moving story of sexual
misconduct that went into overdrive with investigations
into Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein’s behavior.
“The media is painting with too broad a brush,” Smiley
said. “We have lost all sense of nuance and proportionality
in how we cover these stories.”
Actor Matt Damon was torched for broaching the topic
recently. He told ABC News that all accused men shouldn’t
be lumped together because there’s a spectrum of behavior.
There’s a difference between a pat on the rear and child
molestation, he said.
“Both of those behaviors need to be confronted and erad-
icated without question, but they shouldn’t be conflated,
right?” he said.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The
Democrat in a tied race for a Virginia
House seat that could affect which
party controls the chamber said
Tuesday that she’ll ask a court to
declare the tie invalid and her the win-
ner.
Shelly Simonds and her lawyers said
the court failed to follow state elec-
tion law by allowing a ballot to be
counted a day after last week’s recount,
among other errors. The campaign
said it will ask the same court to
reconsider its decision.
In the meantime, state election offi-
cials said they postponed their plan to
break the tie Wednesday in Richmond
by drawing names from a bowl.
James Alcorn, chairman of
Virginia’s State Board of Elections,
said in a series of tweets that drawing
names “is an action of last resort.”
“Any substantive concerns regard-
ing the election or recount should be
resolved before a random drawing is
conducted,” he wrote.
The race between Simonds and
Republican Del. David Yancey is for
the 94th House of Delegates District
in Newport News. If Simonds were
declared the winner, it would split
party control of Virginia’s House 50-
50.
A rare power-sharing agreement
would have to be brokered between
Democrats and Republicans. If no
agreement can be reached, prolonged
chaos could ensue.
Simonds appeared to have lost
November’s election by 10 votes.
Then she appeared to have won a
recount by a single vote last week. A
day later, a court in Newport News
declared a tie.
“At the end of the day, this is really
about the integrity of elections in
Virginia,” Simonds said during a con-
ference call with reporters.
Ezra Reese, an attorney for
Simonds, said Tuesday that the court
erred in following election law
because it allowed an uncounted ballot
to be challenged by Yancey’s cam-
paign after the recount concluded.
Yancey’s attorneys told the court
that a Republican election official was
“confused” about election guidelines.
The official had let the vote remain
uncounted before raising concerns the
next day.
The court allowed Yancey’s attor-
neys to challenge the ballot.
On the ballot in question, the voter
had picked Republican candidates in
statewide races. For the 94th District,
the voter filled in the bubble for
Yancey and the bubble for Simonds.
But he or she also drew a single slash
through the bubble for Simonds.
Yancey’s attorneys argued that the
ballot was clearly a vote for Yancey.
Simonds’ attorneys disagreed.
The court ultimately counted the
vote for Yancey, which brought the
tally to 11,608 votes each.
Gretchen Heal, a spokeswoman for
the Yancey campaign, declined to
comment Tuesday on the Simonds
campaign’s planned litigation. But
Heal said Yancey stands by the argu-
ments made last week by his attor-
neys.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Donald Trump is predict-
ing that Democrats and Republicans will “eventually come
together “on a new health care plan for the country.
Sending a Twitter post early Tuesday from his Florida
resort, Trump said “the very unfair and unpopular Individual
Mandate has been terminated as part of our Tax Cut Bill,
which essentially Repeals (over time) Obamacare.”
Much of former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care
Act remains intact, however, and the sign-up period for the
various options was carried out as normal this year.
Majority Republicans sought repeatedly to repeal the
2010 law this year, but couldn’t get it through the Senate.

New Year in Midwest and Northeast

MOSCOW — The Kremlin hinted Tuesday
at possible legal repercussions for Russian
opposition leader Alexei Navalny over his
calls for a boycott of the March presidential
election.
President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman,
Dmitry Peskov, wouldn’t comment on the
Election Commission’s decision to bar
Navalny from running but said the “calls for
boycott ought to be carefully studied to see
if they are breaking the law.”
As expected, Russia’s top election body
on Monday formally barred Navalny from a
presidential run. Navalny, an anti-corrup-
tion campaigner and Putin’s most promi-
nent rival, promptly put out a video state-
ment saying that the ban shows “Putin is
terribly scared and is afraid of running
against me.” He called on supporters to stay
away from the vote in protest.
Meanwhile, Putin’s backers convened
Tuesday afternoon to formally nominate
him for presidency after he announced that
he will run as an independent candidate.
Prominent lawmakers, film actors, musi-
cians and athletes gathered at a Soviet-era
exhibition hall to endorse him. Putin did
not attend because of other engagements,
Peskov said.
Putin, who has been in power for 18 years
and is expected to easily win another six-
year term, has so far refrained from cam-
paigning. Navalny, meanwhile, has been
aggressively seeking votes all year, reach-
ing out to the most remote parts of the coun-
try.
Peskov rejected suggestions that
Navalny’s absence from the ballot could
dent the legitimacy of Putin’s possible re-
election.

“It’s winter. I can’t sleep in the street,”
Rasooli said.
Asylum opens the way for temporary
housing, but only one-third of the 95,000
applicants this year were accepted, govern-
ment officials say.
The huge makeshift camp in the English
Channel port city of Calais, dismantled last
year, was emblematic of the problems. Its
residents were dispersed around France, but
others keep coming in hopes of reaching
Britain, and are finding a rude welcome.
France’s highest administrative body said
the migrants have been subjected to inhu-
man and degrading conditions, and an
investigation ordered by the interior minis-
ter found that it was “plausible” that police
used excessive force against migrants, as
Human Rights Watch maintained.
A bill overhauling asylum and immigra-
tion policy will be debated in the spring,
notably expediting asylum demands but
also doubling to 90 days the time a person
without papers can be held in a holding cen-
ter, the last step before expulsion — an
approach the government says is “bal-
anced” and “efficient.”

