FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH
Dear Parishioners,
I begin by wishing you and all who are dear to you,
a very blessed New Year. On looking back on 2017 and
some of the some of the items mentioned in our
Christmas News publication, there is much to be
thankful for even in the midst of tragedies. It is all part
of the ‘ups and downs of life’.
Today, as we say goodbye to 2017 and welcome a New Year, we do so in hope,
expectation and excitement … new challenges and new possibilities.
It is the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We thank God for our
own families and for the human family to which we all belong.
As we listen to today’s scripture readings, we hear of the faith and trust of
Abraham and even when things didn’t look as if they would work out as God promised.
The Hebrews reading repeats the story of Abraham’s faith.
The Gospel of Luke tells of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. The
characters in the scene are, Simeon, the Holy Spirit, Anna, Jesus , Mary and Joseph. “And
Mary pondered all these things in her heart”! We too need to reflect and ponder on
these wonderful acts of God we read about in scripture. God Is still very alive and active
in our lives today too. Let us thank God for our own families. Ask the Lord to help you
see the ‘GOOD’ in all of our families and not be obsessed by the ‘not-so-good’ in them!
Like wise in our christian family and all of humanity. Yes, there can be much to
moan about, but when you look carefully, there is much to rejoice about too.
Cardinal Vincent has a Pastoral Letter for us today. He speaks of the important of
his own family and especially his parents. He reminds us of New Year resolutions and
quotes st Paul’s letter to the Colossians: “You are God’s chosen reace, his saints, he loves
you and you should be clothed in sincere compassion, in kindness and humility,
gentleness and patience … and may thepeace of Christ reign in your hearts”.
MANY THANKS for your generosity over this Christmas period; your cards and
gifts are very much appreciated. Our gratitude to all who give of their time and energy
caring for others; feeding the hungry; visiting the housebound; the Catechetical
programmes; participation in all aspects of our Masses/ Liturgy; adult education;
looking after our church building and the many other ways you help to build up God’s
kingdom here in West Green. Keep up the good work!!
Happy New Year! Fr Joe
