1. Introduction

The F6 Multiple Amplifier Configurator (FMAC) application allows users to

configure and enable one or more of Doble’s F6350, F6350e, F6300 or F6300e
instruments. It is intended to be used in conjunction with large power system
simulator software to test complex protection systems. The application allows
the user to specify a list of Doble instruments to be used in a test, along with
their individual source and battery configurations, and then save the collection
to be reused at a later time.
This software differs from other Doble software for the F-series of instruments
in two important respects. First, it will work with up to 16 instruments
concurrently. The other products control one instrument at a time. Second, it
configures and enables the instruments and makes them available to the
simulation software to control during the tests.
In Version 5.0 of the FMAC, two methods are available for simulation
software to control the voltage and current sources. They may be driven by
voltage signals inserted into the Low Level Sources connector, or they may be
driven by a stream of Sampled Values sent over an Ethernet connection.
Once a collection of instruments is identified on the main screen, individual
instruments can be configured. For each configured F6350 or F6350e, both
individual sources as well as the battery level and on/off state can be set. For
configured F6300e instruments, the sources and the battery can be configured,
whereas with F6300s, only the individual sources can be set, because the
F6300 has no battery simulator.
Given an instrument’s address, either a com port name or an Ethernet IP
address, the application can automatically detect its type, i.e., F6350 or F6300,
firmware version, and CPU ID, and whether the instrument has enhanced
amplifiers. When Enhanced Rating amplifiers are detected, the instrument will
be identified as an F6350e or an F6300e. The CPU ID is used as the identifier
for the instrument.

What’s New with Version 5.0

V. 5.0 contains expanded source and range options(Chapter 6) and controls for
the Battery Simulators, which are now available on the F6300e and all F6350
models. V. 5.0 also has the capability of recognizing the presence of Enhanced
Rating Amplifiers and to display the correct ranges that are available for the
amplifiers that are present.
There is also a new capability to specify that the amplifiers will be driven by a
stream of Sampled Value (SV) signals sent over Ethernet. See Figure 1 for an
example for the setup of one such configuration.
See Chapter 8, “Playing Back of Sampled Value Signals.” for the details of
setting up and using SV sources.

F6 Multiple Amplifier Configurator User Guide

Typical Use-Case
A typical use-case for the F6 Multiple Amplifier Configurator application is
described below.
1. Create the instrument list to be used in the test via the following methods:
a. Discover (via the Discover Instruments button) all F6350 and
F6300 instruments accessible to the computer hosting the application.
Both the computer’s serial ports and Ethernet connections are polled.
In the case of Ethernet, the discovery operation is restricted to the
local sub-network to which the computer is connected.
b. Restore a previously saved list of instruments with their respective
configurations.
c. Manually configure (additional) instruments accessible to the
computer either via a serial port or Ethernet connection. Note that in
this case the instrument may reside outside the local Ethernet
sub-network to which the computer is connected but the network must
provide for its accessibility.
2. Select the features of the instruments (such as sources and/or batteries) to
be used in the test.
3. Select whether the sources will be driven by Low Level Source signals (by
checking Select Sources) or by SV playback by checking the box in the
SV Playback column.
4. Verify the instrument list (via the Verify Instruments button) to ensure
that all are accessible and operational for the test.
5. Begin the test via the Configure and Enable all Instruments and
Configure and Enable all Batteries buttons. At this point a power
system simulator application may begin to control the F6350 or F6300
instruments and perform its tests.
6. End the test via the Disable all Instruments and Disable all Batteries
buttons.
Note that any fatal communication errors encountered during the test will
result in all instrument sources and batteries being immediately disabled.
Non-fatal errors, such as occasionally missing some samples or clipping some
outputs, will be noted on the VFD of the instrument and in the Messages area
of the Main window.

2. Building an Instrument List

The user can use either the Discover Instruments button, to dynamically
build a new instrument list, or open a previously-saved configuration to
pre-populate the main screen with an instrument list.