Making moves: From the Bay to the Northeast

T
he Bay Area is a very, very
nice bubble — but neverthe-
less, it’s a bubble. Before
moving to Boston for college, I had
never lived outside the Bay Area. I
attended private, Catholic schools
from kindergarten through high
school. Those schools were small,
required a uniform and lacked diversi-
ty. For those of you in high school
who are thinking about where you
want to apply for college, or seniors
who feel uneasy about your decision
to move across the country, I assure
you that while leaving the Bay Area
bubble is scary, it’s worth it.
College is a time of incredible free-
dom — no one is really responsible
for you, and you’re not really respon-
sible for anyone besides yourself —
so now is the time to take calculated
risks. When it comes to the
Northeast, you’ve heard: “the weather
gets so extreme there,” “the people
are different and aren’t as nice,”
“you’ll be so far from home.” I
respond: go and find out for yourself. I
was anxious about moving to Boston,
but now when people ask if I’ll return
to the Bay Area after college, I say
I’m not sure. While I adore California
and feel so lucky to have been raised
there, I have room in my heart to love
both places equally, despite their dif-
ferences.
For starters, the Northeast does get

the big cities that requires people to
be more direct, but it doesn’t take
away from their friendliness.
Additionally, diversity is very preva-
lent in my new bubble at Boston
University. As I mentioned before,
diversity was really lacking in the
first 18 years of my life. Now, I
encounter people of different races,

One of the biggest selling points of
the Northeast for me is the ability to
get around. BART and Caltrain don’t
compare to the mass transportation
over here, and San Francisco’s steep
streets are certainly not as walkable
as Boston’s relatively flat ones. The
posal “has the potential to reduce
traffic.” Show me a single monkey
without a stake in the game who
believes that hogwash. Further, my
taxpaying neighbors will be the ones
to prop up infrastructure with this
population influx.
New mayor “Greenlight Growth”
Bonilla responded to my concerns
this way: “Thanks for sharing your
thoughts. Have a nice day.” To which
I responded, “My nice day will come
when the residents in this city are
truly considered.” Our council is in
process of drawing up San Mateo’s
new General Plan, and is asking resi-
dents for input to direct them in plan-
ning for our city’s future. Let’s see if
they can’t get more than nice-day
wishes.

MBTA lines in Boston form webs that
connect almost every part of the city,
and the commuter rail can even get
you out to other parts of
Massachusetts. The Northeast, and
especially Boston, is also rich in his-
tory. You are never far from a defining
landmark for an event or person that
formed this country.
When I say that I love both places
equally, it’s really because they are
more similar than different. They
both share large populations, a
strong emphasis on education, fer-
vent political views and opinions,
powerful economic centers, love for
their sports teams, great dining and
entertainment, beautiful cities and
suburbs, and global citizenry. Yes,
there are some major differences, but
the combination of differences and
similarities is what makes both the
Bay Area and the Northeast so special
— and worth experiencing for your-
self.

Close friends
“F
riendship is the inexpressible comfort of
George Eliot.
feeling safe with a person having neither to
weigh thoughts nor measure words.” —
I was rearranging my book closet trying to make more
room for my abundant collection of reading material when
I came across a photo album of my husband’s 70th birth-
day party. As I looked over the gathering of relatives and
friends, what startled me was the number of those of our
generation who are not with us any longer. One that espe-
cially caught my attention was Bill (not his real name)
who, when I was writing columns in the ’90s, hinted off
and on that he had always had the desire to see his name in
print — like in a book or a newspaper. Apparently he was-
n’t planning to do any-
thing notorious to bring
this about, so I included his
name (the real one) in a col-
umn about friends that
appeared in the newspaper
on his birthday. After all,
what are friends for?
Bill and his wife “Betty”
lived across the Bay. He
had been a friend of my hus-
band’s when they attended
Commerce High School in
San Francisco. When our
kids were young, we visited
back and forth off and on,
but as our offspring became teens, our lives became more
hectic and, unfortunately, we saw them less. Then, when
the kids were going to college and moving out on their
own, we began traveling with Betty and Bill and enjoyed a
closer relationship. We were reminded that close friends
can add immeasurably to the satisfaction and pleasure in
our lives. It seems good friends are like compatriots who
generally agree with us philosophically and politically.
Though Bill and I had some animated, but never hostile,
debates at times, we generally shared the same values,
which is what good friendship is usually based upon.
When we get to know our friends well, we often learn
that each of us is a kind of hero, having survived many
kinds of life’s challenges and crises. Sometimes we take
comfort with each other when we hash over problems —
at times for advice — but mostly to exorcise somewhat
that oppressive cloud that our problems hold over us.
Yes, we will always be worried parents. Yes, the political
situation is a mess. Yes, getting old is the pits. No,
things don’t always work out the way we want, but we
have come through a similar situation, if that’s any con-
solation. 
Sometimes we would use our time together for escape.
Then the no-talk rule would apply. No discussion of poli-
tics, religion, diets, our kids’ problems or our ailments.
This was an attempt to distract ourselves from the previ-
ously mentioned concerns. It was time to joke, laugh,
play and hang loose — especially when we were on vaca-
tion together.
Close friendships are good for us in other ways, also. As
Joel Block wrote in his book, “Friends”: “As more is
learned about the conditions of psychological health, the
suspicion grows stronger that inability to enter into and
sustain such personal relationships with others results in
the emergence of disturbing symptoms. Investigating the
emotional factors in everything from minor backache to
cancer, the psychology of personal relationships is
increasing in importance.”
To be a really good friend, we need to be open and vul-
nerable. We must respect each other. As Block says:
“Friendship is the riskiest of all investments. It is not our
money, investments, time or convenience we are putting
on the line, it is our self, our basic humanity. Fear, there-
fore, is the basic impediment to friendship. It is saying to
those others, in effect, ‘This is me. I will not hide from
you. I will risk being hurt.’ It is an invitation to put aside
the mask.”
The friends with whom we virtually “put aside the mask”
are those to whom we become closest — with whom inti-
mate connection is possible. We can achieve this degree
of friendship if we have worked through our fears and
hang-ups that prevent openness, empathy and the giving
up of pretense. If we can achieve this mask divestment, we
will be able to achieve some truly fulfilling relationships.
They’re the ones we remember most fondly.
Let’s all make a New Year’s resolution to especially
appreciate and celebrate our good friends and possibly cul-
tivate some new ones. And we can keep in mind the fol-
lowing Arabian proverb: “ A friend is one to whom one
may pour out all the contents of one’s heart, chaff and
grain together, knowing that the gentlest of hands will
take and sift it. Keep what is worth keeping and with a
breath of kindness, blow the rest away.”

