The 1918 Influenza Pandemic

The 1918 Project - Unravelling the mystery of this century's greatest pandemic. The research team, under
the direction of Professor Kirsty Duncan, is hoping to unravel the secrets of the influenza virus that caused
the 1918 influenza pandemic which killed some 20-40 million people worldwide. The project involves the
exhumation of the bodies of six men, buried at Longyearbyen, Norway, where the soil is permanently
frozen (permafrost). Under these conditions, a molecular characterization of the virus may be
possible. The Svalbard Pages also maintain a page that discusses The 1918 Project.
