The Creative Power of the Word

I Declare! Part 1

Pastor Tom Griffiths 3rd March 2013

• Over the next few weeks we’re going to be focussing on the

power of the spoken word.
- The creative power of the spoken word is the greatest
force in this universe.
- When you harness your words, you harness a power
greater than the splitting of the atom.

• We see this in a limited form in the simple way that words

spoken to a child can psychologically ruin him.
- We see it in discipline of psychoneuroimmunology.
“There is no word that passes the lips that the body doesn’t try in some way to
replicate in the physiology, psychology, immunology or sociology of the speaker.”
Article in Time Magazine

• But the scriptures reveal that the effect of the spoken word is
not limited to psychological effects.
- The spoken word is literally the creative force that
undergirds & powers the entire fabric of creation.

1. What Drives Your Life?

Ø Your tongue is in the driving seat of your life.

§ Do you like the view? *James 3:2-8

Ø To change the scenery, we must first change the driver!

§ Many forces may be propelling the boat forward, but
the rudder dictates its direction! (Not gifts /education)

Ø No matter how great the gifting, a man with an unbridled

tongue is useless to both God.
§ Takes your gifts in the wrong direction.
§ The root of most people’s problem is their tongue.

Ø To understand this we need to lay aside our modernistic,

rational mindset and exercise our faith.
§ We need to go back to where is all started… Genesis.

2. The Creative Power of God’s Words. *Genesis 1:1-4

Ø When God wanted to create a universe, He spoke it into being.

§ He didn’t create it our of stuff that already existed.
§ God wanted to bring something into being that until
that time, had no being.
- All there was was spirit, so He used a spiritual
tool to create a physical reality.
“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that
the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”
Hebrews 11:3

Ø Words are spiritual tools.

§ The spiritual realm has power of the natural realm.
*Like a train pulling carriages.

Ø When God said “Light Be” the physical reality had to submit
to the spiritual force applied to it & conform to the Word.
§ God’s spiritual tool for creating the universe was
words.
§ It was also his method for redeeming the world.
*John 1:1-18

Ø Not only that, but the Word of God is the power behind the
continued existence of the universe!
§ It creates. It redeems. It sustains. *Hebrews 1:1-3

3. The Creative Power of Man’s Words.

Ø Everything was created after it’s kind.

§ Animals were made after their kind.
- Resembling other animals, operating like other
animals, thinking like other animals.
§ Man wasn’t created after animal kind but after God
kind! *Genesis 1:26-28

Ø The animals were to resemble animals, operate like animals

and think like animals.

§ But man was to resemble God, operate like God and

think like God!
§ And the only way he knew to do anything was the
God kind of way.
- By speaking it into being!

Ø They were meant to be Kings and Rulers, just like God!

§ They were meant to exercise Dominion.
§ How does God exercise dominion? By His Words!

Ø God is a spiritual being who uses spiritual tools to bring

the physical realm under his dominion.
§ Man is also a spiritual being, was meant to operate in
exactly the same way!
§ Using spiritual tools – WORDS!!

Conclusion

Ø Next week we’re going to begin to see that Jesus used

words all the time to accomplish his works
“For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me
a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His
command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has
told Me, so I speak.” John 12:49-50

§ God created the world through Words.

§ God redeemed the world through The Word.
§ God sustains the world through The Word.

Ø As someone created in the image of God, don’t you think it’s

about time you harnessed that power.
§ Started using this rudder to take you to God’s
glorious destination for your life?
§ Because your future starts with your tongue…