Stocks finish slightly lower after light day

Trading was light as investors
returned from the Christmas holi-
day.
“It’s a low-volume day after
Christmas, with hardly anything
going on,” said Tom Martin, sen-
ior portfolio manager with
Globalt Investments. “You have
one piece of news that is signifi-
cant on a major company, Apple.
That moved some of the compo-
nents around.”
The Standard & Poor’s 500
index fell 2.84 points, or 0.1 per-
cent, to 2,680.50. The Dow Jones
industrial average slid 7. 85

24,746.21. The Nasdaq lost 23.71

NEW YORK — Wall Street is
forecasting another year of gains
for stocks in 2018, even as worries
rise that the end may be nearing for
one of the market’s greatest runs in
history.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index
has nearly quadrupled since the dark
days of early 2009, and this bull
run of eight-plus years is well into
senior-citizen status. Only the
rally of 1990 to 2000 lasted
longer. But analysts see several
reasons this bull market isn’t ready
for retirement. Chief among them:
Economies around the world are
growing in sync.
The global gains, along with the
lower tax rates that Congress just
approved, should help companies
pile their profits even higher. That
should provide more life for the
market, analysts say, because
stock prices tend to follow the path
of corporate profits more than any-
thing else over the long term. Plus,
this week. They are on pace to fin-
ish every month this year with
gains, when dividends are includ-
ed.
The major indexes were slightly
lower early on and veered little for
the rest of the day. It was the light-
est day of trading in about a year.
Technology companies pulled
the market lower from the get-go,
weighed down by chipmakers and
Apple, among other big names.
Apple slid after a Taiwanese
newspaper reported that the com-
pany may cut iPhone X sales tar-
gets amid weak sales. The stock
declined $4.44 to $170.57.

$42.25.
Despite the slide, technology
remains the best-performing sec-

When a team finishes No. 1 in Northern
California, so too come the accolades.
The College of San Mateo Bulldogs earned
five football California Community
College Athletic Association All-American
honors, it was announced Tuesday. Three
defensive selections headline the list in
sophomore defensive tackle Tevita Musika;
sophomore linebacker Colt Doughty; and
freshman cornerback Jamarri Jackson.
Freshman wide receiver Rajae Johnson
was the lone selection from the offense. The
6-4, 215-pounder hailing from St. Louis led
the CCCAA with 1,385 receiving yards on
the season. Sophomore punter Justin Watts,
a Division I kickback from University of
Mississippi, rounds out the list.
It’s fitting CSM earned three defensive
honors after a tremendous effort in the
CCCAA championship game. Despite the
Bulldogs’ 16-12 loss to Fullerton on Dec. 9
at Sacramento City College — two weeks
after Fullerton defeated Riverside in the
Southern California championship game
75-16 — the CSM defense held Fullerton to
343 total yards of offense.
While the Bulldogs defense technically
allowed two touchdowns, Fullerton’s game-
winning score — a short TD run with 51 sec-
onds remaining in regulation — was set up
by a 59-yard punt return to the CSM 1-yard
line.
“It was a tough one as a coach,” CSM
defensive coordinator Tim Tulloch said.
“You’re so proud of the way the guys played
and you wanted it so bad for them. It was just
a tough one.”
Jackson and the rest of the CSM second-
ary were a big reason for the dramatic finish.
The Bulldogs secondary went on lockdown
in the fourth quarter, breaking up a string of
accurate passes to keep a late lead in check.

“When you have a whole team of guys that
have been with the coaching staff, it’s real-
ly satisfying to see what they accomplished
as a group,” Monken said. “This means a lot
to our team.”
In this day of pass-happy offenses,
Monken has accomplished the unthinkable
with his option attack — his Black Knights
have been winning regularly by pretty much
sticking to the ground and not committing
turnovers. Army had only five fumbles in
more than 800 plays — 785 rushes, 20
receptions — in 2017, a remarkable statis-
tic, while attempting just 65 passes.
A win by the Boilermakers (6-6) over the
Wildcats (7-5) would give Purdue a winning
record for the first time since 2011 and its
first bowl victory over a major conference
team since beating Washington in the 2002
Sun Bowl.
“It would be huge for our program and our
guys, ” Brohm said. “We made some
progress this year. It’s meant a lot to them.
It’s been a while since we’ve been in this
environment. To be able to extend the sea-
son was huge for us.”
Brohm didn’t know quite what to expect
Three of Army’s victories were achieved
without completing a pass, the most signif-
icant a 21-0 triumph on the road against
service academy nemesis Air Force . Against
archrival Navy, Army attempted to throw
just once in a riveting 14-13 victory over
the Midshipmen .
The Black Knights won eight of their
final nine games, but there are big holes to
fill on both sides of the ball.
Chief among them is the key to the
offense — quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw.
The Black Knights scored 42 touchdowns
on 51 trips into the red zone, and Bradshaw
was the catalyst, rushing for an academy
single-season record 1,746 yards and scor-
ing 14 TDs.
Army also loses Josh Boylan, Mike
Houghton, Bryce Holland and Brent Toth,
who started on the offensive line for 12
straight weeks and helped create the seams
and holes for a team that averaged 362.3
yards per game and six yards per carry. But
four fullbacks who combined for 1,871
yards rushing — Darnell Woolfolk, Andy
Davidson, Connor Slomka and Calen Holt
from his team as it struggled in summer
practices, but he was encouraged after the
team proved to be competitive in a season-
opening loss to Louisville. The
Boilermakers then bounced back from three
straight losses by eight or fewer points
midway through the season to close strong
with three wins in four games.
The highlight of that stretch was a 24-15
win at then-No. 25 Iowa that set the stage
for Purdue to become bowl eligible by beat-
ing rival Indiana in the regular-season
finale.

