● Child has a fever for almost a week and complaining of aches and pains
● Severe fatigue for a week
2. Fill out the chart below for each of the tests that you ordered for your baby. Feel free to add rows if you
ordered more than 3 tests.
Pathogen Suspected Tests Ordered for Diagnosis Results What Do The Results
Imply?
Borrelia Burgdorferi Lyme Disease Positive the results imply that our
baby has Lyme Disease

3. Based on the results of your tests, what diagnosis did you give to your baby? What difficulties did you have with
the diagnosis? What caused those difficulties?
Based on the results of the test we diagnosed our child with Lyme Disease. We did not have any difficulty with this
diagnosis because the symptoms that occurred in the baby were the same as the symptoms when we searched the
pathogen up online.

4. What is the treatment plan for your baby’s illness?

Our treatments plan for our baby’s illness is antibiotics and visits to the doctor.

a. Why are antibiotics used or not used in your treatment?

Antibiotics are used in treatment because there is not an approved vaccine for this virus. To treat Lyme
disease you take oral antibiotics like doxycycline and amoxicillin.
b. What’s the baby’s prognosis after treatment? If the disease is treated in the early stages of
development, people with the disease usually recover quickly.
The disease was treated in the early stages of development because the patient has only been facing the
symptoms for about almost a week.
c. What is the containment plan to keep your baby from spreading the illness? Include in your answer
information about the incubation period of the illness and how long the baby is contagious.
it is not contagious unless another person gets bit by a tick. The incubation period is typically 3-30 days.
5. What type of pathogen is causing the illness (Virus, Bacteria, Protist, Fungus)
a. Is there a vaccine for this illness?
There is no vaccine for the illness, but you can take antibiotics to fight the disease
b. At what age can your baby receive the vaccine?
There is not a FDA approved vaccine, therefore the baby can never take a vaccine.
c. Since they have the illness, do they even need a vaccine to prevent future illnesses from this same
pathogen? Explain why or why not.
Since this is a bacterial infection, the baby would not need a vaccine to prevent the illness in the future. This is
a bacterial infection, making a vaccine useless towards it. The way to treat this infection is using antibiotics.
Also the antibodies will recognize the pathogens and kill them off faster.

6. List 3 Correctly-cited resources from which you found the information about infectious disease in MLA format.
