Arrange these groups of numbers in ascending order (i.e. smallest to largest):
1. 3.52, 3.05, 3.25, 3.55
2. 30.6, 3.06, 3.6, 30.3
3. 17.81, 1.718, 1.871, 11.87
4. 26.92, 29.26, 29.62, 22.96, 22.69
5. 11.11, 11.109, 11.111, 11.011
Rounding decimals
• Rounding involves approximating a decimal number to fewer decimal places.
• Cut the number after the required decimal place. E.g. round to 2 decimal places.
• To determine whether you should round up or down, consider only the digit immediately to the right of the
specified place (the critical digit).
• If the critical digit is 4 or less, you round down.
• If the critical digit is 5 or more, you round up.
Round the following to 1 decimal place:
1. 15.913
2. 231.68
3. 9.3951
4. 34.71289
5. 29.999731
Round the following to 2 decimal places:
1. 3.7823
2. 5.9156
3. 0.93225
4. 9.3951
5. 29.999731
Addition and subtraction
• Align decimal points of each number under one another.
• Add 0s to “shorter” number(s) to prevent calculation errors.
• Calculate as if you are doing whole number addition or subtraction.
• Place the decimal point in the answer directly in line with the other decimal points in the question.
Exercise:
1. 7.12 + 8.5 + 13.032
2. 77.81 ‐ 6.3
3. 210 + 22.3 + 1.05
4. 412 ‐ 17.61
5. 1 ‐ 0.001
Multiplying and dividing by powers of 10
• Powers of 10 include 10, 100, 1000, 10000 … and so on.
• When multiplying by powers of 10, move the decimal point to the right the same number of places as there are
zeros in the multiplier.
• When dividing by powers of 10, move the decimal point to the left the same number of places as there are zeros
in the divisor.
Exercise:
1. 4.87 × 10
2. 14.304 × 100
3. 35.283 × 10