“Since coach Monken got there, he’s
turned it around,” Niumatalolo said. “You
can just see the program elevating, and he’s
taking them to a new level.”
Purdue will get another tough test in the
bowl game against dynamic quarterback
Khalil Tate and the Wildcats. Tate rushed for
1,353 yards and 12 touchdowns and passed
for 1,289 yards and nine TDs after taking
over the team early in the fifth game of the
season, which was against Colorado.
“He can make all the throws,” coach Rich
Rodriguez said. “He’s a dynamic runner and
he’s a big strong guy. He has as good a
throwing motion, arm and touch as any
quarterback I’ve had. But we can do more
with our offense.”

Arians denies report he’s
leaving Cardinals as ’fake news’
TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals coach
Bruce Arians says a report that he and the
franchise have agreed to part ways after this
season is untrue, labeling it “fake news.”
An article in Pro Football Weekly cited
“multiple sources” as saying the split would
come next week at the end of Arians’ fifth
season as the team’s head coach.
But Arians said on Tuesday that no deci-
sion on future seasons has been made. The
65-year-old coach said he’d never met the
article’s author or knows where any sup-
posed meetings on the subject took place.
Arians can become the winningest coach
in Cardinals history with his 50th victory
at Seattle in the season finale on Sunday.
Arians is 49-32-1 in five seasons with
the Cardinals, including the postseason.
They are 7-8 this season.
Jerry Jones: Jason Garrett
to return as Cowboys coach in ’18
DALLAS — Cowboys owner Jerry Jones
says coach Jason Garrett will return for an
eighth full season after Dallas missed the
playoffs in a year marred by the six-game sus-
pension of star running back Ezekiel Elliott.
Jones said on his radio show Tuesday that
Garrett’s job “is not an issue here at all” while
suggesting that there could be changes to the
coaching staff with several contracts expir-
ing. Garrett has two years left on a five-year
deal signed after Dallas won the NFC East in
2014.
The Cowboys (8-7), who finish the season
Sunday at division champion Philadelphia,
lost their first three games without Elliott
before winning three straight to stay in the
race. Dallas lost a playoff elimination game
to Seattle last weekend in the return of last
year’s NFL rushing leader.
Garrett has made the playoffs twice in seven
seasons. He is 67-55 including the postsea-
son and half the 2010 season, when he took
over after Wade Phillips was fired.

Sabathia finalizes $10M deal with Yanks

NEW YORK — CC Sabathia’s $10 million,
one-year contract has been finalized by the
Yankees, a deal that raises New York’s project-
ed luxury tax payroll for next year to about
$178 million.
The deal was announced Tuesday, about 10
days after the sides reached an agreement
pending a physical. The 37-year-old left-han-
der is taking a pay cut from the $25 million he
earned this year, when he went 14-5 with a
3.69 ERA in 27 starts for his best season
since 2012. He was 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 10
starts following a Yankees loss.
Sabathia needs periodic injections in his
surgically repaired right knee. The six-time
All-Star is part of a rotation that includes Luis
Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray and
Jordan Montgomery.
Sabathia is 237-146 with a 3.70 ERA and
2,846 strikeouts in 17 big league seasons

bound Shohei Ohtani bid farewell to fans of
his former Japanese club on Monday as he
sets off to join his new Major League
Baseball team.
The star pitcher and hitter wore an Angels
jersey to his news conference. He opened
with an introduction in English, saying:
“Long time, no see. I’m Shohei Ohtani.
Welcome to my press conference. Please
enjoy.” The Sapporo Dome crowd erupted in
laughter and applause.
For five seasons, Ohtani called Sapporo
home, playing for the Nippon Ham

arbitration whose projected salaries total $30

Japanese media reports last week showed
Ohtani taking batting practice and throw-
ing long toss.
The Angels have said they are not con-
cerned and they expect Ohtani to be ready
for spring training.
A 32-year-old right-hander, Hughes went
5-3 with a 3.02 ERA for Milwaukee last sea-
son with one save in 67 appearances. He
became a free agent when the Brewers failed
to offer a 2018 contract by the Dec. 1 dead-
line.
Cincinnati hopes Hughes will provide
help getting leads to closer Raisel Iglesias,
who had 28 saves in 30 chances last season.

Toronto Maple Leaf great Johnny Bower dies at age 93

TORONTO — Johnny Bower didn’t even
want to come to Toronto. Yet the pint-sized
goalie with the big heart became a part of
Maple Leafs lore.
Bower, a beloved two-time Vezina Trophy
winner who helped the Leafs win their last
Stanley Cup in 1967, died on Tuesday. He
was 93.
His family said in a statement that the Hall
of Famer died after a short battle with pneu-
monia.
Bower was a two-time Vezina Trophy win-
ner who became known as the China Wall.
His career took off after the Leafs claimed
him in an intra-league draft in 1958, and he
played 475 regular-season games and won
four Stanley Cups for the Leafs before play-
ing his final game as a 45-year-old in 1969.
“He was an inspiration to us,” said George
Armstrong, who captained the Leafs’ last
championship team. “He shamed others into

play over the middle, reaching a hand in to
slap a pass away. Fullerton attempted a 36-
yard field goal on the ensuing fourth down,
but missed wide right.