Discover Available Instruments

Users can press Discover in the F6 Multiple Amplifier Configurator to detect
available instruments on either Ethernet or the serial ports of the computer that
is running the application. However, to detect an instrument on the Ethernet,
both the computer and the instruments have to be on the same subnet.
Instruments must be powered on in order to be detected through either a COM
port or the Ethernet network.
To use an instrument in the test that is on a different subnet than the host
computer, the user can manually enter its IP address using the procedure in
“Manually Entering an Instrument” on page 11. In this case, the network must
provide for the accessibility to the instrument.
To initiate the discovery process, the user clicks on the Discover Instruments
button, which brings up the Discover Instruments pop up screen (Figure 3 on
page 8). This Discovery dialog box will update the screen with results of the
detection process. Once the operation is completed, the user can then choose
to select all or individual instruments discovered, and press OK to bring them
into the main screen on the Instruments table. Note that the discovery and
selection process can result in duplicate entries in the main table, if the
instrument list was pre-populated before the discovery operation. In FMAC
Version 5.0, the Discovery dialog box will indicate whether the instrument is
configured for SV playback, with a TRUE entry in the SV playback column.
This feature is enabled by an entry in the F63xx instrument’s embedded web
page, as described in Chapter 8.

the instrument is enabled.

Figure 17 Source Details Table for an SV Configuration

The Column names and definitions for the Source Details table are:
Src – Name of the source channel. The first letter denotes the type of source.
A Voltage source is represented by V, a current source is represented by I and a
transient current source is represented by T.
Ranges – Set the maximum Voltage or Current levels that can be produced by
the amplifier for that channel from a drop-down. The selections displayed are
based on which preset configuration was chosen in the main table.
Enable – Check box to specify whether this source channel will be turned ON
when the CONFIGURE AND ENABLE ALL INSTRUMENTS button is
clicked. (For this to happen, the select sources check box in the Instruments

Battery Level Setup

The F6350, F6350e and F6300e support a DC Battery Simulator. Depending
on the instrument version, you can either select from four preset voltage levels
or fill in any voltage within a permitted range. Older versions of the F6350
only support preset voltage levels of 0V, 48V, 125V, or 250V. Newer versions
support both the older preset levels as well as user-specified amplitude as an
integer value in the range of 6 to 300 V. The software interrogates the
instrument to find out what it supports and presents only the appropriate
options to the user.
Only those instruments whose Battery Simulator is selected will be set with
the requested level. Otherwise the battery simulator will be turned off. The
Battery Simulator can be selected by using the Select Batteries check-box in
the User Interface associated with the battery.
Checking the Select Batteries box in the instrument in the Instrument table
will bring up the corresponding Battery Simulator Details control, shown in
Figure 18.

5. Verifying Instrument Readiness

Using the VerifyInstruments Operation

At any time, you can verify the current instrument list by using the Verify
Instruments button. See Figure 2 on page 5 for its location. This operation
polls each instrument in the Instrument table to gather its product type,
firmware version, and CPU ID, and to verify its readiness for a test. The
system then updates the table accordingly. You can also use this command to
fill in the table entries after manually entering an address for the instrument.

6. Source Preset Configurations

F6350 Configurations
The hardware specifications for the F6350 are the same as those for the F6150,
and they determine the number of sources possible at different VA ratings. The
constraints governing these, for non-enhanced amplifiers are:
1. There are 3 convertible and 3 current amplifiers, each capable of being
used as a single source of 150 VA of apparent power. They are labeled (left
to right in Figure 19 on page 32) as VA or IA, VB or IB, VC or IC and I1,
I2, I3
2. Any of the amplifiers can be split into 2 channels, each of which is a 75
VA source. When you do this, you get 12 sources which are labeled as
shown in Figure 20 on page 32 as VA or IA, VB or IB, VC or IC, VR or
IR, VS or IS, VT or IT and I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6.
3. The three adjacent current channels can be combined into a single 450 VA
current source. When 3V and 1 450 VA are chosen as a source
configuration, the three amplifiers on the right are all labeled “I1”. They
can be combined to provide much higher currents than any single
amplifier can provide.
4. The convertible sources can be configured as either voltage or current
sources. If they are configured as current sources, their current limits are
lower than what the pure current sources can produce, but they are more
accurate. They are referred to as the low current sources.
The preset configurations for the F6350 are convenient shortcuts to configure
multiple sources easily. The preset configurations supported in the Multi-amp
configurator would all be available on the F6150 and are listed in the table in
Table 1 on page 33. The values in that table are for non-enhanced ratings.
For instruments with enhanced rating amplifiers, the source combinations
form the same pattern, but at higher current and power levels. They are
detailed in Table 2 on page 35.

