MR. IÑIGO D. GARINGALAO,

Executive Director,
Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Task Force [ICAST],
ILOILO CITY

SUBJECT: Validation of a public posting appearing as: “Second hand smoke kills children”.

Dear Mr. Garingalao,

Please find in the accompanying page, photos of a “no smoking” signage that says: “second hand
smoke kills children”. The posting also shows a confined newborn with various tube attachments
suggesting, the child is into some critical condition. The pictures were taken on December 30, 2017.
Unless already removed, the signage may still be seen posted along the fence (facing outside) of the
Molo Police Station.

Admittedly, you and I may view the world in some opposing manner. I am a smoker and you are not.
Regardless, even if I do not smoke and would not want smokers around me, I would still find the
message in that poster as disturbing, void of reason, logic and scientific proof. Therefore, but with due
respect, I find the context and the delivery of the said statement as utterly misleading, unless you
could clarify.

Just as your name and the name of the former mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog were cited in the poster, I
am addressing these questions to you for everyone’s enlightenment:

1) What is the basis of this statement: “second hand smoke (SHS) kills children?”
2) How many children have already been killed by how many whiffs of tobacco-smoke?
3) Was that baby in the picture a victim of SHS? In which hospital was the poor baby confined?
4) Can your office offer any existing documents or some medical/scientific journals that I can go
over for review, appreciation and validation?

May I kindly stress that my purpose is to ascertain the veracity of the aforesaid statement that I am
questioning. In view of lack of validation over what seems to be an unfounded claim, I believe this is
a matter of wider public interest [not only to the smokers]. The truth is at stake.

I seek enlightenment. Hence, may I respectfully look forward to receiving your reply and answers to
the above questions via my email address, soon. Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

ANTON ISRAEL
