JD # 01 SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY ASSISY

 Assists in technical veterinary pathology procedures involved in the postmortem examinations of a variety of
exotic zoo animals including mammals, avian, reptiles, and amphibians.

 Creates and updates databases for tracking stored animal material, photographs, and histology slides. Searches
databases for researchers and provides animal material and pathology specimens to researchers.

 Responsible for the supervision, cleaning, disinfecting and maintenance of the facility, all instruments and
equipment (including laboratory safety and handling of bio-hazardous materials). Ensures that pathological
instruments are in good working order and available for use in the necropsy facility.

 Assists with clinical laboratory tests; trims fixed tissue and prepares them for sending out to histology lab; and,
files and stores other pathology specimen, histology slides and other animal materials generated by the
Department of Pathology in its study and research of animal diseases.

 Coordinates the collection and shipment of tissues and specimen to other laboratories

 Assists with the clinical pathology laboratory processes including running diagnostic tests, processing samples
and sending them out to appropriate reference laboratories, filing and storing samples and supply and services
procurement, and data management.

 Acts as liaison to the Smithsonian museums and investigators from other institutions for the disposition of
animal carcasses or parts thereof for scientific purposes and acts as the medical records keeper.