Any of the current sources can have their transient mode set to True, which
will increase the maximum current and maximum power available, but only
for a limited time.
The limitations for Instruments without Enhanced Rating (ER) amplifiers are:
• In all 3I Current Source configurations, the Current Range can go up
by 100% to 15, 30, or 60Amps, and the available power is 50% greater
from 150 VA to 225 VA. This mode is limited to ~1.5 seconds of high
power operation.
• In all 6I current configurations, involving split amplifier channels, the
Current Range can go up by 100%, but only Ranges of 15 and 30
Amps are available. The available power is 50% greater, from 75 VA
to 112.5 VA. This mode is also limited to ~1.5 seconds of high power
operation.
• When there are Low Current Sources in a configuration, they can
supply an increase in current by 50% (the .5 Range goes to .75 Amps
or 1.0 goes to 1.5 Amps). There is an increase in total power of 30%
(from 75 VA to 97.5 VA). This mode is limited to ~1.5 seconds.
• In the 12 current sources configuration for the F6350 (6 Low I, 6I),
choosing transient mode makes a choice of Transient Type available.
(This is the only use of the Transient Type DropDown.)
• A choice of Low Transient Type increases the current ranges in the
convertible sources from .5 and 1.0 to .75 and 1.5 (+50%), but
does not change the limits in the current sources
• A choice of High Transient Type increases the current ranges in
the current sources from 7.5 and 15 to 15 and 30 (+100%), but
does not change the limits in the convertible sources.
• A choice of Both for Transient Type implements the increases in
both sets of sources.

6. Source Preset Configurations

F6300 Configurations
The F6300 has 6 amplifier channels, all of which are single current sources.
They cannot be used as voltage sources and they cannot be split into 2 75 VA
sources. There are only 2 basic configurations offered, one of which (2I) has 2
groups of ganged sources that differ only in naming convention.

7. Injecting Low-Level Signals into
Configured Instruments

Once an instrument is configured to perform as an amplifier, you must inject

the proper voltage signals from a simulator, such as the RTDS system, to
produce the desired outputs. This is done by using the Universal Low-Level
Sources cable for each F63xx.
The ranges of signals to inject are described in the section on low-level
sources.
The cable used to inject the signals is described in “Universal Low-Level
Sources Cable” on page 43.

72A-3183-01 Rev. C 10/2015 41

F6 Multiple Amplifier Configurator User Guide

Low-Level Sources
The Low-Level Sources connector on any model of F6150 is used as an
output connector to provide signals to an F6300, when they are used
together. The low-level signals are generated by the CPU of the F6150,
adjusted for the calibration of the F6300, and delivered by the DB-15 cable
to the F6300.
When any F6300 or F6350 is used as a standalone amplifier, the
Low-Level Sources connector serves as an input to receive low-level input
signals that are to be amplified by the current amplifiers and the
convertible amplifiers.
The following table describes the parameter ranges of the Low-Level
Sources connector. The parameter values are approximate because each
channel would have its own calibration when the F6xxx was used as a test
instrument. The values below are the theoretical scale factors for an ideal
instrument.

* Where three currents are ganged together on the F6350, in the 3V 1(450VA) I
configuration, for the 15A (or 17.5 Enhanced) range, it is necessary to inject the
appropriate low-level signal into leads for Pin 3, in addition to Pins 9, 10, and 11.
For Transients in the 30 (or 35) Amp range of the same 3V 1(450VA) I configuration, it is
also necessary to inject a signal into the leads for Pin 3, as well as the expected Pins 9, 10,

8. Playing Back of Sampled Value Signals

There are several preliminary steps in the process of setting up for a

Sampled Values Test.
The first step is to have the Instrument configured to boot up in SV
Mode. This is accomplished through the settings on the web page for
the F6000 Instrument.
Figure 26 shows the configuration web page for an F6350 or F6350e. It
is addressed by pointing a web browser at the IP Address of the
instrument. The entry in the lower right shows how SV Playback is
chosen. If this configuration is saved, the F6350 will boot up in the SV
Playback mode the next time it is re-started.
There is a similar configuration web page for the F6300 and F6300e
Instruments.

Figure 26 The Configuration Web Page for an F6350

72A-3183-01 Rev. C 10/2015 47

F6 Multiple Amplifier Configurator User Guide

Other parameters need to be set up using the SV Playback

Configuration button on the left side of the screen.