“Those guys, they just executed,” Tulloch
said. “You could see it in their eyes on

Jackson, a freshman out of Christian
Brothers in Sacramento, is the younger
cousin of Kevin Powers, a former Bulldogs
defensive back. Jackson led the Bay 6
Conference with six interceptions this sea-
son, including the first two of his career Sept.
16 in a 21-19 win at Fresno City, including a
56-yard return for a pick-6.
“He’s just a kid in high pressure situations,
he played his best,” Tulloch said.

with the minor league Cleveland Barons in
his 30s when Toronto acquired him. He said
he only showed up to avoid being suspended.
“They just wanted me for one year, but I had
a good team in front of me,” Bower recalled
with a laugh in 2014. “I was there for 13
years, so it turned out really nice for me.”
The 5-foot-9 Bower won the Vezina Trophy
in 1961 and shared it with teammate Terry
Sawchuk in 1965. The Leafs hoisted the Cup
in 1962, ‘63, ‘64 and ‘67, and Bower

sive tackle, Musika’s most impressive skill
might be his open-field speed, which Tulloch
compared to Cleveland Browns DT Danny
Shelton.
“He’s grown up around football and has that
Dan Shelton build,” Tulloch said. “He’s very
athletic for a kid who is 340 pounds.”
Doughty, 6-2, 240-pounder who started
every game in his two years at CSM, was one
of five early transfer commits to Division I
programs for the Bulldogs this season.
Doughty transfers in January to his dream
school at Cal.
Freshman offensive lineman Mike Grandy
(University of Texas), sophomore receiver
remained a standout into his 40s despite
near-sightedness and painful arthritis.
Bower pioneered the poke-check, brazenly
diving head first at opposing players to
knock the puck off their sticks. The move
came with a cost —the mask-less goalie suf-
fered cuts and lost teeth by throwing himself
into the action.
“I got a couple hundred stitches in the
face,” he said during a 2005 interview.
Bower was the only boy among nine chil-
dren in a family raised in rural Saskatchewan.
He made his first goalie pads from an old mat-
tress, but put his hockey career on hold when
he lied about his age in 1940 to fight in
World War II. He told authorities that his
birth certificate had burned in a fire, allowing
him to enlist at 16 years old. He was sta-
tioned in England but did not see action dur-
ing the war because of his arthritis.
“It’s a good thing I didn’t because the
Germans were right there waiting,” he said.
“A lot of guys there were killed on the beach-
Line Latu (Eastern Michigan), and sopho-
mores Tukua Ahoia and Thomas Toki
(Arkansas State) were the other Bulldogs to
ink in the early signing period. None of the
five had college offers out of high school,
according to Tulloch.
Tulloch concurred Doughty is one of the
greatest linebackers to ever play at CSM.
“He is, there’s no question,” Tulloch said.
“What you love is when you see guys earn all
the accolades. Those are the things that show
up in the stat book … but no one sees the
countless hours of film prep and the hours on

es. I know four or five good hockey players
from Prince Albert who were killed. They
never came back.”
Upon his return, he played junior hockey
with his hometown Prince Albert Black
Hawks before turning pro with the Barons in
1945. He played eight seasons in the
American Hockey League before joining the
NHL’s New York Rangers in 1953. He had a
sour experience with the Rangers and ended
up back with Cleveland until being selected
by Toronto.
Bower wanted to remain in the AHL, but he
agreed to show up when Cleveland general
manager James Hendy ensured him the
Barons would take him back if Toronto didn’t
work out.
He never returned, instead becoming a fix-
ture for one of the league’s most storied fran-
chises. Bower was inducted into the Hockey
Hall of Fame in 1976. Toronto paid tribute to
him with a commemorative banner in 1995,
and Cleveland retired his No. 1 in 2002.

“It’s a really great history of women swimmers and
freestylers,” Ledecky said of the AP honor roll. “I really
look up to a lot of those women.”
She is the first active college athlete to win since UConn
basketball player Rebecca Lobo in 1995.
Ledecky is a sophomore at Stanford, still debating
whether to major in psychology or political science, and
enjoying life in the dorms, where she lives with five other
swimmers.
“Just being in the college environment has kind of added
another layer of fun,” she said. “Being with teammates and
working toward NCAA championships and having that team
goal, that’s another thing that is fun.”
Ledecky heads to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for high-
altitude training with her Stanford team this week. Her focus
is on the collegiate season through the NCAAs in March.
In moving cross-country from her home in Bethesda,
Maryland, to attend college in California, Ledecky left
behind longtime coach Bruce Gemmell. But like some of
those old summer league teammates, Ledecky has stayed in
touch. She trains with Gemmell when she returns to visit
her family.
She was a star to them in 2012 but a little-known 15-year-
old to the rest of the world when she won the 800-meter
freestyle in American-record time in London.
In 2013, Ledecky won four golds at the worlds in
Barcelona, setting a pair of world records. Two years later in
Kazan, she swept every freestyle from 200 to 1,500 meters,

In her typically understated way, Ledecky said: “I really
pride myself on the consistency I’ve had over the past cou-
ple years. Just being able to compete at the international
level and come away with some gold medals each year.”
Ledecky didn’t set any personal bests or world records in
Budapest, something she’s done with such frequency that
people expect to witness something spectacular anytime
she dives in the pool.
Her loss in the 200 free in Hungary was considered an
upset.
“If they’re disappointed with me not breaking a world
record, it’s an honor because it’s representative of what I’ve
done in the past and a benchmark for myself,” she said. “I
don’t focus on what anyone thinks of my goals or wants to
see me do.”
Not yet halfway toward the 2020 Tokyo Games, Ledecky
already is thinking ahead. Like Phelps, she never publicly
reveals her target times or placements.
“I set big goals for myself and that’s always what has
motivated me,” she said.
Despite living in a results-focused world, Ledecky enjoys
the journey, something she learned between London and
Rio.
“Trying to find those little things to improve on and the
process of getting better,” she said. “Doing everything in
practice to set yourself up well each year.”
Her sunny smile and friendly demeanor belie the competi-
tor who is always plotting ahead and moving forward ever
faster.
“I know the four years goes by very quickly,” Ledecky
said, “and I want to do everything I can to prepare.”