Figure 27 SV Playback Configuration

The Playback Delay parameter specifies how much time, in

milliseconds, should elapse between the time a sample is generated
and when it is played back. The playback instrument must have GPS
Satellite timing to provide an accurate time reference. The system
generating the streams of Sampled Values may be an RTDS or other
simulator system, or it could be a Doble F6150sv Test Set. These
generating systems must also have accurate time references, and in
the case of the F6150, it could share the same GPS Antenna Signal
with the F63xx Instruments by using a ribbon cable with multiple DB-15
connectors.
The Playback Delay parameter should be a number from 8 to 1000.
The Lost Packet Tolerance is a number from 1 to 5 which describes the
number of SV Packets in sequence that can be missing or unreadable
before the system will raise an error.
The decision to play back SV streams is indicated by placing a
checkmark in the SV Playback Column of the appropriate row of the
Instruments Table. The Select Source check box for this row must also
be checked, and the Instrument must be one that has been configured
to boot up in the SV playback Mode. If this is not the case, an error will
be raised when the Instruments are Enabled.

48 72A-3183-01 Rev. C 10/2015

8. Playing Back of Sampled Value Signals

The details of the actual SV streams are specified by the SV Playback

Stream interface, which is opened by clicking the ellipsis to the right of
the SV Playback check box. The following dialog appears:

Figure 28 SV Playback Stream Interface

There are two possible choices in the Amplifier Input drop-down list at
the top of the window. For a 60 Hz signal, 4800 packets per second will
be expected. Otherwise, for a 50 HZ signal, 4000 packets per second
will be expected. Note that each setting provides 80 packets of
Sampled Values during each cycle of a sinusoidal signal.
In the Stream Detail portion of the interface, at least one stream, and
up to three streams can be specified. Although these streams will be
generated by another application, the Configurator needs to tell the
F60XX Instrument some details of what to play back. These details
include the MAC Address and the Sample Value ID.
The MAC Address consists of six octets of eight bits each, which are
specified in hexadecimal as shown above. The last two octets are
editable in this application.
The Sample Value ID is an eight character ID, which must be unique
for each stream. Each stream will have 4 Voltages and 4 Currents.
These can be assigned to the outputs of the configured F63XXs, as
described in the next section.

F6 Multiple Amplifier Configurator User Guide

The I Pri and I Sec columns are available to provide for situations
where the Primary current values are large (which is often the case),
and a transformer is used to bring secondary values down to ranges
that are normally associated with an F6 family Test Set. The V Pri and
V Sec columns work similarly for Voltage
The Voltages and Currents in the SV streams are assigned to the
outputs of the configured F63XX Instruments, as depicted in the
Source Details window. Figure 29 shows a 2V 4I configuration to be
played back on an F6350e.

Figure 29

The Source Names in the Src column follow the same source naming
conventions that are used in the Analog playback mode. On the
F6350s, the Voltages are named with subscripts that run VA, VB, VC,
VR, VS, and VT. The Currents are given names with subscripts that run
I1, I2, I3, I4, I5, and I6. The Range choices will be appropriate for the
instrument chosen.
The SV ID must be one of the Sample Value IDs specified in the SV
Playback Stream interface, which was described previously. The
naming conventions there follow the A, B, C, N convention. This means
that VA, VB, VC, and VN will be the SV Voltage names and IA, IB, IC,
and IN will be the SV Current names in each of the streams defined.

8. Playing Back of Sampled Value Signals

Recall that the naming convention for Sources on an F6300 and

F6300e are different from those of the F6350 family. The example
below shows a 12I configuration to be played back on an F6300e. Note
that it is necessary to utilize the Current Sources for all 4 streams to
have sufficient unique SV Streams for the 12 Current Source F6300e.

Figure 30

When all the SV Sources to be created and played back are defined,
the generator of the SV Streams can be turned on and the FMAC
Program that is setup to configure them can be Enabled to play them
back.
It is best to perform the operations in that order so that there are no
errors raised by the FMAC looking for SV signals that aren’t there yet.
The image below shows a State Simulation set up in Protection Suite,
where an F6150sv will generate a 2V 4I sequence of Sampled Values
Streams. Note that the transition from State 1 to State 2 is set to be
triggered by an LN1 Logic Input. This technique permits the operator to
trigger the move to later states when the configured F63XX
Instruments are ready for playback.

Figure 32 on page 53 shows a configuration set up in the FMAC,

designed to test the F6150sv generated 2V 4I sequence of Sampled
Values Streams. Once the transition from State 1 to State 2 is triggered
by an LN1 Logic Input, several values of input will be triggered to test
the ranges configured on the F6350e Instrument.