“But, I haven’t seen him yet. But, definitely that’s not
something that we want, because I don’t believe that’s the
way you should think. You can’t control what’s going on
next year. You only can worry about right now.”
Ending the season on a streak such as this and falling
short of the playoffs is rare. The 49ers could become the
41st team in the past 23 seasons to win their final five games
but only the 2005 Miami Dolphins missed the postseason
in that group.
Whether there’s a big carry-over effect remains to be seen.
Nearly half of those teams — 19 of 40 — missed the play-
offs the following year whether it was because of quarterback
injuries that doomed teams such as Green Bay this season,
New England in 2008 or Washington in 2013, or natural
regression that impacted other teams, finishing strong is no
guarantee of future success.
“It depends on the people you have and how they show up
ready to go,” Shanahan said. “If you end the season on a real
positive note and you’ve got a group of guys that like read-
ing their own press clippings and feeling good about them-
selves so they can relax, then that type of stuff will hurt you.
“If you have guys who aren’t fazed by whether people say
good things or bad things about you, it doesn’t matter. You
just work as hard as you can and do as good as you can every
single day, then I think we’ll be all right. We feel good about
where things are ending right now.”
The mood is far different than it was when the season start-
ed. The 49ers struggled mightily early in the season, includ-
ing a record five straight losses by three points or fewer.
But sticking together through that process has paid divi-
dends now, according to Shanahan.
“It was hard when we went through it, but the fact that we
were able to get through it and still find a way to get some
wins here recently, I think it made our team stronger,” he
said.
“When you go through some really hard things with each
other and you make it through there, I feel you get stronger
from that stuff. I think our team has gotten tighter through
it, they’ve gotten stronger, and that’s led to us starting to
win a few games and having more confidence. I believe our
team feels that they are tough enough mentally to get
through anything.”

Korean grain bowl is built on healthy, filling ingredients

Every New Year, lots of us resolve to lose weight. And

every year, lots of us fail. The problem? We go from eating
too much food, much of it unhealthy, to eating very little of
anything. But after starving ourselves for a while, many of
us return to our old habits and regain the weight.
This recipe for a Korean Grain Bowl is built on healthy,
filling ingredients — whole grains and vegetable protein
— and some good fat. It’s a middle ground between empty
calories and self-starvation. In Korea, this traditional rice
dish is called bibimbap. Usually it consists of white rice
topped with meat, vegetables, a raw or cooked egg, a soy-
based sauce and some chili paste — all of it tossed together
right before eating. My version swaps in a few healthier
ingredients and increases the amount of veggies.
Instead of white rice, use your favorite whole grain, such
as brown rice, wheat berries or quinoa. Instead of meat, use
tofu, a protein-rich bean curd that can be prepared to feature
a satisfyingly “meaty” texture. Start with firm tofu, cut it
into planks 1/3-inch thick, and weigh it down between
paper towels for 20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
Miso sesame sauce, an all-purpose sauce for many items
like sauteed fish and raw vegetables, makes this dish even
more substantial. I encourage you to prepare your own, but
if you don’t have time, just drizzle your bowl with low-sodi-
um soy sauce.
The vegetables specified here — carrots, shiitakes and
spinach — could be replaced with vegetables of your
choice. Just be sure to pick from different-colored vegetable
groups, which will deliver both nutritional and visual ben-

for seniors, supplement a fixed income.

said its resources are open to anyone in need
of an extra boost to get ready for their next
step. But for most clients, Thompson has
seen a path toward success form when they
are able to take advantage of multiple
resources the center offers.
“We try to get people to use multiple serv-
ices because we know that that’s the way
that we see the most …. long-term success,
but we don’t put requirements on anyone,”
he said.
Thompson said the college organized
resources it was already offering to the com-
munity and added new ones in 2011 under
the SparkPoint Center model, an initiative
launched by United Way Bay Area. Though
he’s seen the model help hundreds of clients
advance their careers, he acknowledged the
rising cost of housing and other expenses
in the region has posed a mounting chal-
lenge for clients, many of whom he said are
sharing living quarters with several family
members to make rent payments or living
in a series of temporary housing situations
to be able to stay in the area.
“What previously may have been a liv-
able wage job is no longer a livable wage
job,” he said. “They could be full-time
[workers], but the job they have is not
enough to live in this area.”

Kathleen Velasquez, program services
coordinator with the NOVA Job Center, said
the expansion of the nonprofit employ-
ment and training agency’s services to the
northern portion of the county is aimed at
meeting the unique needs of the county’s
workforce. By teaming up with resources
already based at Skyline College, Velasquez
is hopeful about seeing in action a new
model of working with clients — one that is
sensitive to the many challenges they may
be facing.
For Skyline College student Marjourie
Quintanilla, having access to SparkPoint
Center resources has made it easier for her to
focus on her studies. She now works with
clients in the center’s public benefits office
to navigate the application process for
resources like Medi-Cal or CalFresh. She
said many of the clients she works with
have never applied for public benefits
class that people have paid for.
Edible products must be produced in serving
sizes with no more than 10 milligrams of
THC and no more than 100 milligrams of
THC for the total package.
Drug policy expert and Stanford Law
School professor Robert J. MacCoun said the
regulations are too lax. Edibles already being
sold in the medical marijuana industry vary
widely in their potency, so people get more
stoned than they planned and can end up in
emergency rooms. The bright packages
appeal to children, who often are too young
to read warning labels, MacCoun said. He
thinks edibles should be restricted to plain
brown or white packaging.
“Everyone sees this as a kind of new gold
rush in the way that it will make a lot of
money, but I think we need to be more careful

“They’re kind of like surprised and
amazed,” she said. “I tell people [about the

just grab them!”
But together with the career resources
offered at the NOVA Job Center, staff can
maintain a dual focus on working with
clients on housing and food resources as
well as job search strategies to help them
earn more for their skills. Velasquez empha-
sized that helping clients earn the degrees,
certificates or training they need to obtain
higher-paying jobs and boost their incomes
can also help alleviate the pressure of rising
costs in the long term.
“Because income’s very heavily relevant
to the housing options people can access …

really helps them expand their housing
options in the area,” she said.

Founder Alex Howe is planning high-end
dinner parties in Los Angeles in early 2018 to
debut the $59.99 bottle of wine. Each bottle
contains 16 milligrams of THC, and the com-
pany says on average, people feel the effects
in under 15 minutes.

libraries Redwood City operates by major
thoroughfares such as Woodside Road,
Wolfgram said the Fair Oaks Branch
Library has become a gathering space for
seniors, students and residents of all ages
hoping to learn, play and participate in
activities.
“There’s really limited space for that
now,” he said. “Being able to deliver those
services right in the neighborhood would
make a difference.”
Moving staff offices currently located
behind the long, rectangular space into a
conference room previously operated by
the county’s Human Services Agency, with
whom the library shares a building, will
make way for much-needed resources such
as a dedicated space for teens, said
Wolfgram.
He said a new play area designed for
young children learning how to read and
the addition of an interactive wall with a
farmers’ market truck design are also
expected to bring the resources offered at
this library in line with those offered at
other branches, such as the Redwood
Shores library.
But the most important change expected
with the new library, Wolfgram said, would
be the ability to move furniture and
shelves around to accommodate the vari-
ety of programming patrons have come to
expect at the library.

For Redwood City resident Nipun Jethi,
trips to the library are part of the routine
he and his 4-year-old daughter Nya have
developed. Between the dance classes she
takes at Redwood City’s downtown library
and their weekly trips to the Fair Oaks
Branch Library to choose books to read,
Jethi said their schedule in the hours when
she’s not at her half-day preschool are
packed.
“The library resources are kind of criti-
cal for the kids,” he said. “That’s really
what makes her schedule.”
For San Mateo County Supervisor
Warren Slocum, working with partners
like Wolfgram to provide services for the
North Fair Oaks residents in his district as
well as Redwood City residents has been a
successful model. Slocum, who is married
to Maria Diaz-Slocum, noted that many
students who live nearby come to the
library as a safe space after school.
“Many, many people from that commu-
nity use that library … it’s more like a
community center in some ways,” he said.
Diaz-Slocum said the library can become
noisy when students fill the seats at the
computers after school, and that the

library is able to loan mobile devices to
them to help them with their studies. She
said she is looking forward to offering a
dedicated space where teens can play
games or work on homework assign-
ments, and said improvements to the tech-
nological resources available to them will
better meet their needs as well.
“It’s where we need to go because every-
thing’s digital,” she said.
Wolfgram said the city is contributing
$141,000 toward the improvements with
contributions from the Latino Community
Council of Redwood City, Kaiser
Permanente and the Palo Alto Medical
Foundation. Deputy County Manager
Peggy Jensen said $500,000 in Measure K
funds would be requested for the project at
the San Mateo County Board of
Supervisors’ Jan. 9 meeting.
Though Wolfgram and Slocum expressed
interest in creating a new facility for the
branch someday, they have yet to identify
the funding sources and land for such a
project.
Wolfgram said the library would be
closed for three to four months once con-
struction begins in late February or early
March, and that a smaller space in the Fair
Oaks Community Center at 2600
Middlefield Road would hold some of the
library’s more popular items and be avail-
able for activities in the interim.

coming weeks once the second level of
parking is complete.
Approved by the City Council in 2015,
the proposal to redevelop the downtown
lots first came before the council nearly
20 years ago. Expected to provide 10,000
square feet of ground-floor retail facing
San Carlos Avenue and new downtown
housing, the project had previously been a
cause of concern for downtown visitors
when a 185-spot lot between the business-
es lining Laurel Street, Walnut Street and
San Carlos Avenue went offline during
construction.
But the some 50 spots officials made
available at a temporary parking lot at
616 Laurel St. where the Foodville store
stood as well as additional spots made
available to the public at the SamTrans
parking garage at 1250 San Carlos Ave.

say have alleviated shortage of downtown
spots while the project takes shape.
Though Community Development
Director Al Savay said officials had heard
from a few individuals about the valet-
assist lot on Laurel Street when it opened
earlier this year, he said Impark employ-
ees attending the Laurel Street lot have
been coordinating with local businesses
and drivers to keep cars moving through
the area.
“Despite a couple of bumps in the road,
things smoothed out pretty well,” he said.
City planner Lisa Costa Sanders said the
Laurel Street lot is expected to become an
urban plaza when the project is complete.
With the 252-space parking garage
included in the project — which
LeMessurier said could be available for use
by downtown visitors as early as the
spring of 2018 — and other minor
changes aimed at freeing up downtown
spots for visitors, Savay said officials
have developed several strategies for eas-
ing the challenge of construction for visi-
tors and business owners. He said convert-
ing the Clark Plaza parking lot at 1245
Cherry St. from permit to public parking
and making a new lot available for down-
town employees and construction workers
east of El Camino Real between Arroyo
Avenue and Morse Boulevard are among
the other changes that have freed up spots.
He said updates posted on the project’s
Facebook page and through email have
helped visitors plan ahead when concrete
pours and other construction activities
have affected traffic on streets and side-
walks near the project, and expected those
updates to continue as construction pro-
gresses.
“What we’ve tried to do is notify the res-
idents in advance of these things occur-
ring,” he said. “As a result of that, people
know what’s going to happen so they’re
less surprised.”
LeMessurier said the developer is target-
ing spring of 2019 to complete the project
and that more information for those inter-
ested in buying a home would be available
before the grand opening.

choice
Kimchi for garnish (optional)
Make the sauce: In a blender com-
bine all of the ingredients with 1 table-
spoon water and blend until smooth.
Set aside.
Prepare the grain bowl: Cook the
rice, wheat berries or whole grain of
your choice such as quinoa following
the package directions (you should
have about 3 cups); keep warm. Slice
the tofu into planks 1/3-inch thick.
Place the planks between paper towels
on a plate, top the plate with another
plate and a weight, such as several cans
of tomatoes, and set aside for 20 min-
utes.
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. In
a large nonstick skillet heat 1 table-
spoon of the oil over medium heat. Add
the carrots, season them with salt and
pepper to taste, and cook, stirring,
until they are crisp-tender, about 2
minutes. Transfer them to a rimmed
baking sheet.
Add another 1 1/2 tablespoons oil to
the skillet. Add the mushrooms and a
pinch of salt and cook, stirring occa-
sionally, just until tender, about 4
minutes. Add the spinach and another
pinch of salt to the mushrooms and
cook, stirring, just until wilted, about
3 minutes. Transfer the mixture to the
baking sheet with the carrots.
Cut the tofu planks in half and pat
the pieces dry. Heat another 1/2 table-
spoon of oil in the skillet over medi-
um-high heat; add the tofu. Cook until
golden brown, about 3 minutes a side.
Transfer the tofu to the baking sheet
and put the baking sheet of ingredients
in the oven to keep warm while you fry
the eggs.
Heat the remaining tablespoon of
oil in the skillet over medium heat, add
the eggs and fry until cooked to the
desired degree of doneness.
To serve, mound 3/4 cup of hot grain
into the center of each of 4 shallow
bowls. Arrange one-fourth of the tofu
on top along with one egg and one-
fourth of the carrots and the spinach
mixture. Sprinkle the scallions and
sesame seeds over the top and drizzle
with the miso sesame sauce and hot
sauce. Serve with the kimchi on the
side.

The initiative grows as it steps into
its second year through a collabora-
tion with YouTube, which contributed
$100,000 to the grant fund — expand-
ing its potency and impact, said foun-
dation Executive Director Leslie
Hatamiya.
“They saw it as a way to give back to
the community,” said Hatamiya, of the
video streaming titan’s participation.
“Rather than creating their own proj-
ect, they could piggyback on some of
the things we were doing and that
would allow us to support more organ-
izations than we could with the founda-
tion’s money.”
With the contribution from YouTube
and Google.org, the charitable arm of
video streaming company’s parent
organization Alphabet, the founda-
tion’s grant program grew by
$100,000 and nine recipients from the
$200,000 shared between 14 organiza-
tions last year.
The grants range in value from about
$1,600 to install a bike fix-it station
at the city’s BART stop to $20,000 for
housing support service Project
Sentinel.
Jaqueline Ramirez, a county program
manager and senior housing advocate
for Project Sentinel, said the money
will go far to advance the nonprofit’s
work amidst the city’s changing hous-
ing landscape.
“This money is going to be really
helpful in targeting our efforts in San
Bruno,” she said.
Project Sentinel offers services such
as housing dispute resolution, renter
and landlord legal education courses,
housing discrimination investigation
and other similar programs throughout
San Mateo County.
Ramirez said considering San
Bruno’s relative affordability com-
pared to neighboring communities, it
is reasonable to expect coming wave
of demographic transition, which
could invite an uptick in the nonprof-

A San Bruno resident, Ramirez said
she has a front-row seat to that transi-
tion taking hold.
“I have seen the change already and I
see it continuing,” she said, pointing
to a slate of development interest
rolling into San Bruno over the past
few years.
With the grant money, Ramirez said
Project Sentinel will primarily boost
its outreach efforts in San Bruno to
help build awareness among residents
regarding the service.
Illustrating the likelihood a grant
applicant can effectively implement
the programs to be funded by the foun-
dation’s funding is an essential part of
the vetting and approval process, said
Hatamiya.
Regarding the partnership with
Project Sentinel, Hatamiya said the
foundation is pleased to finance efforts
seeking to mitigate the affordability
crisis generated by the local housing
crunch.
“Housing is such a significant issue
on the Peninsula right now, but the
foundation is not set up to build afford-
able housing or help in that way, so we
are grateful for the chance to help
through programs like Project
Sentinel,” Hatamiya said.
The foundation also awarded grants
to housing support organizations such
as Society of St. Vincent de Paul of San
Mateo County and the Catholic Worker
Hospitality House. St. Vincent de Paul
of San Mateo County received a grant
last year, but the other two housing
support groups were awarded money
for the first time.

growing the reach of the foundation’s
grant program to new recipients, she
also enjoyed the opportunity to con-
tinue supporting programs which
received an initial round of financing
in the initiative’s inaugural year.
One such example is $5,000 to the
Via Heart Project, addressing heart
safety at Parkside Intermediate School
in San Bruno. Last year, the foundation
granted $15,000 to the program to
purchase and install AED machines as
well as CPR training to provide care in
case of an emergency.
Hatamiya said the larger initial
investment helped get the program off
the ground, and the following, smaller
contribution is paying toward its con-
tinuing operation.
“We are building on last year’s
grant,” she said.
Under terms of the initiative, pro-
grams may seek three sequential years
of funding for a specific program. In
the fourth year, an organization can
submit another grant application, but
the money must go to another service.
“These are good programs we want to
be open to funding, but we don’t want
them to be completely dependent on
us,” she said.
The foundation started the grant pro-
gram along with a variety of other ini-
tiatives to allocate the nearly $70 mil-
lion paid by Pacific Gas and Electric
following the gas pipeline explosion
which devastated the Crestmoor neigh-
borhood in 2010.
The grant program is the second
round of efforts between YouTube and
the foundation this year, as the two
recently partnered on a variety of
pedestrian safety infrastructure
improvements near local school cam-
puses.
Looking ahead, Hatamiya said she is
enthusiastic to see the grant program
take hold and improve a variety of
social programs in San Bruno.
“We really love this program and our
ability to share the restitution funds
with local organizations doing great
work in our community,” she said. “I
think it’s a wonderful and worthwhile
use of the restitution funds and a pro-
gram we hope to carry on for years.”
